Quantum Communication, Measurement and Computing (QCMC): The Tenth International Conference

Timothy C. Ralph, Ping Koy Lam

The conference proceedings will be of interest to physicists, engineers and mathematicians working with quantum mechanical systems and frontier technologies. The QCMC series of conferences provides a forum for the presentation and discussion of new results from the field of quantum information. Quantum information is the study of information stored in quantum systems. The unique properties of quantum mechanics lead to the ability to perform information tasks that are hard or impossible for classical systems.

Workshop and Conference Abstracts

IEEE Quantum Week 2022 Workshops provide forums for group discussions (i.e., 20-50 participants) on QCE22 topics in quantum research, practice, education, and applications.Workshops provide opportunities for researchers, practitioners, scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, developers, students, educators, programmers, and newcomers to exchange and discuss scientific and engineering ideas at an early stage before they have matured to warrant a conference or journal publication. In this manner, an IEEE Quantum Week workshop serves as a forum for common interests or as an incubator for a scientific community to form a research roadmap or share a research agenda.Workshops are the key to sustaining, growing, and evolving IEEE Quantum Week in the future. For the first time, the QCE22 program includes a colocated conference, the Quantum Science and Engineering Conference, where education researchers and practitioners come together to discuss methodologies for curriculum and tool development for instruction and teaching. We expect this to become an annual event, emphasizing the importance of education in building a broad and diverse quantum community and workforce.xlvii

Bridging the Quantum Divide: Aligning Academic and Industry Goals in Software Engineering

Jake Zappin, Trevor Stalnaker, Oscar Chaparro +1 more

This position paper examines the substantial divide between academia and industry within quantum software engineering. For example, while academic research related to debugging and testing predominantly focuses on a limited subset of primarily quantum-specific issues, industry practitioners face a broader range of practical concerns, including software integration, compatibility, and real-world implementation hurdles. This disconnect mainly arises due to academia's limited access to industry practices and the often confidential, competitive nature of quantum development in commercial settings. As a result, academic advancements often fail to translate into actionable tools and methodologies that meet industry needs. By analyzing discussions within quantum developer forums, we identify key gaps in focus and resource availability that hinder progress on both sides. We propose collaborative efforts aimed at developing practical tools, methodologies, and best practices to bridge this divide, enabling academia to address the application-driven needs of industry and fostering a more aligned, sustainable ecosystem for quantum software development.

Challenges and opportunities of quantum-computational chemistry

Zhenyu Li, Jie Liu, Xiangjian Shen +1 more

This article has summarized the main academic communications from the forum titled as “Theoretical Chemistry in the Age of Quantum Computational Chemistry” which has been granted by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and held in Hefei on July 31, 2022. Firstly, the main characters of quantum-computational chemistry (QCC) have been introduced. And some current important challenges of the QCC are also pointed out. Secondly, we have mainly discussed the progress of the QCC in China and new research directions based on current noisy and future fault-tolerant quantum computing platforms. At the same time, in order to meet the major technical needs in future developments, some key scientific issues in this field are suggested in the next 5–10 years, and some strategic suggestions for strengthening the support of NSFC were proposed.
