Abstract

This paper presents a compact, single-ended high-temperature superconducting (HTS) helium-focused ion beam (He-FIB) Josephson junction (JJ) mixer. The planar circuit is fabricated from a thin film layer of YBa2Cu3O7-xdeposited on a 10 mm × 10 mm Lanthanum Strontium Aluminium Tantalate (LSAT) substrate. A comprehensive six-step microstrip design methodology is outlined, detailing the JJ's physical geometries, high frequency and DC grounding, impedance matching, and filtering networks. The complete microstrip topology is designed to achieve an approximate radio frequency (RF) input passband between 9.9 GHz to 10.6 GHz with high out-of-band isolation, a single local oscillator (LO) resonance at 11.54 GHz and an intermediate frequency (IF) lowpass cut-off at 2.3 GHz. The proposed RF impedance matching network is uniquely designed to mitigate the significant performance limitation associated with normal resistances ($\rm{R}_\rm{n}$) scatter observed in HTS JJs. By implementing the proposed design methodology, a stable percentage bandwidth and$\rm{S}_{11}$$\leq$-10 dB is maintained between${\mathit{R}}_\rm{n} =$5$\Omega$to 10$\Omega$, which coincides with the fabrication variance for He-FIB JJs. The HTS mixer is manufactured and its DC and high frequency behaviours are characterised at 6 K, 10 K, 20 K, 30 K, and 40 K. The measured${\mathit{R}}_\rm{n}$is 9.77$\Omega$, which significantly deviated from the predicted value of 5$\Omega$, emphasising the importance of the adaptability and versatility of the implemented impedance matching network. Exposed to the lowest measured temperature, the HTS mixer exhibited a maximum conversion gain of -4.93 dB which demonstrates the potential capabilities in He-FIB induced barrier JJs on LSAT substrates as frequency mixers.

A wideband terahertz high- T c superconducting Josephson-junction mixer: electromagnetic design, analysis and characterization

Xiang Gao, Ting Zhang, Jia Du +3 more

Abstract This paper presents a wideband terahertz (THz) mixer based on a thin-film antenna-coupled high-temperature superconducting (HTS) YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−x (YBCO) step-edge Josephson junction. The HTS mixer enables the flexible harmonic mixing operation at multiple THz bands with the same microwave local oscillator (LO) source, and features very wide intermediate-frequency or instantaneous bandwidth. In order to optimize the frequency down-conversion performance of the mixer, systematic electromagnetic design and analysis have been carried out to improve the power coupling of THz radiation as well as wideband transmission of microwave signals. Experimental characterization of a fabricated device prototype has demonstrated that the mixer exhibits good performance at both the 200 GHz and 600 GHz bands. Detailed measurement results including the DC characteristics, LO pumping requirement, frequency response, mixing linearity and conversion gain are presented in this paper.

Optimization of a 115 GHz waveguide mixer based on an HTS Josephson junction

Oliver Harnack, Marian Darula, Jens Scherbel +4 more

A waveguide mixer based on a Josephson junction made from a high-temperature superconductor (HTS) has been analysed at frequencies of 90 GHz and 115 GHz. The mixer consisted of a single-grain-boundary bicrystal junction which was integrated with a bow-tie antenna and a microstrip filter structure fabricated on an MgO substrate. Two different designs of mixer block were tested. Using the first design the best noise performance was measured at a local oscillator (LO) frequency of about 90 GHz. At the projected LO frequency of 115 GHz significant deterioration of performance was observed. A computer simulation of the mixer chip and substrate channel structure was performed using the 3D simulation program HFSS. Sufficient RF signal rejection by the filter structure was confirmed at 90 GHz. After a simulation cycle at 115 GHz the substrate channel in the mixer block was modified. Using this second design we measured a double-sideband mixer noise temperature of 1090 K at 10 K operating temperature which is the best performance of an HTS Josephson mixer to date obtained at this frequency and temperature.

Optimised conversion efficiency of a HTS MMIC Josephson down-converter

Jia Du, D D Bai, Ting Zhang +3 more

© 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd. A high-Tc superconducting (HTS) monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) Josephson down-converter that approaches zero conversion loss is reported. The all-HTS YBa2Cu3O7-x thin-film circuit consists of a step-edge Josephson junction mixer, a 10-12 GHz bandpass filter for the RF input, a lowpass filter for the IF output and a resonant strip line for local oscillator isolation; all are integrated on a single 10 mm × 20 mm MgO substrate. The DC characteristics of the junction and its mixing properties have been experimentally studied and compared to the results of (a) a single Josephson mixer without the on-chip HTS filters, and (b) our previously reported MMIC down-converter which had very different junction characteristics. The Josephson junction parameters are analysed to give insight into their effect on the mixer performance.

We report the experimental evaluation of a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) Josephson mixer. The mixer is fabricated from a HTS step-edge junction on MgO substrate. The mixer device operates as a lower side-band down-converter from a radio frequency between 6 and 10 GHz to a 1-2 GHz intermediate frequency under the action of a local oscillator. The experimental results of the current-voltage characteristics, optimal bias conditions, dynamic range, linearity, conversion gain, and the temperature dependence of the mixer are presented.

100 GHz wide-band HTS mixer antenna with phase control

Kenji Suzuki, M. Ban, Seiichi Tokunaga +3 more

Here we report on the millimeter-wave performance of high-Tc superconducting (HTS) Josephson junctions on MgO substrates, fabricated using a focused Ga ion beam (FIB) technique. The 6 junctions spaced 1.5 /spl mu/m apart from each other occupied 7.5 /spl mu/m. The 6 junctions can modulate even the 1000 GHz electromagnetic wave with nearly equal phase. We applied the YBCO series junction to a millimeter wave mixer with a log-periodic antenna. The HTS junction mixer and the log-periodic antenna are expected to have a function of flat frequency response up to THF. First, we measure wide frequency band responsibility for mixing function below 100 GHz. Next, we observe the HTS mixer-antenna performance as fundamental and harmonic mixers in the wide frequency range up to 100 GHz. Finally, the IF output phases can be changed within 1 dB of IF output power differences.

HTS step-edge Josephson junction terahertz harmonic mixer

Jia Du, Andrew R. Weily, Xiang Gao +3 more

A high-temperature superconducting (HTS) terahertz (THz) frequency down-converter or mixer based on a thin-film ring-slot antenna coupled YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7– x (YBCO)/MgO step-edge Josephson junction is reported. The frequency down-conversion was achieved using higher order harmonics of an applied lower frequency (19–40 GHz) local oscillator signal in the Josephson junction mixing with a THz signal of over 600 GHz, producing a 1–3 GHz intermediate frequency signal. Up to 31st order of harmonic mixing was obtained and the mixer operated stably at temperatures up to 77 K. The design details of the antenna, HTS Josephson junction mixer, the matching and isolation circuits, and the DC and RF performance evaluation are described in this paper.
