On the Nature of Quantization: Light, Time, and the Contraction of Possibility

Abstract

For over a century, physics has treated time as a continuous background parameter while quantizing everything else—fields, energy, and angular momentum. This paper argues that the assignment of discreteness has been reversed: Light is not quantized; energy is not quantized. The record is quantized—and the record is what generates time. Within the Emergence as Regime Formation framework, temporal advance arises through irreversible record formation governed by the Future Contraction Postulate: Δt = −kₜ Δ ln Ω where Ω represents generative capacity—the number of realizable configurations remaining to a system. Each irreversible recording event reduces Ω and generates a finite increment of physical time. The paper demonstrates that experimental phenomena commonly interpreted as evidence for quantized light—including the photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, blackbody radiation, photon anti-bunching, and Hong–Ou–Mandel interference—are fully consistent with a framework in which: • The electromagnetic field remains continuous• Sources and detectors undergo discrete irreversible recording events• Apparent field quantization arises from projecting continuous processes onto a discrete lattice of records Explicit derivations of photon anti-bunching statistics and the Hong–Ou–Mandel interference dip are provided without invoking Fock space or field quantization. The results reproduce the standard quantitative predictions of quantum optics while relocating the source of discreteness from the field to the recording process. This relocation dissolves several foundational puzzles in physics, including: • Wave–particle duality• The quantum measurement problem• The emergence of classicality• The arrow of time• The “problem of time” in quantum gravity Within the broader Emergence as Regime Formation program, the same recording dynamics generate quantum mechanics, gauge theory, and gravitational structure as regime limits of a single continuity equation with irreversible recording.

A Physical Law for the Local Generation of Time: Irreversible Record Formation and the Contraction of Accessible Futures

Harold D. Kirk

AbstractStandard quantum theory presupposes an external temporal parameter, while general relativityadmits no preferred global time, producing the problem of time in quantum gravity. We developa framework in which physical time is not fundamental but is locally generated by irreversibleclassical record formation in open quantum systems. We introduce the Future Contraction Postulate (FCP), defining the local physical time incrementas proportional to the logarithmic contraction of the record-compatible future state-spacevolume Ω.Δt = −kₜ ΔlnΩ.where Ω denotes the coarse-grained set of decoherence-stable macroscopic futures compatiblewith existing classical records. In the continuum limit of Markovian decoherence, we derive theunique local time-generation lawdt = kₜ Γ(τ ) dτ,relating temporal generation to the irreversible record-formation (decoherence) rate Γ(τ ). The framework predicts the existence of atemporal regimes in the limit Γ → 0 and establishesa sharp thermodynamic falsifiability criterion: any system exhibiting stable classical recordswithout monotonic contraction of Ω would contradict the postulate. In macroscopic thermodynamicregimes the generated time coincides with standard proper time measured by physicalclocks. We further discuss speculative cosmological implications in which classical spacetimegeometry is interpreted as an emergent historical residue of irreversible record formation.

Quantum Mechanics as Unrealized Temporal Capacity: The Microscopic Limit of Emergent Time

Harold D. Kirk

Within an emergent-time framework developed in Papers I–IV, physical time is not taken as fundamental but is locally generated through irreversible classical record formation. Mass is interpreted as temporal capacity, gravitation as spatial variation in temporal realization rate, and black holes as saturation limits of temporal realization. This paper situates quantum mechanics as the microscopic limit of unrealized temporal capacity. In the absence of irreversible record formation, coherent quantum systems generate no intrinsic time. Unitary evolution is reinterpreted as bookkeeping over unrealized future possibilities rather than evolution within a pre-existing temporal background. Measurement and decoherence are identified as the physical processes through which temporal structure is locally instantiated by irreversibly fixing classical records. Quantum states are interpreted ontologically as structured catalogs of unrealized futures rather than physical entities evolving in time. This interpretation introduces no new dynamics and modifies no equations of quantum mechanics; its contribution is interpretive rather than formal, clarifying the ontological status of quantum states, measurement, microscopic reversibility, and delayed-choice phenomena within an emergent-time framework.

Discrete Dynamics as the Origin of Spacetime, Quantum Probability, and Friction and Emergent Rules Beyond the Born Rule

Borz, Vanni

This framework preserves the empirical success of existing physical theories while proposing an alternative set of foundational assumptions from which their standard formulations emerge as effective limits. Abstract — Key Innovative Points Discrete Updating FabricThe theory postulates a fundamental discrete fabric whose elementary constituents evolve through local update processes, replacing continuous fields and background spacetime as primary entities. Irreversible Local Dynamics as FundamentalUnlike standard approaches based on unitary or reversible evolution, irreversibility is taken as ontological. Physical law emerges from irreversible local updates rather than from imposed symmetries or variational principles. Emergent Time and SpacetimeTime is not assumed as a fundamental parameter but arises from the counting of update events. Spacetime geometry emerges as a coarse-grained description of update activity across the fabric. Quantum Probability from Microstate CountingQuantum probabilities, including the Born rule, emerge from combinatorial counting of compatible microstates of the fabric, rather than being postulated axiomatically. Gravity as Update-Rate ModulationGravitational phenomena are interpreted as variations in local update rates, leading to effective curvature, time dilation, and relativistic behavior at macroscopic scales. Mass as Resistance to UpdateMass and inertia arise from stable topological structures within the fabric that resist updates, providing a dynamical origin of mass without introducing fundamental mass parameters. Fundamental Dissipation and IrreversibilityDissipation is intrinsic to the fabric dynamics and not an emergent statistical effect. The arrow of time follows directly from the irreversible nature of local updates. Extension Beyond Fundamental PhysicsThe same discrete framework accounts for macroscopic dissipative phenomena—such as friction, stick–slip dynamics, superlubricity, growth, and self-organization—linking fundamental physics and material behavior within a single process-based model. iversality Without Fundamental SymmetryLarge-scale physical laws emerge as dynamical attractors of the updating fabric, arising through elimination of unstable configurations rather than enforcement of fundamental symmetries. Emergent Rules Beyond the Born Rule in the Unified Fabric Framework The same discrete-fabric + local-update + coarse-graining structure generates multiple quantum rules without postulation. 1. Schrödinger Dynamics as an Emergent Long-Wavelength Limit Local deterministic updates on a discrete fabric admit spectral modes. In the long-wavelength limit, their evolution converges to a Schrödinger-type equation. No quantum dynamics is postulated.Only update rules and spectral structure are assumed. 2. Superposition from Coarse-Grained Microstate Counting Macroscopic amplitudes arise as sums over compatible microstates.Linearity follows from additive contributions at the amplitude level. Superposition is therefore emergent. It reflects coarse-graining, not a fundamental axiom. 3. Interference as Cross-Terms in Microstate Combinatorics Probabilities are quadratic because amplitudes sum before squaring.Cross-terms correspond exactly to interference effects. Interference is not assumed. It is a combinatorial consequence of microstate superposition. 4. Tensor Product Structure and the Origin of Entanglement Composite systems correspond to composite regions of the fabric.Global microstates factorize only if compatibility constraints separate. Entanglement arises when constraints couple subsystems. It is structural, not mysterious. 5. Decoherence from Phase Inaccessibility Observers access only coarse-grained variables.Rapidly varying microstate phases average out. Off-diagonal terms are dynamically suppressed.Decoherence emerges without postulation. 6. Measurement Collapse as Constraint Reduction Measurement is an interaction that reduces compatible microstates. The effective state updates accordingly. Collapse is not a new law.It is constraint updating under coarse-graining. 7. The Arrow of Time from Asymmetric State Counting Entropy is defined as the logarithm of compatible microstates.Local updates generically move toward larger compatible sets. Irreversibility is structural. It does not rely on subjective ignorance. 8. Coulomb Friction from Discrete Event Statistics Friction equals dissipated update energy per unit distance. The Coulomb law emerges from counting active interfacial events. The friction coefficient is not fundamental. It decomposes into microscopic event parameters. 9. Superlubricity as the Event-Free Limit Superlubricity occurs when locking events are suppressed.Dissipation is rare, not forbidden. This is a limit regime, not an exception. It confirms friction as emergent. 11. Conservation Laws from Update Invariance If the update rule is invariant under local transformations, conserved quantities emerge automatically. Noether’s theorem becomes emergent.Symmetry is a property of the update, not an axiom. 12. Classical Determinism from Phase Averaging At large scales, phase information becomes inaccessible.Only expectation values survive. Classical trajectories emerge statistically.Determinism is an effective limit. 13. Locality from Finite Update Propagation Updates propagate only through neighboring fabric nodes.Information speed is bounded. Causality is structural.Nonlocality is only apparent at coarse scales. 14. Emergent Speed Limit (c) The maximum update rate defines a universal speed. No signal can exceed it. The speed of light is not fundamental. It is a fabric update bound. 15. Metric Geometry from Update Delays Spatial curvature corresponds to spatially varying update rates.Time dilation is an update slowdown. Geometry is dynamical. The metric is emergent. 16. Equivalence Principle as a Structural Identity All stable update-resisting structures slow updates identically.Their response is universal. Quantization is not imposed.Continuum is an approximation. 19. Noise Spectra (1/f) from Avalanche Dynamics Update cascades produce scale-free event statistics.Long-range correlations appear. 1/f noise is generic. It signals discrete underlying dynamics. 20. What is Time

İlker Uğurlu

What is time? Is it a dimension through which physical systems evolve, a continuous background against which change unfolds, or an emergent construct inferred from physical processes? Despite its central role in physics, time enters theory almost exclusively through measurement, and every operational realization of timekeeping ultimately reduces to the functioning of clocks. This raises a foundational question that is rarely addressed explicitly: what physical quantity do clocks actually count? In this work, we adopt an operational perspective and introduce the Geometric Phase-Projection (GPP) framework, in which time is treated not as a primitive background parameter but as an ordered count of physically readable sections generated under a universal finite propagation bound. Within this framework, relativistic time dilation arises as a geometric projection effect, and the Lorentz factor emerges as a consequence of phase allocation rather than as a primary postulate. Although the GPP construction is fully consistent with standard relativistic predictions at the level of expectation values, it indicates a distinct and testable implication when timekeeping is modeled as an event-counting process: synchronization jitter. This effect originates from an intrinsic mismatch between discrete section counts of systems in relative motion—a temporal Moir'e--type phenomenon that is absent in models assuming perfectly continuous time. We emphasize that the present work does not purport to introduce a new physical theory, nor does it seek to modify the dynamical structure of special relativity or quantum mechanics. Rather, it shows that if time is generated through discrete event formation, a specific and falsifiable operational signature must necessarily arise. By linking geometric projection directly to clock synchronization, the framework outlines a concrete experimental strategy based on high-precision phase-locked optical clocks to probe whether temporal structure is fundamentally continuous or discretely generated. The framework further offers a local, non-retrocausal account of delayed-choice interference experiments by identifying interference patterns with global phase coherence conditions required for section formation, rather than with backward-in-time influence. The predicted synchronization jitter is expected to scale with relative velocity and gravitational potential differences and to lie within the sensitivity range of existing optical-clock networks, thereby transforming a longstanding conceptual question about the nature of time into an empirically tractable hypothesis testable with current metrological technology.

The Origin of the "Particle Nature" of Light — How a Continuous Transverse Wave Manifests Discrete Behavior when Coupled to Matter

卓冰 蒋

Quantum field theory describes the particle nature of electromagnetic radiation using the "photon," but has never explained why a fundamental particle exhibits such perfect wave behavior. This paper provides a complete alternative explanation: the photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, and antibunching experiments — landmark experiments considered proof of photon particle nature — require no photon concept. Quantization is not a property of light itself, but of the discrete energy level structure governing how bound electrons emit and absorb energy. Light remains a continuous transverse wave; discreteness results from electrons as "prisoners" in atomic "cages" that can only transition between specific energy steps. Waves propagate continuously and are emitted and absorbed in quantized form — the photon is not a particle, but the name of an energy-exchange event.

Frame–Record Dynamics: A Closed Structural Origin of Time, Irreversibility, and the Cosmological Baseline

Jeon JongHyoun

Time has never been observed to flow; what is observed is the irreversible ac- cumulation of realized physical states. We propose a closed structural worldviewin which spacetime is composed of densely packed discrete frames, and physical reality emerges through selective record formation among these frames. We de- fine a “record” as a physical stabilization event governed by structural resonance within the frame network. Irreversibility follows directly from record selection: al- ternative frame possibilities are discarded and accumulate as entropy. Within this framework, quantum probability is reidentified as coarse-graining over unresolved definite frame states. Furthermore, we reinterpret the cosmological constant not as a vacuum energy density, but as the statistical baseline of unrecovered (unrecorded) frame relaxation. This framework remaps persistent puzzles—time’s arrow, quan-tum measurement phenomenology, and the cosmological constant—under a single principle: not all frame possibilities are recorded.
