Reconstruction of Photon Statistics in the Presence of Photodetection Noise

Abstract

An original approach has been developed to extract information on the photon distribution function recorded by the photocount method in the presence of interference. Photon statistics reconstruction has been studied in the presence of two types of interference: dark counts and background radiation. The calculation has been performed using a characteristic function. Correctly reconstructing photon statistics and appropriate experimental conditions have been discussed. The obtained results can be used in measuring photon statistics of low-photon radiation sources and non-classical light fields.

Quantum state inference from photocount statistics: one-probe reconstruction and reconstruction checking the presence or absence of photons

We demonstrate the possibility of reconstructing the density matrix of a single-mode signal state of a radiation field by measuring the photocount statistics in a simple two-detector measurement scheme. We show that the reconstruction can be done by measuring either the complete photocount distribution for identical probe states or the probability of zero counts on both detectors for different probe states.

Inverse Quantum Problem of Multidimensional Photocount Statistics

A. S. Chirkin

The multidimensional photon statistics has been determined for the first time from the measurement of the statistics of electrons generated by the detected radiation. The two-dimensional case is described in detail. The used method is based on the application of the characteristic function, which makes it possible to obtain the relation between the two-dimensional photon distribution function and the two-dimensional photocount distribution function. The domain of application of the obtained results are few-photon and nonclassical light fields.

Statistical Uncertainty in Quantum Optical Photodetection Measurements

Konrad Banaszek

We present a complete statistical analysis of quantum optical measurement schemes based on photodetection. Statistical distributions of quantum observables determined from a finite number of experimental runs are characterized with the help of the generating function, which we derive using the exact statistical description of raw experimental outcomes. We use the developed formalism to point out that the statistical uncertainty results in substantial limitations of the determined information on the quantum state: though a family of observables characterizing the quantum state can be safely evaluated from experimental data, its further use to obtain the expectation value of some operators generates exploding statistical errors. These issues are discussed using the example of phase--insensitive measurements of a single light mode. We study reconstruction of the photon number distribution from photon counting and random phase homodyne detection. We show that utilization of the reconstruct...

Recursive method for solving the inverse problem of photocount statistics

P. P. Gostev, С.А. Магницкий, A. S. Chirkin

An analytical recursive method for solving the inverse problem of photocount statistics, that is, for reconstructing the photon-number distribution from the photocount distribution, is proposed for few-photon light. It is shown that if the inverse problem is represented as a system of linear equations, then for finite distributions one can obtain a recurrence formula relating the photocount distribution and the photon-number distribution without restrictions on the quantum efficiency of photodetection.
