Coherent states of a free particle from the coherent states of the harmonic oscillator

Abstract

We construct the coherent states of a free particle by implementing a coordinate transformation in the extended configuration space, which establishes a correspondence between the solutions of the Schrödinger equation for a harmonic oscillator and those for a free particle. Using this framework, we derive analytical expressions for the coherent states of a free particle, avoiding the complexities of non-normalizable fiducial states, integrals of motion, or group-theoretic approaches. Our method provides a systematic way to characterize these states at any instant while ensuring that they satisfy the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty relation.

Making use of the fact that the solutions of the Schrödinger equation for the harmonic oscillator can be expressed in terms of the solutions of the Schrödinger equation for a free particle, we find the effect on the wavefunctions of the harmonic oscillator produced by the spatial translations and the Galilean transformations on the wavefunctions of a free particle. We find that these symmetry transformations applied to the ground state of the harmonic oscillator produce the coherent states.

Harmonic states for the free particle

J Guerrero, Francisco F. López-Ruiz, V. Aldaya +1 more

Different families of states, which are solutions of the time-dependent free Schrödinger equation, are imported from the harmonic oscillator using the quantum Arnold transformation introduced in Aldaya et al (2011 J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 44 065302). Among them, infinite series of states are given that are normalizable, expand the whole space of solutions, are spatially multi-localized and are eigenstates of a suitably defined number operator. Associated with these states new sets of coherent and squeezed states for the free particle are defined representing traveling, squeezed, multi-localized wave packets. These states are also constructed in higher dimensions, leading to the quantum mechanical version of the Hermite–Gauss and Laguerre–Gauss states of paraxial wave optics. Some applications of these new families of states and procedures to experimentally realize and manipulate them are outlined.

Harmonic oscillator coherent states from the orbit theory standpoint

Alexander Igorevich Breev, Alexander V. Shapovalov

We study the known coherent states of a quantum harmonic oscillator from the standpoint of the original developed noncommutative integration method for linear partial differential equations. The application of the method is based on the symmetry properties of the Schrödinger equation and on the orbit geometry of the coadjoint representation of Lie groups. We have shown that analogs of coherent states constructed by the noncommutative integration can be expressed in terms of the solution of a system of differential equations on the Lie group of the oscillatory Lie algebra. The solutions constructed are directly related to irreducible representation of the Lie algebra on the Hilbert space functions on the Lagrangian submanifold to the orbit of the coadjoint representation.

Coherent and semiclassical states of a free particle

Vladislav G. Bagrov, Dmitri M Gitman, A. S. Pereira

Coherent states (CS) were first introduced and studied in detail for bound motion and discrete-spectrum systems like harmonic oscillators and similar systems with a quadratic Hamiltonian. However, the problem of constructing CS has still not been investigated in detail for the simplest and physically important case of a free particle, for which, besides being physically important, the CS problem is of didactic value in teaching quantum mechanics, with the CS regarded as examples of wave packets representing semiclassical motion. In this paper, we essentially follow the Malkin-Dodonov-Man'ko method to construct the CS of a free nonrelativistic particle. We give a detailed discussion of the properties of the CS obtained, in particular, the completeness relations, the minimization of uncertainty relations, and the evolution of the corresponding probability density. We describe the physical conditions under which free-particle CS can be considered semiclassical states.
