Quantum Channel Characterization in QKD: A Metrological Perspective

Fatemeh Khalesi, Ioan Tudosa, Francesco Picariello +2 more

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) offers secure communication by leveraging core principles of quantum mechanics.Characterization of QKD system is fundamental for comparing the experimental results provided by researchers.Unfortunately, there is no standardized or unified approach; therefore, different researchers present results that provide heterogeneous information, making comparisons difficult.A systematic analysis of the literature is necessary to identify common approaches from a metrological perspective. This paper provides an overview of measurements used to characterize quantum channels, with a focus on parameters such as attenuation, polarization effects, and timing stability. To support this analysis, real-world case studies are examined.

Coherent phase transfer for real-world twin-field quantum key distribution (Conference Presentation)

Nowadays, a technological challenge is to integrate quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols in already present telecommunication fiber networks. Twin-field QKD is one of the most promising techniques on long distances, but requires stabilizing the optical length of the communication channels between parties. Adapting interferometry techniques derived from frequency metrology, we developed a solution for the simultaneous key sharing and channel length control, and we demonstrated it on a 206 km field-deployed fiber with 65 dB loss. Our method reduces the quantum-bit-error-rate contributed by channel length variations to <1%, representing an effective solution for real-world quantum communications.

Security Standards and Best Practice Considerations for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD)

Carole A Harper

Abstract : Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems combine cryptographic primitives with quantum information theory to produce a theoretic unconditionally secure cryptographic key. However, real-world implementations of QKD systems are far from ideal and differ significantly from the theoretic model. Because of this, real-world QKD systems require additional practical considerations when implemented to achieve secure operations. In this thesis, a content analysis of the published literature is conducted to determine if established security and cryptographic standards and best practices are addressed in real world, practical QKD implementations. The research reveals that most published, real world QKD implementations do not take advantage of established security and cryptographic standards and best practices. Based upon an analysis of existing security and cryptographic standards and best practices, systems architecture methodology is used to make recommendations as to how these standards can and should be applied to establish a practical, secure, QKD system framework.
