Abstract

We presented the results of a numerical analysis of frequency entanglement in the context of generating multidimensional polarization-entangled states of biphotons, proposed by the authors earlier. The results presented will be useful for researchers in the field of quantum optics to understand the internal structure of entanglement of hybrid two-photon states of light and the possibility of controlling these states.

Method for the Direct Generation of Multidimensional Biphoton States with Polarization–Frequency Quantum Entanglement

Maksim A. Smirnov, A. M. Smirnova, O. A. Ermishev +2 more

An approach has been proposed to directly generate a multidimensional biphoton state that combines the polarization and frequency quantum entanglement of visible and infrared modes in a microstructured fiber. The possibility of controlling polarization states and equalizing the amplitudes of all generated spectral modes without a significant decrease in the generation rate has been shown. The prospects for the use of multidimensional biphoton states in optical quantum processing and quantum communications have been discussed.

Entangling entanglement: coupling frequency and polarization of biphotons on demand

Arash Riazi, Eric Y. Zhu, Dan Xu +1 more

Abstract Quantum information is often carried in the frequency and polarization degrees of freedom (DoFs) in single photons and entangled photons. We demonstrate an approach to couple and decouple the frequency and polarization DoFs of broadband biphotons. Our approach is based on a nonlinear interferometer consisting of a linear dispersive medium and a polarization controller in between the two biphoton sources (nonlinear media). When the two DoFs are decoupled, maximally polarization-entangled biphotons are observed in the polarization DoF, while interference fringes are observed in the spectrum of the biphotons. When the two DoFs are coupled, by adjusting the polarization controller, interference fringes disappear from the spectrum and instead appear in the degree of polarization entanglement, varying between 0 and 1, depending on the signal and idler frequencies. Our approach offers a convenient means of tuning the polarization entanglement and can be employed for arbitrary biphoton polarization state generation.

Intermodal-Vectorial Four-Wave Mixing in Few-Mode Fibers for Generation of Photon Pairs with Spatial-Polarization-Frequency Hybrid Entanglement

Andrzej Gawlik, Marta Bernaś, Kinga Żołnacz +1 more

Four-wave mixing (FWM) in optical fibers is a nonlinear optical process which can be used to generate photon pairs with hybrid entanglement in multiple degrees of freedom (DOFs), including frequency, polarization, spatial mode, or angular momentum [1]. Until now, the realizations of entanglements in the DOFs: energy-time, frequency, polarization, spatial-frequency, and polarization-frequency [1] have been proposed using specific FWM processes in different optical fibers.

Framework for quantum modeling of fiber-optical networks: PART II

John M. Myers

We formulate quantum optics to include frequency dependence in the modeling of optical networks. Entangled light pulses available for quantum cryptography are entangled not only in polarization but also, whether one wants it or not, in frequency. We model effects of the frequency spectrum of faint polarization-entangled light pulses on detection statistics. For instance, we show how polarization entanglement combines with frequency entanglement in the variation of detection statistics with pulse energy. Attention is paid not only to single-photon light states but also to multi-photon states. These are needed (1) to analyze the dependence of statistics on energy and (2) to help in calibrating fiber couplers, lasers and other devices, even when their desired use is for the generation of single-photon light.
