Abstract

Abstract The SU(1,1) interferometer, a nonlinear analog of the traditional Mach–Zehnder interferometer, has emerged as a powerful tool for achieving phase sensitivity beyond the standard quantum limit. In this work, we propose the use of a superposition of even and odd coherent states as input state to enhance the phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer. These non-classical states exhibit unique properties such as squeezing, entanglement, and quantum interference, which can be harnessed to improve metrological precision. Phase sensitivity is analyzed using single-intensity detection and homodyne detection schemes under both ideal and photon loss cases, which demonstrates significant improvements over classical and squeezed-vacuum inputs. In addition, we evaluate the quantum Cramér-Rao lower bound by employing the quantum Fisher information formalism, showing that it surpasses the standard quantum limit and approaches the Heisenberg limit under optimal conditions. Our results highlight the potential of the even and odd coherent states superposition in quantum metrology and provide a pathway for achieving ultra-precise phase measurements in SU(1,1) interferometers for applications in optical sensing, and quantum information processing.

Quantum-Enhanced Phase Estimation with Photon-Added Even and Odd Coherent States in an SU(1,1) Interferometer

Abdelmajid El Maaroufi, Mouad Ait Maskour, Bouchra Maroufi +2 more

We investigate phase estimation in an SU(1,1) interferometer employing $m$-photon-added even and odd coherent states as nonclassical input resources. The phase sensitivity is evaluated through intensity detection and the error propagation method, while the ultimate precision limit is determined from the quantum Cramér-Rao bound with the quantum Fisher information serving as the relevant metrological quantity. Our results demonstrate that photon addition significantly enhances the phase sensitivity, increases the quantum Fisher information, and reduces the quantum Cramér-Rao bound, leading to a clear improvement over the corresponding even and odd coherent states. Furthermore, the achievable sensitivity exceeds the standard quantum limit and gradually approaches the Heisenberg scaling with increasing photon-addition number. We also find that the $m$-photon-added even coherent states exhibit a modest advantage over their odd counterparts. As $m$ increases, however, this distinction becomes progressively weaker, suggesting that photon addition diminishes the role of the initial parity of the coherent state in determining the interferometric performance.

High-sensitivity phase estimation with a two-mode squeezed coherent state based on a Mach–Zehnder interferometer

Pengxiang Ruan, Jun Liu, Chenlu Li +3 more

Abstract A scheme is proposed based on a Mach–Zehnder interferometer with high phase sensitivity, utilizing a two-mode squeezed coherent state, generated by four-wave mixing, as input. The phase sensitivity of this scheme easily surpasses the Heisenberg limit when intensity difference detection is applied. Under phase-matching conditions, the quantum Cramér–Rao bound significantly exceeds the Heisenberg limit. Additionally, the scheme exhibits robustness against photon loss. When compared with the modified SU(1,1) interferometer with two coherent state inputs, this approach demonstrates superior measurement sensitivity, evaluated through various detection methods and the quantum Cramér–Rao bound. This work holds potential applications in quantum metrology.

Enhancing Phase Estimation in an SU(1,1) Interferometer via Kerr Nonlinearity and Photon Addition

Lifen Guo, Qingqian Kang, Zekun Zhao +7 more

ABSTRACT We enhance phase sensitivity in an SU(1,1) interferometer by combining a Kerr nonlinear phase shifter with multi‐photon addition. Using coherent and vacuum states as inputs, we analyze phase sensitivity and the quantum Fisher information under ideal and lossy conditions. We show that both phase sensitivity and the quantum Cramér‐Rao bound (QCRB) improve gradually as the total mean photon number increases. For the standard SU(1,1) interferometer, phase sensitivity does not saturate the QCRB, even with multi‐photon addition. In contrast, for the Kerr‐based SU(1,1) interferometer, phase sensitivity nearly saturates the QCRB under ideal conditions and remains optimal at high transmissivity under loss. The Kerr‐based scheme surpasses the standard quantum limit, approaches the sub‐Heisenberg limit, and exhibits enhanced robustness against moderate losses. Our scheme is feasible with current technology and provides a promising route for high‐precision quantum metrology.

Enhancement of the phase sensitivity with two-mode squeezed coherent state based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer

Jun Liu, Tao Shao, Yuanxiang Wang +4 more

We theoretically study the phase estimation based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with a two-mode squeezed coherent state. By maximizing the quantum Fisher information, we find that the quantum Cramér-Rao bounds (QCRB) can reach sub-Heisenberg limit under the phase-matched condition. The optimal phase sensitivity can reach the sub-shot noise limit (SNL) and approach the QCRB by employing the intensity difference detection. Meanwhile, compared with the MZI fed with a coherent plus a single-mode squeezed vacuum state, this scheme can have better performance by adjusting the squeezing parameter and the mean photon number. With the same parameter, our scheme shows more sensitive phase measurement than the SU(1,1) interferometer with a coherent plus a vacuum state. We also show that the phase sensitivity of our proposal can still reach the SNL when the loss of the photon is 36%. This scheme can provide potential applications in optical sensors.

Phase Estimation in Linear and Nonlinear Interferometers

Sushovit Adhikari

Phase estimation has a wide range of applications. Over the years, several strategies have been studied to improve precision in phase estimation. These strategies include using exotic quantum states to quantum detection schemes. This dissertation summarizes my effort in improving the precision of phase estimation with a linear and nonlinear interferometer. Chapter 1 introduces quantum optics and quantum metrology. I introduce all relevant quantum states of light used. We also look into tools and terminologies of quantum metrology such as Fisher information, shot-noise limit, Heisenberg limit, etc., along with examples of phase estimation with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In Chapter 2, I discuss multiple phase estimation using a multimode interferometer. Building upon previous work, our scheme consists of a multimode interferometer with single-photon inputs. By using a quantum Fisher information analysis, we show that our scheme gives a constant improvement over other schemes. We also show that our scheme with photon-number-resolving detection approaches the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound. Moreover, we also consider the probabilistic nature of photon emission at the input, and we study its effect on phase sensitivity. I discuss phase estimation with SU(1,1) interferometer in Chapter 3. We look at phase sensitivity in this interferometer with different input states. Namely, we consider two different phase estimation scheme, one using thermal and squeezed states, and others using coherent and displaced squeezed states with parity and on-off as a detection scheme. We also look into the effect of photon loss inside the interferometer. In Chapter 4, we revisit phase estimation in SU(1,1) interferometer from the perspective of quantum Fisher information. I discuss in detail a longstanding confusion regarding the use of quantum Fisher information in SU(1,1) interferometer. We show that phase averaging or quantum Fisher information matrix method is needed in general for calculating the phase sensitivity which resolves inconsistencies reported in previously published articles.

The Super Phase Sensitivity of an SU(1,1) Interferometer with a Two-Mode Squeezed Coherent State via Balanced Homodyne and Intensity Detection

Changlan Xu, Lei Wang, Shaoqiu Ke +2 more

We propose a novel scheme that is used for the enhancement of phase sensitivity. The SU(1,1) interferometer with a two-mode squeezed coherent state input, using balanced homodyne detection (BHD) and intensity detection (ID), is shown. Our results demonstrate that the phase sensitivity achieved via BHD outperforms that of ID. The optimal phase sensitivity via BHD surpasses the Heisenberg limit (HL) and approaches the quantum Cramér–Rao bound. A larger photon number and parameter strength can make the phase sensitivity better. Furthermore, we show the effects of internal and external losses on phase sensitivity in detail. When external loss reaches 10%, the phase sensitivity can reach the HL. Next, we have a detailed discussion on the impact of the squeezing parameter and photon number on phase sensitivity, which shows that our scheme has better phase sensitivity and enhanced robustness. This interferometer system thus holds significant potential for applications in quantum precision measurement.
