Abstract As space missions—both manned and unmanned—expand beyond Earth’s orbit, the need for reliable and real-time communication between Earth and distant spacecraft becomes critical. Conventional radio-frequency communication is constrained by the speed of light, resulting in significant signal delays; for example, a message to Mars experiences a minimum one-way delay of approximately 8 minutes. Such delays hinder operational control and decision-making during critical maneuvers or emergencies. This paper explores quantum communication as a potential solution, leveraging quantum entanglement and superposition to establish instantaneous correlations between remote systems. By employing these quantum phenomena, it becomes theoretically possible to achieve real-time information exchange independent of conventional speed-of-light limitations. The study discusses foundational principles, potential implementation in space systems, and implications for future deep-space exploration.

Finally, we propose a network architecture for space exploration, aiming to take a look at the potential of quantum technology to establish communication between Earth and spacecraft by integrating terrestrial and non-terrestrial quantum networks.
The deeper into space, the more secure and high-speed missions targeting Mars and lunar habitats are needed. As our needs for secure and high-speed communication and also for powerful computing capabilities grow increasingly critical, it becomes evident that classical systems are not capable of meeting the extreme demands of space. This chapter explores how recent advances in quantum computing and quantum communication could come forward to meet these challenges head-on. Based on QKD and entanglement-based protocols of communication, it investigates how mission data, commands, and telemetry can be shielded from intercept or tamper also how some complex calculations and various data processing tasks that require quantum computing can be performed in deep space. Real world projects regarding Micius satellite of China act as case studies to demonstrate how theory is pitted against practice. In addition, the major technical hurdles are outlined, ranging from photon loss to synchronization problems. The path ahead for enabling the next generation of space communications infrastructure is also presented.
As NASA spacecraft explore deeper into the cosmos, speed-of-light-limited signal delays make it increasingly impractical to command missions from Earth. Future spacecraft will need greater onboard computing capacity to mimic human-level intelligence and autonomy. The solution might come from quantum computers, which offer properties of size, power, and robustness that are ideally suited to the space environment. The potential of quantum technologies goes far beyond enhanced computing capacity. Future space missions will involve direct participation of non-NASA scientists. This will necessitate allowing more open access to spacecraft systems via free-space communication links. Quantum cryptography would allow such channels to be made absolutely secure and invulnerable to attack by malevolent hackers. To explore these possibilities, this article describes the progress to date in understanding how quantum computers and related quantum information-processing devices might advance space exploration.

Aiming at the challenge of possibility and feasibility of the faster-than-light quantum communication, the principle is based on the microscopic mass-energy systems correlating with spacetime model and the mass-energy spacetime correlation interactions, we present a kind of possible faster-than-light quantum communication mechanism and its feasible working mode, namely via the microscopic mass-energy systems composed of two quantum entanglement particles correlate with spacetime, to solve the mechanism of transmitting its interactions, combine the nonlocality and quantum operability of quantum entanglements, and add the orderly storage working mode of entanglement particle pairs, with the correlating states between entanglement particle pairs correspond and convert into information encoding, namely could realize the long-distance real-time dynamical information exchange, linking-acting and communication, it also can be referred to as the faster-than-light quantum communication. In this communication procedure, to utilize the long-distance real-time dynamical linking-acting effects of quantum entanglement particles, no need of interaction propagators, directly create and carry out interactions, nonuse any carrier of transmitting information, there is no object in existence to need motion at all, naturally no the limit of speed of light also, therefore, such kind of communication mode is feasible in scientific principles, the presented communication method is feasible technologically. Such kind of communication method, no need of the realized conditions and related complicated systems of the information channels and information transmission carriers of common quantum teleportation systems, just can realize the working and operating mode of noninterference at all, unable interception, unable shield, absolute secrecy, faster-than-light, and the long-distance real-time quantum communication and remote control, which also can make its actual application in technology and engineering become feasible. That can be used in the environmental conditions that the existing communication and remote control technology can not apply or difficultly, for example deep stratum, deep sea, deep space, remote mountains, dangerous zone etc. Any other method can not realize the long-distance real-time communication and remote control.
