Abstract

Quantum computing is a new discipline that uses the ideas of quantum physics to do calculations that are not possible with conventional computers. Quantum bits, called qubits, could exist in superposition states, making them suitable for parallel processing in contrast to traditional bits. When it comes to addressing complex challenges like proof simulation, optimization, and cryptography, quantum entanglement and quantum interference provide exponential improvements. This survey focuses on recent advances in entanglement routing, quantum key distribution (QKD), and qubit management for short- and long-distance quantum communication. It studies optimization approaches such as integer programming, reinforcement learning, and collaborative methods, evaluating their efficacy in terms of throughput, scalability, and fairness. Despite improvements, challenges remain in dynamic network adaptation, resource limits, and error correction. Addressing these difficulties necessitates the creation of hybrid quantum–classical algorithms for efficient resource allocation, hardware-aware designs to improve real-world deployment, and fault-tolerant architecture. Therefore, this survey suggests that future research focus on integrating quantum networks with existing classical infrastructure to improve security, dependability, and mainstream acceptance. This connection has significance for applications that require secure communication, financial transactions, and critical infrastructure protection.

Adaptive Entanglement Routing with Deep Q-Networks in Quantum Networks

Lamarana Jallow, Majid Iqbal Khan

The quantum internet holds transformative potential for global communication by harnessing the principles of quantum information processing. Despite significant advancements in quantum communication technologies, the efficient distribution of critical resources, such as qubits, remains a persistent and unresolved challenge. Conventional approaches often fall short of achieving optimal resource allocation, underscoring the necessity for more effective solutions. This study proposes a novel reinforcement learning-based adaptive entanglement routing framework designed to enable resource allocation tailored to the specific demands of quantum applications. The introduced QuDQN model utilizes reinforcement learning to optimize the management of quantum networks, allocate resources efficiently, and enhance entanglement routing. The model integrates key considerations, including fidelity requirements, network topology, qubit capacity, and request demands.

Quantum Networking: Current Advances and Future Directions in Secure Communication

Nikitha Nikitha Nikitha, A. Maria Franclin Monisha, Pradeep Nayak +2 more

Abstract - Quantum networking represents one of the most transformative developments in modern secure communication. Unlike classical networks that rely on mathematical encryption, quantum networks exploit the physical properties of qubits—superposition, entanglement, and the no-cloning theorem—to establish communication channels that are inherently tamper-evident. As quantum technologies mature, applications such as quantum key distribution (QKD), quantum repeaters, quantum teleportation, quantum memory systems, and quantum internet protocols are gaining global traction. This paper consolidates current progress in quantum networking technologies and provides an extended discussion of recent advancements in protocols, hardware components, integrated photonic systems, and machine-learning-enhanced architectures. Additionally, results synthesized from established literature, illustrate performance trends, security gains, and practical deployment challenges in quantum communication networks. The paper also outlines future directions toward scalable quantum internets, hybrid quantum-classical infrastructures, error-corrected qubit networks, satellite-based QKD, and intelligent routing systems. Overall, quantum networking is positioned to redefine the future of secure data transfer, distributed computing, and global communication infrastructures. Quantum Network Optimization: From Optimal Routing to Fair Resource Allocation

Zhaozhen Wang, Xingang Shi, Zhengfeng Ji +1 more

Quantum networks are essential infrastructure for enabling large-scale and long-distance quantum communications but face significant challenges in routing optimization and resource allocation due to their probabilistic nature and quantum resource limitations. Existing approaches typically tackle these problems in isolation, often by simply applying classical routing algorithms, maximizing the overall profit to allocate resources without considering fairness, or improving fairness in an ad-hoc way without a rigorous model. This paper proposes a general framework to systematically address these challenges. First, we conduct a thorough analysis of quantum network metrics using routing algebra as the mathematical foundation, and design provably optimal routing algorithms to tackle the unique challenges arising from their probabilistic characteristics. Second, we formulate an optimization model that simultaneously considers fairness among concurrent requests while respecting various quantum resource constraints, and design efficient near-optimal heuristics to solve it. The proposed framework provides both theoretical insights and practical solutions for the design and management of future quantum networks.
