Abstract

In this paper, we present melody generation method using quantum computing. The topic of music generation has been of interest in computer science since the early days of computing. With the advent of quantum computing, this paper explores the potential of using a quantum computer for music generation, particularly for generating melodies. In this research, we propose a method of designing quantum circuits with genetic algorithms for melody generation. Our proposed method allows for the generation of subsequent musical notes for arbitrary input notes and the production of melodies of varying lengths based on the transition distribution between melodies in the training data.We compared the accuracy of a quantum computer in predicting the subsequent note based on the training data with that of a classical computer. Our results demonstrate the potential of quantum computing for melody generation * .

QUANTUM CIRCUIT DESIGN BY MEANS OF GENETIC PROGRAMMING ê

Andrei Bãutu, Elena Bãutu

Research in quantum technology has shown that quantum computers can provide dramatic advantages over classical computers for some problems. The efficiency of quantum computing is considered to become so significant that the study of quantum algorithms has attracted widespread interest. Development of quantum algorithms and circuits is difficult for a human researcher, so automatic induction of computer programs by means of genetic programming, which uses almost no auxiliary information on the search space, proved to be useful in generating new quantum algorithms. This approach takes advantage of the intrinsic parallelism of the genetic algorithm and quantum computing parallelism. The paper begins with a brief review on some basic concepts in genetic algorithms and quantum computation. Next, it describes an application of genetic programming for evolving quantum computing circuits.

Based on Genetic Algorithm for Quantum Circuit Optimization

Jincheng Zhang

This paper explores the application of genetic algorithms (GAs) to optimize quantum circuits. The core claim is that GA can effectively improve the efficiency and accuracy of quantum computation by strategically modifying the topology and control parameters of quantum circuits. The proposed mechanism treats a quantum circuit as a genetic individual, leveraging the principles of genetic algorithms – including crossover, mutation, and selection – to iteratively enhance circuit performance. This approach represents a novel method for quantum circuit optimization, offering a potentially robust and adaptable solution compared to traditional optimization techniques. We present a framework for implementing this approach, focusing on the algorithmic steps and considerations for successful application. The exploration will cover the challenges and potential benefits of integrating evolutionary algorithms with the unique characteristics of quantum computation. ---

Music Composition Using Quantum Annealing

Arya, Ashish, Ludmila Botelho, Fabiola Cañete +2 more

With the emergence of quantum computers, a new field of algorithmic music composition has been initiated. The vast majority of previous work focuses on music generation using gate-based quantum computers. An alternative model of computation is adiabatic quantum computing (AQC), and a heuristic algorithm known as quantum annealing running in the framework of AQC is a promising method for solving optimization problems. In this chapter, we lay the groundwork of music composition using quantum annealing. We approach the process of music composition as an optimization problem. We describe the fundamental methodologies needed for generating different aspects of music including melody, rhythm, and harmony. The discussed techniques are illustrated through examples to ease the understanding. The music pieces generated using D-Wave quantum annealers are among the first examples of their kind and presented within the scope of the chapter. The text is an unedited pre-publication version of a chapter which will appear in the book "Quantum Computer Music", Miranda, E. R. (Editor).

Incorporating Quantum Advantage in Quantum Circuit Generation through Genetic Programming

Stein, Christoph, Michael Färber

Designing efficient quantum circuits that leverage quantum advantage compared to classical computing has become increasingly critical. Genetic algorithms have shown potential in generating such circuits through artificial evolution. However, integrating quantum advantage into the fitness function of these algorithms remains unexplored. In this paper, we aim to enhance the efficiency of quantum circuit design by proposing two novel approaches for incorporating quantum advantage metrics into the fitness function of genetic algorithms.1 We evaluate our approaches based on the Bernstein-Vazirani Problem and the Unstructured Database Search Problem as test cases. The results demonstrate that our approaches not only improve the convergence speed of the genetic algorithm but also produce circuits comparable to expert-designed solutions. Our findings suggest that automated quantum circuit design using genetic algorithms that incorporate a measure of quantum advantage is a promising approach to accelerating the development of quantum algorithms.

The advent of quantum computer music: mapping the field

Eduardo Reck Miranda

Quantum computing technology is developing at a fast pace. The impact of quantum computing on the music industry is inevitable. This paper maps the emerging field of quantum computer music. Quantum computer music investigates, and develops applications and methods to process music using quantum computing technology. The paper begins by contextualising the field. Then, it discusses significant examples of various approaches developed to date to leverage quantum computing to learn, process and generate music. The methods discussed range from rendering music using data from physical quantum mechanical systems and quantum mechanical simulations to computational quantum algorithms to generate music, including quantum AI. The ambition to develop techniques to encode audio quantumly for making sound synthesisers and audio signal processing systems is also discussed.
