Abstract

In this work, we investigate some applications of quantum information theory motivated by high-energy physics. There is strong evidence suggesting that entanglement is deeply connected with the geometry of spacetime, which leads to surprising applications of quantum information theory in the AdS/CFT correspondence and holography. We start by reviewing the fundamental concepts of the AdS/CFT correspondence which play a key role in bulk-boundary reconstruction, in particular, we explore some features which suggest that one must interpret the encoding of information in the correspondence as a quantum errorcorrecting code. We discuss the fundamentals of error correction, exploring the formalisms of operator algebra and stabilizer codes. Then, we establish the concrete connection between the two main concepts by showing examples of quantum error-correcting codes that serve as a toy model for AdS/CFT. We illustrate how the 3-qutrit code and the HaPPY code can be powerful tools to explore the correspondence analytically and to solve apparent paradoxes. Following recent results, using quantum error correction, that suggest an intrinsic incompatibility of quantum gravity with global symmetries, we explore approximate error-correcting codes and asymmetric codes as a way to better understand the consequences in a quantum resource-theoretic way. Finally, we discuss our original contribution: geometric bounds for approximate quantum error correction. We calculate our bounds for three typical quantum channels that model the lack of exactness in error correction, namely, dephasing, depolarizing, and amplitude damping channels. The implications of our bounds for AdS/CFT are somewhat elusive; nonetheless, we provide a new approach to benchmark approximations in error correction performance, which may be of high interest for AdS/CFT and its corresponding absence of global symmetries.

6.S899 Project Report Tensor Networks, Quantum Error Correction, and AdS/CFT

John C. Napp

In recent years, the high energy physics community has become increasingly interested in entanglement, especially since it seems that, in some sense, spacetime itself may arise from entanglement [1]. Since dealing with entanglement is a strong point of quantum information theory, it’s perhaps not surprising that quantum information is working its way into some work in this area, including work in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, a duality between quantum theories of gravity in d + 1 dimensions and conformal field theories in d dimensions. In this report, I survey at a very schematic level some recent work which lies in the intersection of quantum information theory (broadly speaking) and the AdS/CFT correspondence, especially in relation to tensor network models of holography. For completion, I won’t assume background which wasn’t covered in class, and so I briefly review relevant features of AdS/CFT and tensor networks.

Observation of gravity-like signatures in holographic codes on a quantum computer

Debopriyo Biswas, Gong Cheng, Krishnanand Karthikeyan +12 more

The unification of quantum mechanics and general relativity remains one of the major open problems of theoretical physics. The Anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence provides a valuable theoretical framework for this effort via a holographic duality between a theory of quantum gravity in asymptotically AdS spacetime and a conformal quantum field theory on the lower-dimensional boundary. Here, we implement a toy model of this duality called the HaPPY code, a quantum error-correcting code in the form of a tensor network with hyperbolic entanglement patterns, on a trapped-ion quantum computer. We present the first experimental confirmation of the Faulkner-Lewkowycz-Maldacena formula in this model - a key test of the holographic correspondence. We then enrich it with non-stabilizerness, or magic, and observe entropic precursors expected of emergent gravity. Finally, we present and measure a code construction whose entropic behavior is reminiscent of a highly quantum wormhole. Our experiments illustrate how quantum computers can serve as testbeds for modeling the emergence of spacetime.

Majorana dimers and holographic quantum error-correcting codes

A. Jahn, Marek Gluza, Fernando Pastawski +1 more

Holographic quantum error-correcting codes have been proposed as toy models that describe key aspects of the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence. In this work, we introduce a versatile framework of Majorana dimers capturing the intersection of stabilizer and Gaussian Majorana states. This picture allows for an efficient contraction with a simple diagrammatic interpretation and is amenable to analytical study of holographic quantum error-correcting codes. Equipped with this framework, we revisit the recently proposed hyperbolic pentagon code (HyPeC). Relating its logical code basis to Majorana dimers, we efficiently compute boundary-state properties even for the non-Gaussian case of generic logical input. The dimers characterizing these boundary states coincide with discrete bulk geodesics, leading to a geometric picture from which properties of entanglement, quantum error correction, and bulk/boundary operator mapping immediately follow. We also elaborate upon the emergence of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula from our model, which realizes many of the properties of the recent bit thread proposal. Our work thus elucidates the connection among bulk geometry, entanglement, and quantum error correction in AdS/CFT and lays the foundation for new models of holography.

Holography, cellulations and error correcting codes

Marika Taylor, Woodward, Charles

Quantum error correction codes associated with the hyperbolic plane have been explored extensively in the context of the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence. In this paper we initiate a systematic study of codes associated with holographic geometries in higher dimensions, relating cellulations of the spatial sections of the geometries to stabiliser codes. We construct analogues of the HaPPY code for three-dimensional hyperbolic space (AdS$_4$), using both absolutely maximally entangled (AME) and non-AME codes. These codes are based on uniform regular tessellations of hyperbolic space but we note that AME codes that preserve the discrete symmetry of the polytope of the tessellation do not exist above two dimensions. We also explore different constructions of stabiliser codes for hyperbolic spaces in which the logical information is associated with the boundary and discuss their potential interpretation. We explain how our codes could be applied to interesting classes of holographic dualities based on gravity-scalar theories (such as JT gravity) through toroidal reductions of hyperbolic spaces.

Towards Holography via Quantum Source-Channel Codes

Fernando Pastawski, Jens Eisert, Henrik Wilming

While originally motivated by quantum computation, quantum error correction (QEC) is currently providing valuable insights into many-body quantum physics, such as topological phases of matter. Furthermore, mounting evidence originating from holography research (AdS/CFT) indicates that QEC should also be pertinent for conformal field theories. With this motivation in mind, we introduce quantum source-channel codes, which combine features of lossy compression and approximate quantum error correction, both of which are predicted in holography. Through a recent construction for approximate recovery maps, we derive guarantees on its erasure decoding performance from calculations of an entropic quantity called conditional mutual information. As an example, we consider Gibbs states of the transverse field Ising model at criticality and provide evidence that they exhibit nontrivial protection from local erasure. This gives rise to the first concrete interpretation of a bona fide conformal field theory as a quantum error correcting code. We argue that quantum source-channel codes are of independent interest beyond holography.

Holographic quantum error-correcting codes: toy models for the bulk/boundary correspondence

Fernando Pastawski, Beni Yoshida, Daniel Harlow +1 more

We propose a family of exactly solvable toy models for the AdS/CFT correspondence based on a novel construction of quantum error-correcting codes with a tensor network structure. Our building block is a special type of tensor with maximal entanglement along any bipartition, which gives rise to an isometry from the bulk Hilbert space to the boundary Hilbert space. The entire tensor network is an encoder for a quantum error-correcting code, where the bulk and boundary degrees of freedom may be identified as logical and physical degrees of freedom respectively. These models capture key features of entanglement in the AdS/CFT correspondence; in particular, the Ryu-Takayanagi formula and the negativity of tripartite information are obeyed exactly in many cases. That bulk logical operators can be represented on multiple boundary regions mimics the Rindlerwedge reconstruction of boundary operators from bulk operators, realizing explicitly the quantum error-correcting features of AdS/CFT recently proposed in [1].
