Evidence for crossover from a Bose-Einstein condensate to a BCS-like superconductor with doping in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 − δ from quasiparticle relaxation dynamics experiments

Jure Demsar, Boštjan Podobnik, Jan E. Evetts +2 more

Time-resolved measurements of quasiparticle (QP) relaxation dynamics on the femtosecond timescale are reported as a function of temperature and doping in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 − δ for (0.48 < δ < 0.1). In the underdoped state (δ > 0.15), there is no evidence for any changes in the low-energy gap structure at T c from either photoinduced QP absorption or QP relaxation time data. In combination with the sum rule, this implies the existence of pre-formed pairs up to a much higher temperature T *. Near δ = 0.1 a rapid cross-over is observed, to a state where the QP recombination time diverges and the photoinduced QP density falls to zero at T c , indicating the existence of a temperature-dependent superconducting gap which closes at T c .

Theory of two-dimensional macroscopic quantum tunneling in YBa2Cu3O7−δ Josephson junctions coupled to an LC circuit

Shiro Kawabata, Thilo Bauch, Takeo Kato

We investigate classical thermal activation (TA) and macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) for a ${\text{YBa}}_{2}{\text{Cu}}_{3}{\text{O}}_{7\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\delta}}$ (YBCO) Josephson junction coupled to an LC circuit theoretically. Due to the coupling between the junction and the LC circuit, the macroscopic phase dynamics can be described as the escape process of a fictitious particle with an anisotropic mass moving in a two-dimensional potential. We analytically calculate the escape rate including both the TA and MQT regime by taking into account the peculiar dynamical nature of the system. In addtion to large suppression of the MQT rate at zero temperature, we study details of the temperature dependence of the escape rate across a crossover region. These results are in an excellent agreement with recent experimental data for the MQT and TA rate in a YBCO biepitaxial Josephson junction. Therefore the coupling to the LC circuit is essential in understanding the macroscopic quantum dynamics and the qubit operation based on the YBCO biepitaxial Josephson junctions.

YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ nano-constriction Josephson junctions and SQUIDs fabricated by focused helium-ion-beam irradiation

Christoph Schmid, Christopher Buckreus, David Haas +9 more

By focused $30\,\mathrm{keV}$ He ion beam irradiation, epitaxially grown YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) thin films can be driven from the superconducting to the insulating state with increasing irradiation dose. A properly chosen dose suppresses superconductivity down to $4\,\mathrm{K}$, while crystallinity is still preserved. With this approach we create areas of normal-conducting YBCO that can be used to define resistively shunted constriction-type Josephson junctions (cJJs) on the nanometer scale. We also demonstrate that the fabricated cJJs can be incorporated in direct current superconducting quantum interference devices and can be used as detector junctions in THz antennas.
