NOTEBOOK: The Wave Favouritism Theory of Spacetime (WF-S): A Unified Framework for Quantum Measurement, Entropy, and Cosmic Structure

Abstract

This paper presents The Wave Favouritism Theory of Spacetime (WF–S), Part I, a foundations-level framework addressing the quantum measurement problem. WF–S targets the selection gap left open by decoherence and Quantum Darwinism: while these approaches explain the suppression of interference and the emergence of robust pointer states, they do not provide a dynamical account of why one particular outcome becomes the stable macroscopic record in a given experimental run. WF–S proposes a minimal, testable mechanism in which quantum measurement is treated as a finite-time physical process of irreversible record formation in open systems. The framework introduces a real scalar substrate field that couples locally to the standard complex quantum amplitude field through a minimal interaction term. The closed-system dynamics of the combined fields are unitary and generated by a Hermitian Lagrangian. Apparent randomness and irreversibility arise only at the effective level, after coarse-graining and tracing over uncontrolled environmental and substrate degrees of freedom. In measurement regimes, alternative outcomes may differ in the degree to which they irreversibly imprint information into unobserved degrees of freedom. WF–S proposes that these differences enter the effective description through a dimensionless entropy-based proxy, leading to entropy-conditioned outcome weights. When the operational record-bias is uniform across competing alternatives, the framework reduces exactly to the standard Born rule. In this sense, the Born rule emerges as the entropy-uniform limit of a more general record-formation mechanism. The paper is deliberately conservative in scope. Its primary contributions are: (i) a minimal two-field Lagrangian consistent with locality, Lorentz invariance, and boundedness; (ii) a clear separation between closed-system unitary dynamics and effective open-system irreversibility; and (iii) a falsifiable measurement-sector prediction, formulated as swap-protected, sign-definite deviations from Born statistics under engineered record-asymmetry. A conservative falsification ladder and experimental protocols are presented, with emphasis on near-term testability using existing quantum platforms. This work is intended as a foundations framework rather than a completed theory of all interactions. Extensions to complex substrates, matter structure, forces, and cosmology are outlined at a programme level and deferred to subsequent papers. If WF–S is incorrect, it is designed to fail cleanly through explicit measurement-sector tests; if it survives, it offers a concrete dynamical route toward understanding how quantum possibilities become stable physical records.

NOTEBOOK: The Wave Favouritism Theory of Spacetime (WF-S): A Unified Framework for Quantum Measurement, Entropy, and Cosmic Structure

Thurston, Mark Jason

What physically happens when we measure a quantum system? Standard quantum mechanics provides no answer—the Born rule $P_i = |\psi_i|^2$ is postulated, and measurement remains outside the theory's equations. The \textbf{Wave Favouritism Theory of Spacetime (WF-S)} proposes that measurement outcomes are \emph{deterministically selected} through entropy-driven amplitude dynamics. A local entropy field $S_\star(x)$ evolves according to physical law and determines which quantum configuration stabilizes via entropy-action minimization. Observed probabilities \[P_i = \frac{|a_i|^2 e^{-S_\star^{(i)}/k_B}}{\sum_j |a_j|^2 e^{-S_\star^{(j)}/k_B}}\]reflect our incomplete knowledge of $S_\star$, not fundamental randomness—resolving Einstein's objection that quantum mechanics offers probabilities ``by decree'' rather than from physical mechanism. WF-S establishes this deterministic foundation through three interconnected results: Result 1: Covariant influence Lagrangian. We derive a covariant influence action from five minimal axioms that reproduces Standard Model + General Relativity \emph{exactly} when entropy is spatially uniform. The Born rule emerges structurally from entropy-weighted geometry—not postulated but required by the field equations. Time's arrow follows from the T-odd entropy-phase coupling: $\ln(\Gamma_f/\Gamma_b) = -\Delta S_\star/k_B$ with zero adjustable parameters. All predictions depend on a single universal coupling $\eta = e^{-3} \approx 0.05$, testable across multiple systems. Result 2: Emergent structure from lattice geometry.Forces, matter, and fundamental constants emerge as different projections of the same deterministic entropy-field dynamics when the WF-S Lagrangian is coarse-grained onto a $3\times3\times3$ lattice organizing all gauge sectors. Forces arise as bilinear couplings of amplitude, phase, and entropy gradients; matter appears as stable ripple domains on lattice edges (fermions) and faces (bosons); constants are geometric projections of a universal envelope with ratios determined by lattice topology alone. The hierarchy problem ($\alpha_G/\alpha \sim 10^{-37}$) follows from dimensional suppression without fine-tuning. This framework extends to cosmological dynamics, connecting early-universe entropy evolution to late-time acceleration. Result 3: Falsifiable signatures distinguishing deterministic from ontological randomness.Unlike ontologically random theories, WF-S predicts reproducible, parameter-dependent biases in quantum measurements that track measured entropy gradients—impossible for fundamentally random systems. Near-term experiments (18--30 months) target: (i) quantum random number generators showing systematic bias $\sim\eta$ correlated with entropy gradients, (ii) interferometric visibility depending on $\Delta S_\star$, (iii) asymmetric transition rates $\ln(\Gamma_f/\Gamma_b) = -\Delta S_\star/k_B$ in two-level systems, and (iv) cross-sector constant ratio consistency. All predictions collapse to standard physics when entropy is uniform, providing direct falsification tests of the deterministic mechanism. WF-S offers the first testable resolution to quantum measurement from deterministic field dynamics—preserving Einstein's determinism without hidden variables, wavefunction collapse, or many worlds.

WFS Paper 1: The Born Rule as the Entropy-Uniform Limit of Record Formation: A Falsifiable Measurement Framework

Mark Jason Thurston

The Born rule sits at the heart of quantum mechanics as an unexamined assumption: probabilities are fundamental. For a statistician, that is uncomfortable. Probabilities are tools for describing ignorance — so what, precisely, are we ignorant of? That question leads to a deeper one: what is measurement, really? If measurement is a physical event, something in the world must change when it happens — something records it. WF-S formalises this with two physical inputs and one Lagrangian. Postulate 1 (WF-S kernel): a complex amplitude field φ(x) couples to a real substrate field s(x) via L = Lφ + Ls − g|φ|²s. Postulate 2 (record condition): macroscopic outcomes are weighted by cumulative entropy export σi = ΔSenv,i/kB during record formation. The substrate carries the irreversible imprint of that record. The Schrödinger equation and the Born rule are not independent postulates: they are the same Lagrangian in two regimes, separated by the physical threshold of record formation. The Born rule emerges as the entropy-uniform limit of a more general selection rule — derivable, not assumed. The entropy increments σi are thermodynamic quantities, defined through physical irreversibility independently of any probability assignment. The arrow runs: physical event → thermodynamic σi → outcome weighting → Born rule. The framework makes falsifiable predictions. For two outcome channels, the log-odds shift is ln(P1/P2) = ln(|a1|²/|a2|²) + Δσeff, where Δσeff ≈ εη Δσeng, Δσeng is an independently calibrated entropy contrast and εη is an experimentally bounded suppression factor. Swap-symmetry of the tilt (F1), linear response in engineered entropy contrast (F2), universality of the coarse-graining parameter across platforms (F3), and exact Born recovery in the entropy-uniform limit (F4-F5) are testable on existing platforms independently of the numerical value of εη.This paper is the first in a five-paper series; the substrate framework developed here is extended to forces, gravity, cosmology, and a full information-geometric synthesis in Papers II–V."

WFS Causal Chain: Logical Roadmap and Audit Trail for the Five-Paper Programme.

Mark Jason Thurston

WF-S Causal Chain: Logical Roadmap and Audit Trail for the Five-Paper Programme. This document serves as the navigation index for the Wave Favouritism-Substrate (WF-S) programme. It maps the complete logical spine from the founding question — what physically is a measurement? — through to the numerical predictions of particle physics, with every step carrying an explicit epistemic label ([Derived]/[Conditional]/[Open]). The Causal Chain allows a reader to trace any result back to its foundations across the five papers: Paper I: The Born Rule as the Entropy-Uniform Limit of Record Formation — DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19148893 Paper II: Force Mediation, Mass Generation, and Generation Structure from the LTrion Portal — DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19511248 Paper III: Emergent Einstein Gravity from LTrion Record Statistics — DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19511361 Paper IV: Cosmogenesis, Dark Matter, and Vacuum Energy from the Fisher Manifold — DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19511486 Paper V: The Statistical Manifold of Irreversible Records — DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19511630 As of v16 (April 2026), the logical spine is complete within stated regimes: every step from the founding question to the CCR, Born rule, Schrödinger equation, Einstein equations, Koide relation, and derivation of ε is [Derived] with no conditional steps remaining in the main chain. Remaining open problems — the lepton phase angle and full nonlinear Einstein equations — are extensions of derived results, not gaps. Kill conditions and falsifiable predictions are listed explicitly, with the Belle II tau mass measurement (mτ to < 0.01 MeV precision) as the primary empirical test. The central claim of the programme is that probability is not fundamental but emergent — that the Born rule is not an axiom but a consequence of what it physically means to form an irreversible record. This programme began with a single question: "what is measurement, really?". What follows is a personal learning journey — an attempt to look at the paradoxes physics has accumulated over the last century through a different lens. The mathematics is offered in good faith. The errors are the author's own, and remain his best opportunities to learn.

WFS Paper 5: The Statistical Manifold of Irreversible Records: Quantum Mechanics, Spacetime, and Forces as Geometry of a Record-Bearing Substrate

Mark Jason Thurston

WF-S Paper V: The Statistical Manifold of Irreversible Records — Quantum Mechanics, Spacetime, and Forces as Geometry of a Record-Bearing Substrate. This paper reformulates the entire WF-S programme in its natural mathematical language: the information geometry of statistical manifolds. Without assuming a Lagrangian, spacetime, or field content, quantum mechanics, Einstein gravity, three fermion generations, the Koide relation, and the LTrion Lagrangian are derived from three conditions on a record-capable substrate (distinguishability, permanence, repeatability) and the Fisher-Rao metric. Key results include: Born rule from entropy-uniform geodesics; canonical commutation relation [x̂,p̂]=iℏ derived via CLT and coherent state overlap without geometric quantisation; trilinear coupling μ = ms/s₀ from Berry curvature; instanton prefactor ε = e⁻⁴(1−e⁻⁴)³ = 0.017327 within 0.035% of the measured value; cosmological constant sign resolved; and the Planck length derived simultaneously from three independent internal routes. The mathematical constant e appears twice in the programme — as the base of the Gaussian distribution arising from the Central Limit Theorem applied to irreversible record formation, and as the base of the complex phase rotation in the Z3 ground state; both are shown to be the same exponential map on the Fisher manifold, unifying the thermodynamic and geometric faces of the theory. The logical spine of WFS is complete within stated regimes. Remaining open problems — the lepton phase angle and full nonlinear Einstein equations — are extensions of derived results, not gaps.

Quantum Measurement as Irreversible Interaction Events

Shinichiro Honda

The quantum measurement problem arises from a structural asymmetry in standard formulations of quantum mechanics: while unitary evolution is treated as fundamental, irreversible events are introduced only through ad hoc postulates. As a result, measurement, decoherence, and probability appear conceptually disconnected. In this work, we propose a minimal reformulation in which irreversible interaction events are taken as ontological primitives. An event is defined as a completely positive, trace-preserving map that is not equivalent to any unitary transformation. Unitary evolution emerges as an effective description valid between events. Within this framework, quantum measurement is not a special process but a particular class of irreversible events with outcome-resolving structure. The Born rule arises naturally from the statistical structure of event realizations, and environmental decoherence is reinterpreted as a high density of irreversible events. No collapse postulate, observer-dependent rule, or modification of quantum dynamics is required. This formulation provides a unified and physically grounded resolution of the measurement problem and establishes a conceptual foundation for event-based extensions connecting quantum theory with spacetime and gravity.
