The Universal Present and the Emergence of the Past

Abstract

The nature of time and the origin of its apparent directionality remain among the most profound openquestions in physics. The prevailing view, grounded in thermodynamics and general relativity, holdsthat time possesses an intrinsic arrow pointing from a low-entropy past toward a higher-entropy future. In this paper, we propose an alternative framework in which the arrow of time is not fundamentalbut emerges from the process of past creation. We argue that a universal present exists—a single, shared “now” in which all objects reside—and that what we call the past is not a fixed record butis continuously created from the present. In this view, we do not move through time toward thefuture; we remain in the present while generating the past. We propose that wavefunction collapsevia environmental decoherence is the physical mechanism by which the present generates the past, suggesting a natural reinterpretation of the boundary between quantum mechanics and generalrelativity: quantum mechanics describes the present realm of uncollapsed superpositions, while generalrelativity describes the classical past realm that emerges from it. A key consequence of this frameworkis that observers at different gravitational potentials, running on different proper clocks as describedby general relativity, will observe a measurable, accumulating drift in the apparent timing of the samepast event. We propose that precision timing observations of pulsars offer a viable experimental testof this prediction. If confirmed, this would represent a fundamental shift in our understanding of thenature of time. We present this as a testable phenomenological framework rather than a completefundamental theory.

Emergence of Classical Time: Gravitational Temporal Decoherence and the Uniqueness of the Past

sergio leonardo Pradal

We propose a conservative theoretical framework addressing the emergence of classical time and the uniqueness of the past within quantum mechanics, without modifying its fundamental postulates or introducing objective collapse mechanisms. The central observation is that quantum superpositions of mass–energy distributions necessarily imply superpositions of gravitational potentials, and therefore superpositions of proper times. By treating time as an effective quantum degree of freedom and extending the system Hilbert space accordingly, we show that matter–time entanglement leads to an intrinsic dispersion of proper time. Gravitational fluctuations and irreversible memory formation dynamically suppress this dispersion, giving rise to an effective closure of temporal histories. The resulting dynamics admits stable fixed points corresponding to classical time and a unique past, while remaining fully compatible with global unitarity. We analyze the stability of this closure, its relation to decoherence and quantum Darwinism, and its implications for cosmology, including the interpretation of the Big Bang as a temporal closure process rather than a fundamental beginning of time. The framework clarifies the role of gravity in the quantum–classical transition and delineates the physical conditions under which a unique history can emerge.

The Paradox of Time: Quantum Gravity, Irreversible Inscription, and the Generative Origin of the Observer's Vantage Point

Phillip Brian Garner

Abstract This paper proposes that time is not a fundamental dimension of reality but an emergent property generated through a specific causal chain originating in a quantum gravitational mechanism not yet fully characterized by existing physics. There is no universal t = 0 in an absolute sense. There is only a threshold at which the quantum gravitational mechanism begins to generate motion, and time becomes applicable within a localized system only after that threshold is crossed. The central chain of inference is as follows: the quantum gravitational mechanism generates motion; motion generates new distinguishable information states; time is the ordered accumulation of those information states; and because information cannot be destroyed in the ontological sense proposed by this framework, the temporal sequence is irreversible by structural necessity rather than by thermodynamic probability. This four-step chain is not merely a restatement of existing physics in new language. It provides a mechanistic basis for the arrow of time, a physical account of wave function collapse, a structural explanation for the ontological threshold at quantum measurement, a reframing of the QM/GR incompatibility, a structural consequence for time travel impossibility within the framework’s own ontology, a predicted structural basis for the Hubble tension, an ontological resolution of quantum information scrambling — identifying apparent scrambling not as a property of the information itself but as an artifact of the outside-in observational position encountering the statistical surface of an internally ordered generative record that remains perfectly traceable from the inside-out perspective — and a precise reframing of the photon proper time paradox, identifying the τ = 0 result not as experiential simultaneity but as the expected mathematical signature of a massless particle operating at the c boundary condition of the emergent temporal domain where derived temporal measures are structurally inapplicable — each as a consequence of the same single ontological principle rather than as separately introduced claims. The fact that a single ontological principle generates resolutions to problems that physics has treated as unrelated for decades is not coincidental. It is the kind of convergent explanatory structure that has historically accompanied correct foundational claims — and the experimental program described here is designed to determine whether this framework earns that status. The ontology advanced here is referred to as Generative Inscription: the view that ordered time is the downstream accumulation of irreversibly inscribed state distinctions generated by motion from an upstream quantum-gravitational source. This framework advances toward operational unity by introducing a time-generation scalar field χ encoding the local density of irreversible information state generation per unit of action, a coupling constant κmotion defining the relationship between kinetic energy flux and information state generation rate, a phase transition model for the ontological threshold, a formal discriminator (ℛtot) bounding apparent thermodynamic time reversal against an absolute ontological record burden, candidate scaling laws for experimental signatures in fusion plasma diagnostics, a modified Friedmann equation incorporating geometric temporal asymmetry, and a defined set of minimal admissibility conditions formalizing the quantum gravitational mechanism as a constrained generator class rather than an unspecified placeholder. The primary coordinate is shifted from standard time t to Action S, with t emerging as a derived parameter, so that the mathematical structure reflects the ontological hierarchy this proposed framework claims. The framework employs an action-parameterized tangent vector rather than the standard four-velocity, separates coupling constants by operational scale, and adopts the Maupertuis formulation of action as the primary coordinate from which time derives. The framework is explicitly differentiated from related prior work by Wiltshire, Barbour, Vaccaro, and Brukner. Two cosmological predictions follow structurally from the core ontology: χ field convergence nodes at cosmic web filament intersections produce qualitatively distinct temporal environments, and gravitational wave events constitute propagating χ field disturbances with testable quantum measurement correlatives. Recent experimental observation of superluminal optical vortex motion provides an empirical glimpse of the distinction this framework draws between the generating mechanism’s operational level and the emergent temporal domain c governs. The experimental program described in Section 6 is not separate from the theory. It is the proposed inside-out crucible by which the framework would be falsified or strengthened through sustained nuclear fusion plasma diagnostics operating at stellar-interior conditions as should become available as fusion reactor technologies reach operational status within the next 10 to 20 years. Quantum Gravity If Non-Locality Is Fundamental

Stuart Alan Kauffman

I take non-locality to be the Michelson–Morley experiment of the early 21st century, assume its universal validity, and try to derive its consequences. Spacetime, with its locality, cannot be fundamental, but must somehow be emergent from entangled coherent quantum variables and their behaviors. There are, then, two immediate consequences: (i). if we start with non-locality, we need not explain non-locality. We must instead explain an emergence of locality and spacetime. (ii). There can be no emergence of spacetime without matter. These propositions flatly contradict General Relativity, which is foundationally local, can be formulated without matter, and in which there is no “emergence” of spacetime. If these be true, then quantum gravity cannot be a minor alteration of General Relativity but must demand its deep reformulation. This will almost inevitably lead to: matter not only curves spacetime, but “creates” spacetime. We will see independent grounds for the assertion that matter both curves and creates spacetime that may invite a new union of quantum gravity and General Relativity. This quantum creation of spacetime consists of: (i) fully non-local entangled coherent quantum variables. (ii) The onset of locality via decoherence. (iii) A metric in Hilbert space among entangled quantum variables by the sub-additive von Neumann entropy between pairs of variables. (iv) Mapping from metric distances in Hilbert space to metric distances in classical spacetime by episodic actualization events. (v) Discrete spacetime is the relations among these discrete actualization events. (vi) “Now” is the shared moment of actualization of one among the entangled variables when the amplitudes of the remaining entangled variables change instantaneously. (vii) The discrete, successive, episodic, irreversible actualization events constitute a quantum arrow of time. (viii) The arrow of time history of these events is recorded in the very structure of the spacetime constructed. (ix) Actual Time is a succession of two or more actual events. The theory inevitably yields a UV cutoff of a new type. The cutoff is a phase transition between continuous spacetime before the transition and discontinuous spacetime beyond the phase transition. This quantum creation of spacetime modifies General Relativity and may account for Dark Energy, Dark Matter, and the possible elimination of the singularities of General Relativity. Relations to Causal Set Theory, faithful Lorentzian manifolds, and past and future light cones joined at “Actual Now” are discussed. Possible observational and experimental tests based on: (i). the existence of Sub- Planckian photons, (ii). knee and ankle discontinuities in the high-energy gamma ray spectrum, and (iii). possible experiments to detect a creation of spacetime in the Casimir system are discussed. A quantum actualization enhancement of repulsive Casimir effect would be anti-gravitational and of possible practical use. The ideas and concepts discussed here are not yet a theory, but at most the start of a framework that may be useful.

Gravitational Time, Decoherence, and the Quantum-Classical Transition

sergio leonardo Pradal

We present a unified and minimal theoretical framework addressing the quantum-classical transition, the measurement problem, and the emergence of the arrow of time, grounded in gravitational physics. Building on the insight that quantum superpositions of mass distributions necessarily imply superpositions of gravitational potentials, we show that such states are unavoidably associated with superpositions of proper times due to gravitational time dilation. By extending the system Hilbert space to include a temporal degree of freedom, we demonstrate that matter-time entanglement leads naturally to effective decoherence when the time degree of freedom is traced out. The resulting reduced dynamics takes the form of a Lindblad master equation derived from an underlying unitary evolution. This framework reproduces the correct microscopic and macroscopic limits, clarifies the relation to Diósi-Penrose-type models, and provides a coherent account of classicality and temporal irreversibility without postulating observers, environmental decoherence as fundamental, or objective wavefunction collapse.

The Emergence of Thermodynamic Time from Quantum Entanglement

Revista, Zen, PHYSICS, 10

The concept of time presents a profound challenge at the intersection of quantum mechanics and thermodynamics. While fundamental microscopic laws are largely time-symmetric, macroscopic phenomena universally exhibit a distinct thermodynamic arrow of time, characterized by increasing entropy. This paper explores the hypothesis that quantum entanglement plays a crucial role in the emergence of this thermodynamic arrow. We review how the entanglement between a quantum system and its environment leads to decoherence, effectively driving the system towards a state of higher entropy and classical-like behavior. By analyzing concepts such as von Neumann entropy, entanglement entropy, and the Page-Wootters mechanism, we propose a theoretical framework where the degradation and spreading of entanglement act as the underlying mechanism for the perceived unidirectional flow of time. This approach offers a potential resolution to the "problem of time" in quantum gravity and provides a unified perspective on the genesis of irreversibility from the inherently reversible laws of quantum mechanics. We discuss the implications of this entanglement-driven temporal emergence for our understanding of the universe's initial low-entropy state and the fundamental nature of reality.
