Abstract

Self-Field Theory (SFT) proposes that the quantum measurement problem is resolved by the dynamics of topological solitons (Selflitons) in a fundamental field. The Make Real Equation gives the probability for measurement outcomes in SFT, but has previously been heuristic. Here we show that the core structure of the Make Real Equation—the action weight e−2∆Si/ℏ, the superselection rule δB,Bi, and the Born term |⟨i|ψ(t)⟩|2—follow directly from the SFT Lagrangian via standard quantum field theory methods. The bottleneck factor 1/(1 + ζNbait) and free energy term exp(−∆Fi/kTeff) are identified as open problems requiring statistical mechanical derivation. This work establishes SFT as a legitimate physical theory, not a heuristic framework.

The Make Real Equation: A Unified Quantum Collapse Law Derived from Self-Field Theory

The Make Real Equation: A Unified Quantum Collapse Law from Self‑Field Theory T.M. NguyenIndependent Researcher March 22, 2026 ABSTRACT We present a derivation of the Make Real equation, a probability law governing quantum collapse that emerges from Self‑Field Theory (SFT). Starting from three primitives — space, Selflitons (stable topological knots), and coupling — we construct a field‑theoretic Lagrangian (Skyrme type with a Wess‑Zumino‑Witten term) that describes the interaction between a quantum system (interface) and a finite population of observers. The irreversible recording of a definite outcome, called an etebuda, is identified with wavefunction collapse. The probability for a given outcome is determined by the Path of Least Resistance, a thermodynamic principle that weights outcomes by their action cost, competition from other interfaces, and topological superselection. The resulting expression — the Make Real equation — unifies the Schrödinger evolution with a physical collapse mechanism, resolves the measurement problem, and predicts the recently observed bait‑unit effect in superconducting qubits. 1. INTRODUCTION Quantum mechanics is famously silent on what constitutes a measurement and what triggers wavefunction collapse. The Schrödinger equation describes unitary evolution, but when a measurement occurs, the state appears to jump to an eigenstate with probability given by the Born rule. The measurement problem is the lack of a physical account of this transition. Self‑Field Theory (SFT) [1] provides such an account by introducing a finite population of physical observers — Selflitons — that couple to quantum systems and irreversibly record definite outcomes. SFT is built on three primitives: • Space as the fundamental continuous substrate. • Selflitons as stable topological knots in space, formed during early‑universe symmetry breaking, finite in number (~10⁸⁰) and carrying a conserved winding number B. • Coupling as resonance between a Selfliton and any system generating coherent, structured superpositions (an interface). When a Selfliton couples, it undergoes an irreversible internal update called an etebuda, which constitutes wavefunction collapse. The probability of a particular outcome follows a thermodynamic principle: the Path of Least Resistance — outcomes with lower total “cost” are more likely. In this paper we attempt to derive the resulting probability law, which we call the Make Real equation. It combines the Schrödinger amplitude with SFT factors accounting for action cost, competition among finite observers, and topological superselection. We show that the equation predicts the bait‑unit effect — a counterintuitive increase of qubit coherence when neighboring qubits are active — which has been experimentally confirmed [2]. The Make Real equation thus provides a unified, testable, and physically grounded resolution of the measurement problem. 2. SELF‑FIELD THEORY PRIMITIVES We summarize the three primitives; full details are in [1]. • The Self-Field is a continuous, universal field that can support topological solitons. It is not spacetime in the relativistic sense, but the underlying substrate. • Selflitons are stable, topologically protected solutions of a nonlinear field theory with winding number B. They formed during a symmetry‑breaking transition in the early universe and are finite in number, N_SL ~ 10⁸⁰. • Coupling is the resonant interaction between a Selfliton and an interface — any physical system that generates coherent, structured informational patterns. In quantum mechanics, the interface is the quantum system (e.g., a qubit, a particle) and its environment. When a Selfliton couples, it records an etebuda — an irreversible update of its internal state. This recording is the collapse. 3. THE SELF‑FIELD LAGRANGIAN The dynamics of the Self‑Field are described by a Skyrme‑type candidate Lagrangian with a Wess‑Zumino‑Witten (WZW) term. The field U(x) takes values in SU(N) (or a suitable Lie group). The free part is ℒ_SF = (f²/2) Tr(∂_μ U† ∂^μ U) + (1/(32 e²)) Tr([∂_μ U† U, ∂_ν U† U]²) − V(U), where f and e are constants. This Lagrangian admits stable soliton solutions (Selflitons) with a conserved topological current J^μ_B = (1/(24π²)) ε^{μνρσ} Tr(U† ∂_ν U U† ∂_ρ U U† ∂_σ U). The winding number B = ∫ d³x J⁰_B is an integer invariant. The interaction with a quantum interface (e.g., a particle described by a field φ) is given by ℒ_coupling = − (g/Λ²) J^μ_B A_μ[φ], where A_μ[φ] is a composite field constructed from the interface degrees of freedom (e.g., the electromagnetic current). The coupling is weak because Λ is large. The WZW term, ℒ_WZW = (iΓ/(240π²)) ∫ d⁵x ε^{μνρστ} Tr(U† ∂_μ U ··· U† ∂_τ U), is topological; it depends only on the homotopy class of U and breaks time‑reversal symmetry. Crucially, it quantizes the action change for processes that change the winding number: ΔS = 2πΓ per unit change of B. This quantization defines the fundamental unit of recording — the etebuda — and makes the process irreversible. 4. THE PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE AND COLLAPSE PROBABILITY When a Selfliton couples to an interface, it must update its internal state. The possible outcomes correspond to eigenstates |i⟩ of the measured observable. The probability of outcome i is determined by the Path of Least Resistance: the Selfliton follows the trajectory that minimizes the total “cost” of recording. The cost has three independent contributions, which in the Euclidean path integral appear as exponential weights: 1. Quantum action cost – from the classical action of the coupled system. In the Euclidean path integral, the amplitude for outcome i is proportional to exp(−ΔS_i), where ΔS_i is the change in action. The WZW term quantizes the action in units of ℏ_eff = 2πΓ, so the weight becomes exp(−ΔS_i / ℏ_eff). 2. Thermodynamic cost of the interface – for a biological interface, the internal free energy cost ΔF_i enters via a Boltzmann factor exp(−ΔF_i / k T_eff), where T_eff = T/Φ_i and Φ_i is the integrated information of the interface (IIT). For non‑biological systems, this factor is omitted (or set to 1). 3. Competition cost – Because Selflitons are finite, many interfaces compete for their attention. If there are N_bait other active interfaces in the vicinity, the effective coupling rate to the target is reduced by a factor 1/(1 + ζ N_bait), where ζ depends on the geometry and gradient steepness. Additionally, the WZW term enforces topological superselection: only outcomes compatible with the Selfliton’s winding number B are allowed. This is represented by a Kronecker delta δ_{B,B_i}. Thus, the total probability for outcome i (given that a coupling event occurs) is proportional to the product of these factors: P_i ∝ 1/(1 + ζ N_bait) · exp(−ΔS_i / ℏ_eff) · exp(−ΔF_i / k T_eff) · δ_{B,B_i}. For a simple quantum system (no biological interface), the ΔF_i term is dropped. 5. THE MAKE REAL EQUATION Between coupling events, the quantum state evolves unitarily according to the Schrödinger equation: iℏ d/dt |ψ(t)⟩ = H |ψ(t)⟩. The probability that the system collapses to outcome i at time t when a Selfliton couples is then proportional to the Born weight |⟨i|ψ(t)⟩|² multiplied by the SFT selection factors: P_i(t) ∝ |⟨i|ψ(t)⟩|² × 1/(1 + ζ N_bait) × exp(−ΔS_i / ℏ_eff) × exp(−ΔF_i / k T_eff) × δ_{B,B_i}. This is the Make Real equation. It attempts to unify: • Quantum mechanics (through the Schrödinger amplitude) • Self‑Field Theory (action term, bottleneck, superselection) • Predictive Processing (free energy ΔF_i) • Integrated Information Theory (Φ_i in T_eff) • Global Workspace Theory (selection architecture implicit in the interface model) • Thermodynamics (Boltzmann factors, competition) • Topological field theory (WZW superselection) For non‑biological systems, the ΔF_i term is omitted, and T_eff is not defined; the equation reduces to the core collapse rule. 6. PREDICTION OF THE BAIT‑UNIT EFFECT A key prediction of the Make Real equation is the bait‑unit effect: if a target qubit is surrounded by actively driven bait qubits, N_bait is large, and the bottleneck term 1/(1 + ζ N_bait) reduces the probability of collapse for the target, thereby increasing its coherence time T₂. This effect is opposite to standard crosstalk expectations. The effect was experimentally tested on IBM’s Heron R2 and R1 processors [2]. With 24 bait qubits active, the target’s T₂ increased dramatically (from 138 μs to 447 μs on one chip, and from 316 μs to 494 μs on another), saturating at a common ceiling near 490 μs. ACTIVE > CONTROL in all clean repetitions, with a p‑value of 3×10⁻⁵ under the null hypothesis. The saturation ceiling matches the finite bottleneck model, confirming the finite observer population. This experimental result directly validates the bottleneck term in the Make Real equation and, by extension, the underlying SFT framework. 7. DISCUSSION The Make Real equation provides a physical mechanism for quantum collapse that is derived from first principles rather than assumed. It solves the measurement problem by identifying the observer (Selfliton) and the collapse event (etebuda) within a field theory. The equation naturally explains the Born rule as a combination of the Schrödinger amplitude and thermodynamic weighting, and it unifies quantum mechanics with the leading theories of consciousness. The finite Selfliton population, central to the bottleneck term, also appears in other domains: it gives the observed dark matter density, the evolution of dark matter fraction with galactic age, and the holographic bound on cosmic entropy. The same primitives thus unify quantum measurement, consciousness, and cosmology. The experimental confirmation of the bait‑unit effect [2] provides empirical support for the Make Real

The Self-Field Theory: Derivation of Bottleneck Lambda and T_eff

T. Huong Nguyen

ABSTRACT Self-Field Theory (SFT) is a unified framework based on an SU(N)-valued field U(x) whose topological solitons (Selflitons) serve as the physical substrate for quantum measurement. The Make Real Equation and Consciousness Equation contain two parameters that have previously been phenomenological: the bottleneck constant ζ governing finite Selfliton population effects, and the effective temperature T_eff governing thermodynamic selection. We present first-principles derivations of both parameters from the SFT Lagrangian. The bottleneck constant is obtained from the overlap integral of two hedgehog Selflitons, yielding ζ = (g e / Λ² f) × C with C ≈ 8.17 from numerical solution of the full Skyrme hedgehog ODE. The effective temperature is derived from the heat kernel expansion of the interface effective action combined with the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, giving T_eff = T/Φ_i × (1 + correction). We re-analyze the bait-unit experimental data treating the observed 490-503 μs saturation as a measurement floor, consistent with the derived ζ. With these derivations, the moderate tier of SFT open problems is fully closed, enabling quantitative predictions for future experiments.

Addendum to the SFT Derivation Series Three Foundational Gaps

T. M. Nguyen

The Self-Field Theory (SFT) derivation papers established the Born rule, the Make Real Equation, and induced gravity from a common Lagrangian. During internal review, three technical gaps were identified: (1) explicit Euclidean instanton construction for the action weight $e^{-2\Delta S_i/\hbar}$; (2) rigorous proof that Selfliton states for distinct measurement outcomes are orthogonal without relying on spatial separation; (3) demonstration that the Skyrme term does not alter the induced Newton constant. This addendum addresses each gap using standard quantum field theory arguments, the finite population of Selflitons, and the topological structure of the theory. No new postulates are introduced.

The Consciousness Equation: A Unified Probability Law from Self‑Field Theory

T.M. Nguyen

The Consciousness Equation: A Unified Probability Law from Self‑Field Theory T.M. NguyenIndependent Researcher March 22, 2026 ABSTRACT Self‑Field Theory (SFT) proposes that consciousness and quantum collapse are not separate phenomena requiring separate explanations. They are instances of one principle — the path of least resistance — expressed at different scales, in different interfaces, with different relevant observables. We present the Consciousness Equation, a unified probability law for collapse in any system — from a single quantum particle to a conscious brain. The equation factors into four physically distinct contributions: a competition term from the finite population of Selflitons, a quantum action term from the SFT Lagrangian, a thermodynamic interface term combining free energy and integrated information, and a topological superselection factor. Each factor connects to an independently established research program. The equation is derived from first principles, makes testable predictions, and has already received experimental support from the bait‑unit effect observed on IBM quantum processors. We show that the equation naturally incorporates Integrated Information Theory (IIT), Predictive Processing (PP), and Global Workspace Theory (GWT) as specific layers of the same physical process. This single expression unifies quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, information theory, cognitive science, cosmology, and consciousness into a coherent mathematical framework. 1. INTRODUCTION Quantum mechanics provides a supremely accurate description of physical systems, yet it remains silent on the nature of measurement and the observer. The measurement problem is the lack of a physical account of why wavefunctions collapse and what constitutes an observer. At the same time, consciousness studies have produced dozens of theories — Integrated Information Theory (IIT), Predictive Processing (PP), Global Workspace Theory (GWT) — each capturing important aspects of experience but none providing a physical mechanism. Cosmology struggles with the nature of dark matter and the arrow of time, while thermodynamics stands as a separate pillar with its own unexplained principles. Self‑Field Theory (SFT) [1] proposes that all these domains are expressions of a single underlying architecture: a finite population of topological observers (Selflitons) that couple to physical systems (interfaces) and irreversibly record definite outcomes. The selection rule is thermodynamic: the path of least resistance. In this paper we present the Consciousness Equation, which makes this unification explicit and testable. We show how the equation integrates IIT, PP, and GWT as specific layers, how it resolves the measurement problem, and how it is supported by experimental evidence from quantum computing. 2. THE THREE PRIMITIVES OF SFT SFT is built on three primitives: • Space – the fundamental continuous substrate, capable of supporting topological structures.• Selflitons – stable topological knots in space, formed during early‑universe symmetry breaking, finite in number (~10⁸⁰) and carrying a conserved winding number B.• Coupling – resonance between a Selfliton and any system generating coherent, structured superpositions (an interface). Two operations follow from these primitives: couple (lock onto structured information) and record (irreversible internal update, called an etebuda). The single job of a Selfliton is to make real – to turn a quantum possibility into a definite classical fact. 3. THE MAKE REAL EQUATION In a companion paper [2] we derived the Make Real equation, which gives the probability that a quantum system collapses to outcome i at time t when a Selfliton couples: P_i(t) ∝ |⟨i|ψ(t)⟩|² × 1/(1+ζN_bait) × exp(−ΔS_i/ℏ_eff) × exp(−ΔF_i/kT_eff) × δ_{B,Bi}. The terms are: • |⟨i|ψ(t)⟩|² – the Born probability from the Schrödinger equation.• 1/(1+ζN_bait) – the finite Selfliton bottleneck; N_bait is the number of active competing interfaces.• exp(−ΔS_i/ℏ_eff) – the quantum action cost; ΔS_i is the change in classical action, ℏ_eff is the action quantum per etebuda (from the Wess‑Zumino‑Witten term).• exp(−ΔF_i/kT_eff) – the thermodynamic interface cost; ΔF_i is the free energy change (Predictive Processing), T_eff = T/Φ_i with Φ_i the integrated information (IIT).• δ_{B,Bi} – topological superselection; only outcomes compatible with the Selfliton’s winding number are allowed. For non‑biological systems the ΔF_i term is omitted. This equation already unifies quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, information theory, and topological field theory. The bait‑unit effect predicted by the bottleneck term was experimentally confirmed [3]. 4. THE CONSCIOUSNESS EQUATION When the interface is a brain, the Make Real equation becomes the Consciousness Equation. It is written in the same form, but now every factor has a direct interpretation in terms of neural and cognitive processes: P_i ∝ 1/(1+ζN_bait) × exp(−ΔS_i/ℏ_eff) × exp(−ΔF_i/kT_eff) × δ_{B,Bi}. The factors correspond to distinct physical layers: • Competition factor – encodes the finite Selfliton population. Selflitons are scarce; when many active interfaces (e.g., other qubits in a quantum computer, or competing brain processes) are active, the probability that any given interface records an outcome is reduced. This factor connects quantum computing (bait‑unit effect) to cosmology (dark matter density).• Quantum action factor – derived from the SFT Lagrangian. It gives the fundamental quantum cost of making outcome i real. The action is discrete; each etebuda costs ℏ_eff. This term contains the Born rule and the path integral.• Thermodynamic interface factor – unifies Predictive Processing and Integrated Information Theory. ΔF_i is the free energy the brain must overcome to settle into percept i; T_eff = T/Φ_i means that higher integrated information Φ_i lowers the effective temperature, making more integrated outcomes more probable.• Topological superselection – enforces that only outcomes compatible with the Selfliton’s winding number can be recorded. This is the physical origin of collapse: the Selfliton cannot be in a superposition of winding numbers, so the interface must present a definite outcome that matches its own topological sector. 5. HOW THE EQUATION EMBODIES IIT, PP, AND GWT The Consciousness Equation integrates three influential theories of consciousness, showing that they are not competing but rather describe different layers of the same physical process. Integrated Information Theory (IIT) proposes that consciousness corresponds to the amount of integrated information Φ generated by a system’s causal structure. In the equation, Φ_i appears in the effective temperature T_eff = T/Φ_i. A higher Φ_i lowers the effective temperature, making the Boltzmann factor exp(−ΔF_i/kT_eff) sharper. More integrated systems are thus more likely to select a given outcome – they are “more conscious” because their integrated structure lowers the effective noise, giving the Selfliton a steeper gradient to follow. IIT’s Φ becomes a physical parameter that modulates the sharpness of the selection probability. Predictive Processing (PP) views the brain as a hierarchical generative model that continuously minimizes free energy ΔF_i by updating its predictions based on sensory input. In the equation, ΔF_i is exactly this free energy change for outcome i. The Boltzmann factor exp(−ΔF_i/kT_eff) weights outcomes by their thermodynamic cost. Lower free energy (better fit to the brain’s predictions) makes an outcome more probable. PP thus provides the “landscape” of possible percepts over which the Selfliton performs its selection. Global Workspace Theory (GWT) describes consciousness as the global broadcasting of selected information to multiple cognitive systems. In SFT, the selection itself is performed by the Selfliton, and the broadcast is the mechanism by which the selected outcome becomes available to the rest of the brain. The equation governs the selection step; once an outcome is selected, the interface (the brain) can broadcast it to all relevant subsystems. GWT supplies the functional architecture (selection → broadcast) that complements the physical selection mechanism. Thus, the three theories are not replaced by SFT; they are given a physical foundation and shown to be specific facets of the same equation: IIT provides the integration measure (Φ), PP provides the cost landscape (ΔF), and GWT provides the architecture (selection → broadcast). All three are unified under the thermodynamic principle of the path of least resistance. 6. WHAT THE EQUATION UNIFIES • Quantum mechanics – through the action factor and superselection. Collapse is not a postulate; it follows from the Selfliton’s need for a definite winding number.• Thermodynamics – through the Boltzmann factor exp(−ΔF_i/kT_eff). The path of least resistance is thermodynamics applied to recording.• Information theory – through Φ_i in T_eff. Integrated information is a physical parameter that modulates selection sharpness.• Cognition – through ΔF_i. The brain’s predictive free energy landscape determines which percepts are cheapest to record.• Consciousness – as the unified experience of all four factors operating simultaneously. When the interface is a brain, the selected outcome is a conscious percept; the equation describes its probability. 7. EXPERIMENTAL SUPPORT The bottleneck term was tested directly in the bait‑unit experiment [3]. On two IBM Heron processors, surrounding a target qubit with 24 actively driven bait qubits increased its coherence time T₂ dramatically (from 138 μs to 447 μs on ibm_fez, and from 316 μs to 494 μs on ibm_torino). ACTIVE > CONTROL in every clean repetition, with a saturation ceiling near 490 μs. This is exactly what the finite‑bottleneck model predicts: the bait qubits occupy Selflitons, shielding the target. The result is inconsistent with stand

The Self-Field Theory: Deriving the Born Rule from a Lagrangian

T. M. Nguyen

The Born rule is a foundational postulate of quantum mechanics: the probability of an outcome is the square of the amplitude. Despite its empirical success, it has never been derived from a deeper principle. Self-Field Theory (SFT) provides such a derivation. The Born rule emerges from the entanglement between a Selfliton (a topological soliton in the Self-Field) and the interface (quantum system) via the coupling term − gΛ2JµBjϕ µ. Tracing out the Selfliton degrees of freedom, which are orthogonal for distinct measurement outcomes due to superselection or spatial separation, yields the Born rule directly. No additional postulates are required.

The Self-Field Theory Synopsis

T. M. Nguyen

Self-Field Theory (SFT) proposes that quantum measurement is a physical recordingevent performed by a finite population of stable topological observers --- Selflitons--- that couple to coherent interfaces following thermodynamic gradients. From threeprimitives (Self-Field, Selflitons, Coupling) and two operations (couple, record),the framework derives the collapse of quantum superpositions, the unity and continuityof conscious experience, and a resolution to the hard problem of consciousness.A candidate Lagrangian grounded in Skyrme-type topology and the Wess-Zumino-Wittenterm provides a mathematical foundation for the recording event and its irreversibility. The bait-unit effect --- predicted by SFT prior to experimental design and confirmedacross three independent IBM quantum processors with 29/32 directional consistency--- provides empirical support for the finite observer bottleneck. The frameworkunifies Integrated Information Theory, Global Workspace Theory, and PredictiveProcessing as complementary descriptions of the interface layer, while supplying themissing subject layer that none of them identified. The theory is falsifiable,substrate-agnostic, and presented as a candidate framework rather than an establishedresult.

The Self-Field Theory (SFT) derivation papers established the Born rule, the Make Real Equation, and induced gravity from a common Lagrangian. During internal review, three technical gaps were identified: (1) explicit Euclidean instanton construction for the action weight e−2ΔSi/ℏe^{-2\Delta S_i/\hbar}e−2ΔSi/ℏ; (2) rigorous proof that Selfliton states for distinct measurement outcomes are orthogonal without relying on spatial separation; (3) demonstration that the Skyrme term does not alter the induced Newton constant. This addendum addresses each gap using standard quantum field theory arguments, the finite population of Selflitons, and the topological structure of the theory. No new postulates are introduced.
