High-Dimensional Quantum Communication Using Space Encoding

Quantum communication (QC) represents a key enabler for many quantum applications. However, low information rates and short propagation distances, limit the development of this field and its practical applications. High-dimensional (Hi-D) QC can address these challenges enhancing the information rate and the systems error tolerance. We report our recent results on Hi-D quantum communication where we prove the capability of preparing, manipulating, transmitting and measuring Hi-D quantum states through multi-core and multimode fiber.

Novel avenues for robust free-space quantum communications

Thomas D. Jennewein

Quantum information processing and quantum communication are novel protocols that originate from the very fundamental and philosophical questions on superposition and entanglement raised since the early days of quantum mechanics. Strikingly, these new protocols offer capabilities beyond communication task possible with classical physics. One very important example is the secure key exchange based on the transmission of individual quantum signals between communication partners. The big vision and frontier in the field of quantum communication research is the development of a Quantum Internet, which establishes entanglement between many different users and devices. Extending today’s internet, the Quantum Internet will readily transfer quantum bits, rather than classical bits, between users near and far and over multiple different channels and could be used for secure communications, quantum computer networks and metrological applications. I will discuss recent advances on implementations and tools useful for generating and distributing photonic quantum entanglement over robust channels including. Time-bin encoding and reference-frame-free protocols. I will also present an overview of the upcoming Canadian quantum communication satellite QEYSSAT.

Fiber-based high-dimensional quantum communications

Davide Bacco, Beatrice Da Lio, Daniele Cozzolino +4 more

Quantum communication, i.e., the ability to transport a quantum state from one place to another, represents a crucial task for many quantum applications, i.e. quantum cryptography, quantum secret sharing and quantum networks. However current systems present main limitations in terms of low information rates, short propagation distances and low compatibility with today classical optical infrastructure. These restrictions bound the development of this field and its practical applications. High-dimensional quantum communication can help in overcoming these challenges enhancing the information rate and the system error tolerance. We here report our recent results on high-dimensional fiber based quantum communication, both with multicore and multimode fibers, in which we prove the capability of preparing, manipulating, transmitting and measuring advanced quantum states with excellent fidelities. Our results pave the way towards high-dimensional quantum communication in an optical fiber infrastructure.

Implementation of space-division multiplexed entanglement-based quantum cryptography over multicore fiber

Evelyn A. Ortega, Jorge Fuenzalida, Krishna Dovzhik +6 more

Quantum key distribution has shown promising advances in information transmission security. In particular, quantum communication schemes based on entanglement have enormous potential to enhance the security and efficiency of information transmission. Therefore, today’s efforts address overcoming issues related to high data transmission and long-distance implementations to enable real-world quantum communication applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a multiplexing technique to enhance the secret key rate by exploiting the momentum correlation of photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric downconversion. We distributed polarization-entangled photon pairs into opposite cores within a 19-core multicore fiber. We estimated the secret key rates in a configuration with 6 and 12 cores from the entanglement visibility after transmission through a 411-m-long multicore fiber. Our results can lead to the transmission of more information per photon and the establishment of novel quantum networks with one common communication channel, which opens the possibility of deploying new quantum channels over longer distances.
