Emergent Physical Time and the Dynamical Origin of the Born Rule

Abstract

Description This work develops a foundational reformulation of quantum measurement by treating physical time as an emergent, dynamically produced quantity rather than as an external background parameter. Within the Discrete Expansion and Emergent Time (DEET) framework, physical duration is generated by the spacetime gradient of a scalar phase field, \Theta(x), with the local time flow defined by u_\mu = \nabla_\mu \Theta. Once time is produced rather than assumed, the weighting of mutually exclusive quantum outcomes requires a new structural interpretation. The paper introduces a time-production (allocation) density \rho(\psi), defined as a bookkeeping quantity for realized physical time rather than a probability postulate. By imposing only minimal and physically unavoidable requirements—global phase invariance, locality, separability under independent composition, and additivity under coarse-graining over exclusive alternatives—it is shown that this density is uniquely fixed (up to normalization) as \rho(\psi) \propto |\psi|^2. Measurement is modeled dynamically as a phase–gradient locking process, in which interaction with a macroscopic record sector enforces a shared realized time flow. Total time production is conserved during measurement, but redistributed across exclusive record sectors. Defining outcome weights as ratios of allocated time production yields the Born rule uniquely, without introducing stochastic collapse postulates, subjective probability, or additional interpretive assumptions. In this framework, state reduction corresponds to dynamical stabilization of a single record-compatible time flow rather than non-unitary projection, and apparent randomness arises from coarse-graining over inaccessible microscopic phase configurations. The work clarifies the structural origin of the Born rule, unifies time-dependent and timeless regimes of quantum theory, and identifies conservative falsifiability targets, including finite-time locking dynamics and correlated phase/timing residuals during measurement.

Quantum Dynamics and Measurement from Stability and Renormalization in a Timeless Framework v1

Sudhakar Rajnikant

We develop a derivation of dynamics of Quantum Mechanics and measurement within a fundamentally timeless and scale-invariant framework. Building on a prior reconstruction of quantum kinematics from renormalization consistency, we extend the analysis to dynamical evolution and the measurement process using three minimal principles: a global constraint (timelessness), a variational formulation, and resolution independence. We show that relational time emerges through conditional decomposition of the global state, leading to an effective Schrödinger evolution under suitable conditions on clock subsystems. Renormalization group (RG) transformations, treated as maps on the state space induced by coarse-graining, generate an effective non-unitary dynamics for reduced states. Under standard assumptions of weak coupling and scale separation, this dynamics takes Lindblad form, providing a structural origin for decoherence. A central result of this work is the formulation of a stability selection principle: configurations contributing to observable physics correspond to those that are simultaneously stationary under the action and stable under RG flow. This principle unifies dynamical selection (via the variational structure) and structural selection (via renormalization), and provides a mechanism for the emergence of classical behavior. Measurement is described as an effective sector dynamics arising from decoherence and coarse-grained evolution. The Lindblad equation admits a stochastic representation in which the system evolves between dynamically independent sectors, leading to an effective description of definite outcomes without introducing a fundamental collapse postulate. The Born rule follows from the unique quadratic measure consistent with refinement structure and is realized dynamically within this framework. Together, these results provide a structural account under minimal assumptions of quantum dynamics, decoherence, and measurement as emergent features of a timeless, renormalization-consistent theory governed by stability across scales.

Measurement and the Born Rule from Temporal Sampling in the Scalar Temporal Field Ontology

Cale Scott Howe

This work provides an ontological and operational grounding of the Born rule within the Scalar Temporal Field Ontology (STFO), in which time is represented as a monotonic scalar field τ(x). Measurement is modeled as an irreversible process of environmentally-induced temporal stabilization of macroscopic records. Probabilities are defined as τ-sampling weights over stabilized record sectors under repeated trials. It is shown that the disjointness and objective identity of stabilized records compel the standard probability axioms on quantum events, including normalization, additivity over exclusive outcomes, and noncontextuality. Established Gleason- and Busch-type representation theorems then uniquely yield the trace rule p(P)=Tr(ρP), and hence the Born rule for pure states. The paper does not modify quantum mechanics or its empirical predictions. Instead, it supplies a physical justification for the probability axioms traditionally assumed in quantum theory by grounding them in temporal stabilization along τ. The Born rule is thereby reinterpreted as the unique τ-consistent sampling measure on stabilized quantum events rather than an independent postulate.

Emergent Origin of the Born Rule from Pre-Locking Structural Robustness in Continuous Quantum Measurement

Luka Gluvić

This work presents an operational and falsifiable mechanism by which Born statistics emerge dynamically from continuous quantum measurement, without assuming wavefunction collapse or probabilistic postulates. Instead of treating the Born rule as a fundamental axiom, outcome probabilities are shown to arise from the pre-locking dynamical structure of measurement trajectories. Using stochastic quantum trajectory simulations of continuously monitored qubit systems, the study introduces the concept of a locking time, defined as the moment at which measurement dynamics irreversibly stabilizes into a definite outcome. Crucially, this locking transition is preceded by a finite pre-locking regime in which multiple outcome configurations coexist and compete dynamically. To quantify this competition, a structural robustness functional is defined as the time-integrated stability of each outcome configuration prior to locking. Normalized robustness values provide a dynamical prediction for final measurement outcomes using only pre-locking information. These predictions exhibit statistically significant correlation with observed outcomes before locking occurs, while the same construction applied after locking shows no predictive power, providing a falsifiable internal control. The mechanism is demonstrated to be robust across wide ranges of measurement strength and decoherence parameters and is shown to be independent of the measurement basis, reproducing the same behavior for measurements performed in both σz and σx bases. No fine tuning or hidden-variable assumptions are required. These results support a reinterpretation of the Born rule as an emergent statistical consequence of measurement dynamics, rather than a fundamental principle. Probabilities arise from accumulated dynamical stability during the measurement process itself, shifting the role of probability in quantum mechanics from an axiom to an operational outcome of pre-locking structural competition.

Discrete Dynamics as the Origin of Spacetime, Quantum Probability, and Friction and Emergent Rules Beyond the Born Rule

Borz, Vanni

This framework preserves the empirical success of existing physical theories while proposing an alternative set of foundational assumptions from which their standard formulations emerge as effective limits. Abstract — Key Innovative Points Discrete Updating FabricThe theory postulates a fundamental discrete fabric whose elementary constituents evolve through local update processes, replacing continuous fields and background spacetime as primary entities. Irreversible Local Dynamics as FundamentalUnlike standard approaches based on unitary or reversible evolution, irreversibility is taken as ontological. Physical law emerges from irreversible local updates rather than from imposed symmetries or variational principles. Emergent Time and SpacetimeTime is not assumed as a fundamental parameter but arises from the counting of update events. Spacetime geometry emerges as a coarse-grained description of update activity across the fabric. Quantum Probability from Microstate CountingQuantum probabilities, including the Born rule, emerge from combinatorial counting of compatible microstates of the fabric, rather than being postulated axiomatically. Gravity as Update-Rate ModulationGravitational phenomena are interpreted as variations in local update rates, leading to effective curvature, time dilation, and relativistic behavior at macroscopic scales. Mass as Resistance to UpdateMass and inertia arise from stable topological structures within the fabric that resist updates, providing a dynamical origin of mass without introducing fundamental mass parameters. Fundamental Dissipation and IrreversibilityDissipation is intrinsic to the fabric dynamics and not an emergent statistical effect. The arrow of time follows directly from the irreversible nature of local updates. Extension Beyond Fundamental PhysicsThe same discrete framework accounts for macroscopic dissipative phenomena—such as friction, stick–slip dynamics, superlubricity, growth, and self-organization—linking fundamental physics and material behavior within a single process-based model. iversality Without Fundamental SymmetryLarge-scale physical laws emerge as dynamical attractors of the updating fabric, arising through elimination of unstable configurations rather than enforcement of fundamental symmetries. Emergent Rules Beyond the Born Rule in the Unified Fabric Framework The same discrete-fabric + local-update + coarse-graining structure generates multiple quantum rules without postulation. 1. Schrödinger Dynamics as an Emergent Long-Wavelength Limit Local deterministic updates on a discrete fabric admit spectral modes. In the long-wavelength limit, their evolution converges to a Schrödinger-type equation. No quantum dynamics is postulated.Only update rules and spectral structure are assumed. 2. Superposition from Coarse-Grained Microstate Counting Macroscopic amplitudes arise as sums over compatible microstates.Linearity follows from additive contributions at the amplitude level. Decoherence from Phase Inaccessibility Observers access only coarse-grained variables.Rapidly varying microstate phases average out. Off-diagonal terms are dynamically suppressed.Decoherence emerges without postulation. 6. Collapse is not a new law.It is constraint updating under coarse-graining. 7. The Arrow of Time from Asymmetric State Counting Entropy is defined as the logarithm of compatible microstates.Local updates generically move toward larger compatible sets. The Born Rule from Configurational Stability: A Timeless Derivation

Ilja Schots

The Born rule, assigning probabilities via |ψ|², is traditionally introduced as an independent axiom of quantum mechanics. Despite its empirical success, its foundational origin remains unresolved. In this paper we derive the Born rule as a necessary consequence of configurational stability in a timeless, pre-metric configuration space. Physical states are described by field configurations Φ, weighted by a stability functional S[Φ]. Quantum states ψ arise as representational coordinates encoding relative stability rather than as ontological wave objects. We show that requiring: projective invariance, factorizability for independent subsystems, and classical additivity under phase degradation, uniquely selects the quadratic probability map |ψ|², without assuming Hilbert space structure, Gleason-type theorems, or temporal dynamics. Measurement is identified as a topological transition at a stability threshold Σ*, where the Hessian spectrum becomes marginally stable. This leads to a distinctive, non-analytic “kink” in decoherence behavior. Unlike stochastic collapse models, the framework predicts pure dephasing without energy injection, avoiding existing experimental heating constraints. The theory yields explicit, falsifiable experimental signatures, including structure-dependent decoherence effects in mesoscopic systems, accessible to current matter-wave interferometry and levitated nanosphere experiments. The framework is fully timeless at the fundamental level; laboratory time emerges only as an epistemic ordering parameter. This work is self-contained and does not rely on gravitational, cosmological, or dark-matter assumptions. QM I: Phase Differential Theory and the Emergence of Quantum Mechanics

Graham Fincham, Daniel John Hilton

Phase Differential Theory (PDT) proposes that quantum mechanics emerges as an effective description of a deeper dynamical phase manifold. In this framework, four scalar phase fields define a locked background whose long‑wavelength envelope dynamics reproduce the Schrödinger equation. The Born rule arises as the natural conserved probability density compatible with locality and continuity of phase flow, and measurement is interpreted as phase synchronisation between subsystems rather than wavefunction collapse. This paper develops a controlled derivation of the Schrödinger equation as an envelope approximation, identifies the conserved probability current associated with phase flow, and shows that |ψ|² is the natural density selected by locality, positivity, and conservation. Measurement is modelled as a dynamical locking of relative phase between system and apparatus, yielding discrete outcomes without introducing non‑unitary dynamics at the fundamental level. All results are obtained within a low‑energy, long‑wavelength effective regime. The microscopic equations of motion for the phase manifold are intentionally deferred, as the effective envelope theory presented here is self‑contained and does not require explicit microscopic specification.
