QUARK: A Framework for Quantum Computing Application Benchmarking

Jernej Rudi Finžgar, Philipp Ross, Leonhard Hölscher +2 more

Quantum computing (QC) is anticipated to provide a speedup over classical HPC approaches for specific problems in optimization, simulation, and machine learning. With the advances in quantum computing toward practical applications, the need to analyze and compare different quantum solutions increases. While different low-level benchmarks for QC exist, these benchmarks do not provide sufficient insights into real-world application-level performance. We propose an application-centric benchmark method and the QUantum computing Application benchmaRK (QUARK) framework to foster the investigation and creation of application benchmarks for QC. This paper establishes three significant contributions: (1) it makes a case for application-level benchmarks and provides an in-depth "pen and paper" benchmark formulation of two reference problems: robot path and vehicle option optimization from the industrial domain; (2) it proposes the open-source QUARK framework for designing, implementing, executing, and analyzing benchmarks; (3) it provides multiple reference implementations for these two reference problems based on different known, and where needed, extended, classical and quantum algorithmic approaches and analyzes their performance on different types of infrastructures.

Chapter 9 Quantum computing: future of artificial intelligence and its applications

N. Pooranam, D. Surendran, N. Karthikeyan +1 more

Quantum computing (QC) is the emerging technology for solving complex problems through the laws of quantum mechanism and optimized algorithms. To examine the possibilities of active cooperation across both disciplines of computer science, this article explains the core components of quantum computing and conveys some of the important features linked by quantum computing and Artificial Intelligence (AI). To make major progress with artificial intelligence, quantum computing is probably necessary. Quantum computing’s training and processing power can be used to improve AI and machine learning (ML) algorithms at a reduced cost. AI can provide quantum computers with crucial error-correcting algorithms. Several AI algorithms have been successfully applied to quantum computers; they are constrained by the computational power of conventional computers despite developing useful applications. Artificial intelligence may benefit from quantum computing’s computational boost in order to handle more challenging issues. This case study explains the importance of quantum computing, the future of QC in AI, and the different applications of quantum computing, such as AI and ML, cybersecurity and cryptography, and weather forecasting.

Quantum Computing and Simulations for Energy Applications

Hari P. Paudel, Yueh‐Lin Lee, Scott Crawford +4 more

While quantum computing (QC) is considered as a paradigm shift in our basic understanding of physical computation, effective implementation of QC in energy applications also depends on progress and development in the dimensions of both QC hardware and algorithms. To fully address the status and future challenges of QC applied within the energy sector, in this presentation, we firstly summarize recent advancements on the applications of QC to energy infrastructure and materials, complex energy system processes, advanced manufacturing, and energy system security. Then, we will demonstrate the results of QC performed both on a simulator and a quantum device targeting on energy-related applications.
