Coherent control of the photoinduced transition in a strongly correlated material

Eduardo B. Molinero, Rui E. F. Silva

The use of intense tailored light fields is the perfect tool to achieve ultrafast control of electronic properties in quantum materials. Among them, Mott insulators are materials in which strong electron-electron interactions drive the material into an insulating phase. When shining a Mott insulator with a strong laser pulse, the electric field may induce the creation of doublon-hole pairs, triggering a photoinduced transition into a metallic state. In this paper, we take advantage of the threshold character of this photoinduced transition and we propose a setup that consists of a midinfrared laser pulse and a train of short pulses separated by a half period of the midinfrared with alternating phases. By varying the time delay between the two pulses and the internal carrier envelope phase of the short pulses, we achieve control of the phase transition, which leaves its fingerprint at its high harmonic spectrum.

Photoinduced insulator-metal transition in one-dimensional Mott insulators

Akira Takahashi, Hisashi Itoh, Masaki Aihara

We theoretically investigate the dynamics of insulator-metal transition induced by light-pulse excitation in one-dimensional Mott insulators. We adopt the Pariser--Parr--Pople model and the pump-probe signal is obtained by numerically calculating the time development of the state excited by light pulse. When the photoexcitation density is below about 10%, an extremely small portion of the energy eigenstates dominates the optical process and the spin-charge separation holds in these dominant energy eigenstates. As a result, the Mott gap and the short-range antiferromagnetic (AF) spin order are preserved and spin relaxation does not occur. When the density is above the value, a metallic state without the Mott gap is photogenerated and the magnitude of the short-range AF spin order is significantly reduced by photoexcitation. This is consistent with the experimentally observed photoinduced Mott transition. Furthermore, spin relaxation occurs in the metallic state. This photoinduced Mott transition is a manifestation of the spin-charge coupling in the intensely photoexcited states.

Photoinduced pairing in Mott insulators

Satoshi Ejima, Holger Fehske

Utilizing time-evolution techniques in (infinite) matrix-product-state representation, we study the non-equilibrium dynamics of driven Mott insulators and demonstrate photoinduced \eta η pairing directly in the thermodynamic limit. Analyzing the time evolution of the corresponding pairing correlations, we determine the optimal laser pump parameters for which long-range \eta η -pairing becomes dominant after pulse irradiation. The time-dependent photoemission spectra for this optimal pump parameter set show clear signatures of the photoinduced insulator-to-metal phase transition related to the formation of \eta η pairs.
