Abstract

Side channel attacks pose a security threat to aerospace and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), especially in defense scenarios where ensuring resilience and safeguarding data confidentiality is of utmost importance. These attacks take advantage of information leaks like power usage patterns, electromagnetic emissions, timing fluctuations, and sound signals to steal cryptographic keys and sensor data or control instructions. Due to the increasing complexity of these attacks, it is crucial to assess the current mitigation methods to find effective defense tactics and steer future research in the right direction. This survey consolidates and analyzes diverse strategies to enhance security measures such as encryption safeguards, hardwarebased protections, obscuring software code, AI-powered anomaly detection, and shielding signals. In this study, the balance among security needs, computational performance, and system limitations is provided by highlighting a review of current options. Furthermore, we highlight research obstacles and upcoming paths like quantum-proof encryption methods, advanced artificial intelligence-powered intrusion detection, and innovative protective measures to strengthen the durability of future aerospace and UAV defense systems against new side channel risks. By amalgamating existing progress, this analysis offers valuable perspective for researchers, technicians, and decision-makers striving to create stronger security infrastructures.

Future-Proofing Security for UAVs With Post-Quantum Cryptography: A Review

Muhammad Asghar Khan, Shumaila Javaid, Syed Agha Hassnain Mohsan +2 more

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, are increasingly being employed across a broad spectrum of applications, ranging from military operations to commercial purposes. However, as UAVs become more integrated into everyday life, security and privacy concerns are similarly escalating due to vulnerabilities arising from operating on open wireless channels and having limited onboard computational resources. Moreover, with the emergence of quantum computers, conventional cryptographic methods that ensure the security and privacy of UAV communications are at severe risk. These risks encompass the possibility of unauthorized access, breaches of data, and cyber-physical attacks that jeopardize the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of UAV operations. Quantum computers are expected to break the conventional cryptography methods, such as symmetric and asymmetric schemes, with the support of Grover’s and Shor’s algorithms, respectively. Consequently, traditional cryptographic algorithms must give way to quantum-resistant algorithms, referred to as Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) algorithms. Although researchers actively develop, test, and standardize new PQC algorithms, the threat persists despite the progress made through these consistent efforts. This review article first examines the security and privacy landscape, including threats and requirements of UAVs. This article also discusses PQC and various PQC families and the status of the NIST’s implementation and standardization process. Lastly, we explore challenges and future directions in implementing PQC for UAVs.

A Quantum-Secure Authentication Protocol For UAV-GS Communications

Xin Ai, Kun Li, Shanshan Tu

With the widespread deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in both military and civilian domains, the demand for secure and encrypted communications in UAV networks integrated with ground stations has become increasingly prominent. Authentication and key agreement protocols are widely regarded as essential technical mechanisms for ensuring the security of data transmission in wireless communication environments. However, the rapid advancement of quantum computing technologies poses potential security threats to conventional protocols based on elliptic curve cryptography. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a quantum-secure authentication and key agreement protocol tailored for UAV–ground station communication scenarios. By incorporating Crystal-Kyber, the proposed protocol ensures quantum resistance while striving to minimize system computational overhead. The results of the informal security analysis indicate that the proposed protocol can effectively withstand a variety of known attacks. In addition, comprehensive comparative evaluations with existing related protocols demonstrate that, while maintaining low computational overhead, the proposed scheme exhibits stronger robustness in terms of security and functional properties.

Beyond encryption: Exploring the potential of physical layer security in UAV networks

Fang Xu, Sajed Ahmad, Muhammad Naveed khan +5 more

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have attracted much attention for civil and military uses because of their high mobility and adaptable deployment capabilities in open spaces. They facilitate agile communications and ubiquitous connectivity. UAVs benefit from dominant line-of-sight communication links but are more susceptible to adversary eavesdropping attacks. Since upper-layer cryptography methods may be insufficient, physical-layer security (PLS) is an attractive alternative. PLS capitalizes on the inherent randomness of wireless channels to improve information confidentiality, particularly in UAV systems. This article provides a comprehensive overview of PLS in the context of UAV systems, examining various communication channels, including ground-to-air (G2A), ground-to-ground (G2G), air-to-ground (A2G), and air-to-air (A2A). First, we give a general review of UAV communications, emphasizing its functions as user equipment, base station (BS), and mobile relay. Following that, we provide an overview of PLS and its forms. The survey organizes the most advanced PLS techniques against passive wireless eavesdropping regarding the channels they are designed to protect. These schemes are further categorized into optimization and secrecy performance analysis. We examine technical aspects within each sub-category and classify core contributions based on approaches and objectives to improve secrecy performance. Moreover, we added summary tables of the identified schemes considering optimization and secrecy performance analysis domains for each category, providing an in-depth understanding of their technical aspects. In addition, we discuss open research issues and identify future research directions to address evolving threats and requirements in UAV communications to improve information confidentiality.

A Look at Side Channel Attacks on Post-quantum Cryptography

Kevin Andrae Delgado-Vargas, Cuauhtémoc Mancillas-López, Gina Gallegos-García

Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) is designed to be secure against attacks from quantum computers, yet it remains vulnerable to classic side-channel attacks (SCAs), which exploit physical implementation leaks. This manuscript examines the various SCAs used to evaluate PQC schemes, focusing on non-invasive techniques such as timing, power, and electromagnetic analysis. We provide a detailed account of the execution of these attacks against diverse PQC algorithms and identify common vulnerabilities and weaknesses. Our study reveals that, while various countermeasures have been proposed to protect PQC implementations, they are not entirely effective against sophisticated attacks. Stronger and more resilient countermeasures are needed, especially in IoT environments. The review highlights the weaknesses in the current defenses, including the necessity for more robust masking techniques, adequate security countermeasures tailored to IoT constraints, and methods to generalize SCAs across diverse hardware platforms. These issues must be addressed to enhance the practical security of PQC schemes in real-world scenarios.
