Extension of the Nakajima-Zwanzig approach to multitime correlation functions of open systems

Anton Ivanov, Heinz‐Peter Breuer

We extend the Nakajima-Zwanzig projection operator technique to the determination of multitime correlation functions of open quantum systems. The correlation functions are expressed in terms of certain multitime homogeneous and inhomogeneous memory kernels for which suitable equations of motion are derived. We show that under the condition of finite memory times, these equations can be used to determine the memory kernels by employing an exact stochastic unraveling of the full system-environment dynamics. The approach thus allows us to combine exact stochastic methods, feasible for short times, with long-time master equation simulations. The applicability of the method is demonstrated by numerical simulations of two-dimensional spectra for a donor-acceptor model, and by comparison of the results with those obtained from the reduced hierarchy equations of motion. We further show that the formalism is also applicable to the time evolution of a periodically driven two-level system initially in equilibrium with its environment.

Factorization rule for multitime correlations in non-Markovian open quantum systems

Thomas K. Bracht, Moritz Cygorek

Experiments performed on quantum systems often measure multitime correlation functions. When quantum systems are weakly coupled to their environment, the time evolution of such correlation functions can be reduced to that of the reduced density matrix by the quantum regression theorem (QRT). While no QRT is available for general non-Markovian open quantum systems, we show that for time-independent Hamiltonians and finite memory times $τ_c$, an exact factorization rule exists that relates higher-order multitime correlations to products of lower-order correlations. Consequently, all information needed to reconstruct $n$-time correlations is contained in a temporal volume of $\mathcal{O}(τ_c^n)$. On the example of quantum dots coupled to phonons, we demonstrate that this factorization makes numerical calculations of multitime correlations extremely efficient and even enables semianalytical solutions in systems where the standard QRT breaks down.

Analytical determination of multi-time correlation functions in quantum chaotic systems

Yoana R. Chorbadzhiyska, Peter A. Ivanov, Charlie Nation

The time-dependence of multipoint observable correlation functions are essential quantities in analysis and simulation of quantum dynamics. Open quantum systems approaches utilize two-point correlations to describe the influence of an environment on a system of interest, and in studies of chaotic quantum system, the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) is used to probe chaoticity of dynamics. In this work we analytically derive the time dependence of multipoint observable correlation functions in quantum systems from a random matrix theoretic approach, with the highest-order function of interest being the OTOC. We find in each case that dynamical contributions are related to a simple function, related to the Fourier transform of coarse-grained wave functions. We compare the predicted dynamics to exact numerical experiments in a spin chain for various physical observables. We comment on implications toward the emergence of Markovianity and quantum regression in closed quantum systems, as well as relate our results to known bounds on chaotic dynamics.
