This study explores the dual impact of quantum computing on cybersecurity, focusing on the challenges it poses to existing cryptographic standards and the opportunities it presents for enhancing secure communication. Through a comprehensive review of current literature and analysis of emerging quantum-resistant technologies such as Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC), the research identifies key vulnerabilities in traditional encryption methods and outlines the potential of quantum technologies to revolutionize cybersecurity practices. The study emphasizes the urgent need for the development and standardization of quantum-resistant cryptographic solutions to safeguard digital assets against the computational capabilities of quantum technologies. Policy recommendations are psroposed to accelerate the adoption of quantum-safe standards and to foster collaboration among stakeholders in the cybersecurity ecosystem. Furthermore, the study highlights areas for future research, including the scalability of quantum-resilient solutions and the ethical implications of quantum computing on privacy and security. Conclusively, the findings suggest that a proactive and collaborative approach is essential for navigating the quantum computing era, underscoring the importance of preparing a quantum-resilient cybersecurity infrastructure to ensure the long-term security of digital communications and assets.

From Bytes to Qubits: The Cybersecurity Implications of Quantum Advancements

Afrah Ayub, Sharlene Anna Pereira, Mohammed Amaan Thayyil +1 more

Quantum computing, poised to revolutionize the computational landscape, presents both unprecedented opportunities and significant challenges, particularly in the realm of cryptography. This paper delves into the transformative potential of quantum computing, exploring its foundational principles, such as qubits, superposition, and entanglement, which enable parallel processing far beyond classical capabilities. We examine the critical threats quantum computing poses to current cryptographic systems, especially through algorithms like Shor's and Grover's, which could render widely-used encryption methods obsolete. In response to these threats, we explore the development of post-quantum cryptography, including lattice-based, hash-based, and isogeny-based approaches, as well as the ongoing efforts to standardize these quantum-resistant algorithms. Additionally, we discuss the policy and regulatory considerations essential for guiding the responsible evolution of quantum computing technology. This paper underscores the urgency of advancing quantum-resistant cryptographic techniques and the importance of international collaboration in shaping the future of quantum computing. Keywords— quantum computing, cryptography, post-quantum cryptography, Shor's algorithm, Grover's algorithm, quantum- resistant algorithms, cybersecurity I. INTRODUCTION

Quantum schemes for resilient space cybersecurity

Abebe Abeshu Diro

The convergence of quantum computing and space-based communications presents both significant cybersecurity risks and transformative security opportunities for modern space infrastructure. This chapter examines the impact of quantum technologies on space cybersecurity, focusing on the threats posed to classical cryptographic systems by quantum algorithms such as Shor's and Grover's, alongside emerging solutions including quantum key distribution (QKD), post-quantum cryptography (PQC), and quantum-enhanced sensing. A comparative analysis is presented between classical and quantum threats across different orbital environments. The chapter develops a taxonomy of quantum-security mechanisms tailored for space deployment, considering operational constraints such as radiation exposure, communication latency, and size, weight, and power limitations. It further evaluates implementation barriers and proposes a phased adoption roadmap centered on hybrid architectures and crypto-agile systems. A multi-layered defense framework integrating quantum-resistant protocols and adaptive threat detection is proposed to enhance resilience and future-proof space systems against evolving quantum-era cyber threats and operational challenges.
