Deriving the Born Rule from Discrete-Time Substrate Dynamics

Abstract

We derive the Born rule of quantum mechanics, P(ε_i) = |⟨ε_i|ψ⟩|², from the substrate framework — a candidate ontology in which time is discrete at the Planck scale, reality has two ontological frames (continuous Frame 1 and discrete Frame 2), and a complex scalar substrate field provides a universal environment for all quantum systems. We present two complementary derivations that converge on the same result.

Quantum Mechanics From the Substrate Framework - A Complete Textbook

J M Reed

The Substrate Framework starts from a hypothesis: there is a fundamental field that pervades all of space, all of time, every particle, every region. Call it the substrate. Everything else — particles, forces, even space and time as we experience them — emerges from this substrate. And we can derive the Born rule of Quantum Mechanics form this framework. The framework is based on eight postulates The eight postulates say: 1. There is a real, physical time at the deepest level of reality. Time flows. 2. Time and space are not symmetric. (This sounds technical but just means time is special — it has a direction, space does not have a preferred direction.) 3. Time emerges from the substrate dynamics. It is not a separate thing — it comes from how the substrate vibrates. 4. There exist tiny excitations of the substrate, called time quanta. They are everywhere, all the time, propagating at the speed of light. 5. Reality has two layers. There is the underlying quantum stuff (call it Frame 1), and there are the definite outcomes we actually observe (Frame 2). A filter connects them. 6. Matter is, in a sense, the absence of substrate. Where the substrate field drops to zero, mass appears. 7. The substrate has a particular shape — a Mexican-hat potential — that determines the physics of inflation, vacuum energy, and how the universe can be stable. 8. The substrate carries an extra electromagnetic-like force — a hidden gauge symmetry — with very specific properties.

Plain-English Guide to Quantum Mechanics, the Substrate Theory, and the Born Rule

J M Reed

The framework rests on eight foundational postulates — eight statements about how reality is structured. Each postulate makes a specific claim. Together, they constrain everything that can happen. In plain English, the eight postulates say: 1. Where the substrate field drops to zero, mass appears.7. The substrate has a particular shape — a Mexican-hat potential — that determines the physics of inflation, vacuum energy, and how the universe can be stable. 8. The substrate carries an extra electromagnetic-like force — a hidden gauge symmetry — with very specific properties. Time Quanta: The Tiny Observers Postulate 4 says that the substrate carries excitations called time quanta. These are like the photons of light, but they are excitations of the substrate field rather than the electromagnetic field. A few key facts about time quanta: • They are physically real, not a mathematical fiction • They exist everywhere, all the time • They propagate at the speed of light • They are unimaginably tiny — about one Planck length in size, which is something like a hundred-quintillionths of the diameter of a proton • They carry energy on the order of the Planck energy — extraordinarily large for one particle, but they are nearly massless when you average them. Where is the key insight: time quanta are constantly interacting with everything. Every atom, every electron, every macroscopic object is being constantly bombarded by time quanta from all directions. It is like rain. If you stand outside in a downpour, you are constantly being hit by water droplets. You feel them as pressure on your skin, as wetness in your hair. Each individual droplet is small, but the cumulative effect is large. Time quanta are like that, except they are everywhere, not just outside, and they are constant — there is no umbrella, no shelter from them. Every system in the universe is being continuously rained on by time quanta.

Substrate Quantum Gravity - A Complete Text Book

J M Reed

This textbook is about one specific attempt at a solution: the substrate framework. It is based on a simple but radical idea — that beneath the universe we observe, there is a hidden field. Not the gravitational field, not the electromagnetic field, but something more fundamental: a substrate that fills all of space and from which everything else — including space and time themselves — somehow emerges. Whether the substrate framework is ultimately right or wrong, the journey is worth taking. Quantum gravity is one of the great unsolved problems of our time. Understanding the contours of one specific attempt tells you something important about how physics actually works — what counts as progress, what counts as evidence, and what the universe might really be like beneath the surface we usually see. The Time-Quantum Picture Recall Postulate 1: time is quantized at the Planck scale. The universe ticks roughly 10⁴⁴ times per second (Plank length/c). Recall Postulate 4: there are two frames of reality — Frame 1 (continuous quantum-"The Substrate") and Frame 2 (observed events- "Our physical world"). At every time quantum, the universe samples Frame 1 and registers one outcome in Frame 2. Each tick is a sampling event. Like a strobe light photographing a fast-moving subject, each flash captures one snapshot. In substrate theory, there is no special measurement process. There is just the steady tick-tock of time quanta, each one sampling Frame 1 into Frame 2. What we call "a measurement" is what happens when this sampling reliably correlates with a macroscopic observable. Macroscopic objects involve enormous numbers of particles, each one being sampled at every time quantum. Over the duration of even a "fast" measurement (say, a millisecond), there are about 10⁴¹ samplings. The law of large numbers takes over: random fluctuations average out, and we see the Born-rule probabilities. There is no spooky "collapse." There is no observer-dependent reality. There is just continuous Frame 1 evolution, sampled into Frame 2 at the discrete pulses of time quanta. We have derived quantum mechanics — including its most famous and mysterious rule — from the substrate framework's basic postulates.

Derivation of the Born Rule for Real Amplitudes, in a Discrete Substrate with a Single, Exclusionary Dynamics

Julien DA COSTA

The Born rule, P(i) = |ψᵢ|²/Z, is posited as a postulate in the standard formulation of quantum mechanics, where ψ remains a primitive object and the exponent 2 a given fact with no internal justification. This work proposes a derivation of it, decomposing the structure of ψ, within a class of homogeneous discrete substrates defined by a single dynamical postulate of locality, P0. In particular, the amplitude becomes a propagation distance, an identifiable and measurable quantity, whose quadratic character is justified by the lattice geometry that the primitives impose. P0 is the axiom that openly fixes what is permitted and, through its uniqueness, determines what is excluded. It is this dual reading that forms the core of the entire construction that follows. The work operates in a finite-dimensional real vector space, for a homogeneous three-dimensional Euclidean lattice and an isolated object, without presupposing the linear Hilbert space structure (complex or real) that derivations such as Gleason's [1] require. Derivation of the Born Rule from Coherence-Cost Minimization in an Observer-Actualized Time Framework

AI Trinity Lab

A fully self-consistent derivation of the Born rule is presented using an information-theoretic quantity called coherence cost, defined over candidate future frames in an observer-actualized time model. By applying the Maximum Entropy Principle with a constraint determined by inter-frame coherence, the theory naturally yields without invoking von Neumann entropy. This provides a mathematically clean and conceptually transparent origin for quantum probabilities within a discrete frame-based temporal structure.

The Born Rule from Torsion Density Measurement

Dexter Gilbert

The Born rule — P(outcome i) = |⟨i|ψ⟩|2 — is the only postulate of quantum mechanicswithout a derivation from deeper principles within the standard framework. Existingderivations (Gleason 1957, Zurek 2003, Deutsch 1999) recover the rule from assumptionsabout Hilbert space structure, symmetry, or decision theory, but none derive it from amechanical substrate. This paper derives the Born rule within the Cohesion UnifiedField Theory from two results already established in the series: (1) torsion density —the energy density of the recursion field — is quadratic in the recursion field amplitude, following from E = pr applied to a linear recursion field; and (2) a macroscopicmeasuring device responds to torsion density (energy deposited in each pointer stateconfiguration), not to field amplitude directly, because its structural time rate is slowrelative to the system’s recursion frequency and it averages over rapid field oscillations. The squared modulus in the Born rule is therefore not a postulate: it is a consequenceof wave energy being quadratic in amplitude, applied to the moment of structural timesynchronisation between system and device. The derivation is complete at the level ofwave mechanics; the remaining open problem is an explicit derivation of the recursionfield wave equation from the Cohesion UFT field equations, rather than an appeal tothe universal quadratic property of wave energy. This paper closes the primary openproblem of the quantum measurement paper and the quantum field paper of this series.
