Abstract

This chapter discusses the transformative potential of quantum computing in the forecasting of weather and modeling of climate—two very critical fields for understanding and addressing climate change. Quantum computing brings unique computational advantages that will improve the accuracy of predictions, increase knowledge about climate systems, and informed decision-making. The chapter first discusses the importance of these fields and introduces quantum computing and its many applications. It then outlines the current methods used in weather forecasting and climate modeling, highlighting the limitations of traditional computational approaches. Key quantum computing concepts, such as qubits, superposition, and entanglement, are discussed alongside quantum algorithms and architectures. This chapter addresses how quantum computing could bring numerical weather prediction models to a new level, allowing for faster, more accurate weather forecasting through quantum simulation, and using quantum machine learning in analyzing weather patterns. It also gives quantum-inspired algorithms for climate modeling and optimization problems related to 174processing large climatic datasets. While highlighting the promise of quantum computing in revolutionizing these domains, the chapter also discusses its limitations: technical, ethical, and societal. It, therefore, calls for collaboration and responsible deployment in order to reap the full potential of quantum computing to improve the accuracy of predictions, understand climate dynamics, and reduce the impacts of climate change.

Quantum Artificial Intelligence for the Science of Climate Change

Manmeet Singh, Chirag Dhara, Adarsh Kumar +2 more

Climate change has become one of the biggest global problems increasingly compromising the Earth's habitability. Recent developments such as the extraordinary heat waves in California & Canada, and the devastating floods in Germany point to the role of climate change in the ever-increasing frequency of extreme weather. Numerical modelling of the weather and climate have seen tremendous improvements in the last five decades, yet stringent limitations remain to be overcome. Spatially and temporally localized forecasting is the need of the hour for effective adaptation measures towards minimizing the loss of life and property. Artificial Intelligence-based methods are demonstrating promising results in improving predictions, but are still limited by the availability of requisite hardware and software required to process the vast deluge of data at a scale of the planet Earth. Quantum computing is an emerging paradigm that has found potential applicability in several fields. In this opinion piece, we argue that new developments in Artificial Intelligence algorithms designed for quantum computers - also known as Quantum Artificial Intelligence (QAI) - may provide the key breakthroughs necessary to furthering the science of climate change. The resultant improvements in weather and climate forecasts are expected to cascade to numerous societal benefits.

Sandhya K. Yerra, Vivek Pandey, Sunita D. Singh +3 more

Climate prediction plays a crucial role in understanding and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Traditional climate models, though powerful, often face challenges in handling the vast, high-dimensional satellite imagery data required for accurate forecasting. Meanwhile, quantum computing offers new computational paradigms capable of addressing complex problems intractable for classical systems. In this research, we propose an innovative framework for an image-based climate prediction model leveraging quantum computing technology. By integrating quantum machine learning algorithms with satellite Earth observation data, the model aims to extract critical climatic patterns such as temperature anomalies, cloud movements, and vegetation dynamics with enhanced precision and computational efficiency. The study addresses existing limitations by developing specialized quantum algorithms for image processing, exploring quantum-classical hybrid architectures, and optimizing the system for real-world scalability using current and near-term quantum devices. Preliminary results suggest that quantum approaches have the potential to outperform traditional techniques in processing speed and predictive accuracy, particularly for high-resolution, time-series satellite imagery. This work represents a significant step toward practical, quantum-enhanced climate modeling, bridging the gap between quantum computing advancements and urgent global climate forecasting needs.

Quantum-Enhanced Models for Predicting Atmospheric Dynamics in Weather Forecasting

Bakialakshmi Varadaradjaperoumal Bhuvana, Mathan S

Weather forecasting plays a critical role across various sectors, supporting strategic planning and reducing the impact of hazardous climatic conditions. However, the inherently chaotic and nonlinear nature of atmospheric systems limits the performance of conventional forecasting approaches, often resulting in prediction inaccuracies and heightened risk. This study proposes a quantum-driven predictive framework that exploits the computational strengths of Quantum Machine Learning (QML) and hybrid quantum–classical optimization to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of modern forecasting models. The framework employs Quantum Neural Networks (QNNs) combined with Variational Quantum Circuits (VQCs) to learn complex spatial–temporal dynamics embedded within large meteorological datasets. Through quantum feature encoding, key atmospheric indicators—including temperature, humidity, wind velocity, and barometric pressure—are projected into high-dimensional Hilbert spaces, enabling more expressive pattern extraction and robust predictive behavior. Simulation results reveal that the quantum-augmented approach surpasses traditional deep learning architectures in both training convergence and forecast precision when applied to extensive weather records. The hybrid design further supports scalability by intelligently distributing computational workloads between classical processors and quantum hardware. Overall, this research demonstrates the transformative potential of quantum computing in atmospheric modeling, offering a foundation for future real-time forecasting systems capable of managing the increasing complexity of global climate patterns.
