Practical Guide to Quantum Computing: Pauli-X Gate (X Operator)
Mikhail Pavlov
Abstract
Abstract The Pauli-X gate (X operator) is a fundamental single-qubit quantum gate that inverts the state of a qubit. It acts as a quantum analog of the classical NOT gate but extends its functionality to quantum superpositions. For a qubit in a superposition state α∣0⟩+β∣1⟩\alpha|0\rangle + \beta|1\rangleα∣0⟩+β∣1⟩, the X gate swaps the amplitudes, producing the state α∣1⟩+β∣0⟩\alpha|1\rangle + \beta|0\rangleα∣1⟩+β∣0⟩. The X gate is widely used for initializing qubit states, controlling computation flow, and building more complex quantum circuits. Its ability to operate on superposition states makes it essential for quantum algorithms, including those involving entanglement and interference. Understanding the Pauli-X gate is fundamental for designing and analyzing quantum circuits in practical quantum computing applications.
