Abstract

This work introduces a unified dynamical law of irreversibility that links three fundamental quantities in open quantum systems: coherence change, information flux, and irreversible entropy production. For finite-dimensional systems evolving under completely positive trace-preserving (CPTP) Markovian semigroups, we prove the exact identity κ˙(t)=Φinfo(t)−ΔS(t),\dot{\kappa}(t) = \Phi_{\text{info}}(t) - \Delta S(t),κ˙(t)=Φinfo(t)−ΔS(t), where κ(t)=S(ρdiag)−S(ρ)\kappa(t) = S(\rho_{\text{diag}}) - S(\rho)κ(t)=S(ρdiag)−S(ρ) is the entropy-valued coherence, Φinfo(t)=−ddtS(ρt∥ν)\Phi_{\text{info}}(t) = -\frac{d}{dt} S(\rho_t \Vert \nu)Φinfo(t)=−dtdS(ρt∥ν) is the information flux relative to a canonical maximum-entropy reference state ν\nuν, and ΔS(t)=Tr[L(ρt)(log⁡ρt−log⁡σ)]≥0\Delta S(t) = \text{Tr}[ \mathcal{L}(\rho_t)(\log \rho_t - \log \sigma)] \ge 0ΔS(t)=Tr[L(ρt)(logρt−logσ)]≥0 is the Spohn entropy production rate. The result establishes an exact entropy-balance identity connecting quantum coherence, thermodynamic irreversibility, and information flow — all expressed in consistent entropy-per-time units.Operational protocols are provided for experimental validation using modern quantum platforms (e.g., superconducting qubits, trapped ions, or cavity QED).A residual test, R(t)=κ˙−Φinfo+ΔSR(t) = \dot{\kappa} - \Phi_{\text{info}} + \Delta SR(t)=κ˙−Φinfo+ΔS, offers a falsifiable criterion for detecting non-Markovianity or hidden memory flux. The framework unifies information geometry, resource-theoretic coherence, and nonequilibrium thermodynamics into a single experimentally testable law, illuminating how quantum structure can be sustained only when information inflow compensates entropy production. Keywords:Quantum thermodynamics, information theory, open quantum systems, coherence, entropy production, relative entropy, Lindblad dynamics, irreversibility, information geometry.

Quantum Corridor III: Generator-Level Relative-Entropy Dissipation and Unraveling-Invariant Irreversibility

Kenneth Searcy

Irreversibility can be fixed before any path-space choice is made. This paper is the third quantum installment in the Forced Structure Series. It begins from the results of Quantum Corridor I and Quantum Corridor II, where admissible noncommutative maps were fixed as completely positive trace-preserving maps, quantum relative entropy was fixed as the corridor divergence, and admissible continuous-time evolution was fixed in the GKSL/Lindblad semigroup setting. The central result of the present paper is that these earlier corridor commitments already determine an intrinsic generator-level quantity: the instantaneous decay rate of the relative entropy D(Phi_t(rho)||pi) along an admissible semigroup Phi_t = e^(tL) relative to a faithful stationary state pi. In finite dimension, for strictly positive initial states, this rate is shown to equal -Tr(L(rho)(log rho - log pi)), and it is therefore nonnegative. The quantity is generator-determined and independent of any unraveling or path-space realization. In the commuting limit, it reduces to the classical generator-level entropy production rate. The paper is explicit about scope: it proves a canonical generator-level relative-entropy dissipation rate, not a full thermodynamic characterization, not a complete equality condition, and not yet a path-space bridge theorem.

Coherence Work in Open Quantum Systems: Operator-Theoretic Characterization, Irreducibility, and a Second Law Without Secular Approximation

Mitsutoshi Yamada

Open quantum systems admit two natural definitions of heat: the standard formulation δQ_std = Tr[H dρ] and the entropy-basis formulation δQ_ent = Σ_k dλ_k⟨λ_k|H|λ_k⟩. Their difference W* = δQ_std − δQ_ent is a coherence work term whose thermodynamic status is the subject of this paper. We prove three results. (I) Theorem C (irreducibility): there is no function f: ℝ → ℝ such that δQ_ent + f(W*) satisfies the Clausius equality T dS_vN for all density matrices, proved via a Jacobian rank argument with det J = 3(γ+γ_+)²(15+16 ln 2)/320 ≠ 0 for the complete L₋+L₊ Lindblad system. W* is therefore an irreducible thermodynamic quantity. (II) Theorem N (secular-free second law): the entropy production σ_new = −Tr[D[ρ](log ρ − log ρ_ss)] ≥ 0 requires only complete positivity, not the secular approximation. A concrete example demonstrates σ_std = −0.037 < 0 while σ_new = +0.083 > 0 in the non-secular regime. (III) Theorem H (characterization): W*(D[ρ]) = 0 for all ρ if and only if the Bloch transformation satisfies A_xx=A_yy=A_zz, all cross-axis entries zero, A_xy=−A_yx, and b=0 — equivalent to T₁=T₂ in NMR/quantum-optics language, strictly stronger than the secular condition (T₂ ≤ 2T₁). The three-way identity σ_new = σ_ent − W*/T + Tr[D[ρ](log ρ_ss + βH)], valid for any β, reveals W*/T = σ_ent − σ_std as an experimentally accessible quantity.

Critical Anatomical Review of "Irreversible Entropy Production, from Quantum to Classical" by Landi and Paternostro (2022)

The authors meticulously unpack the mechanics of this expression—its reduction to the Clausius form for thermal baths, its fluctuation-theorem interpretations under multiple backward protocols, its emergence in collisional models that recover the classical limit, and its reconciliation with thermo-majorization and second laws of resource theories. Thermodynamics Beyond Equilibrium in Coherent Quantum Systems

Md Manirul Ali, Po-Wen Chen

A central open question in quantum thermodynamics is the identification of thermodynamic entropy away from equilibrium. Although thermodynamic entropy coincides with the von Neumann entropy for a Gibbs state at equilibrium, the thermodynamic role of quantum coherence generated during nonequilibrium evolution remains unclear. Here, we show that von Neumann entropy does not, in general, represent the thermodynamic entropy governing heat exchange in coherent nonequilibrium quantum systems. By integrating the resource theory of quantum coherence with thermodynamic principles, we develop a general framework for nonequilibrium quantum thermodynamics. We identify thermodynamic entropy with the energy entropy derived from energy-measurement statistics and introduce a dynamical temperature extending the equilibrium concept to nonequilibrium states. Consequently, we obtain an exact entropy-balance relation separating the entropy flux associated with heat exchange from the coherence-loss contribution to entropy production, establishing an operational connection between quantum coherence, heat flow, and total entropy change. Unlike approaches relying on equilibrium reference states or stationary Gibbs ensembles, our framework uses instantaneous dynamical quantities and remains valid throughout transient nonequilibrium evolution. It provides consistent dynamical definitions of temperature, work, heat, and free energy. Applying the formalism to an exactly solvable open quantum system, we show that the first and second laws hold throughout transient evolution and that equilibrium thermodynamics emerges dynamically in the weak-coupling long-time limit. Our results establish a unified framework for coherent nonequilibrium quantum thermodynamics and suggest opportunities for controlling heat dissipation through coherence engineering in quantum thermal technologies.

Reconstructing quantum entropy production to probe irreversibility and correlations

Stefano Gherardini, Matthias M Müller, Andrea Trombettoni +2 more

Abstract One of the major goals of quantum thermodynamics is the characterization of irreversibility and its consequences in quantum processes. Here, we discuss how entropy production provides a quantification of the irreversibility in open quantum systems through the quantum fluctuation theorem. We start by introducing a two-time quantum measurement scheme, in which the dynamical evolution between the measurements is described by a completely positive, trace-preserving (CPTP) quantum map (forward process). By inverting the measurement scheme and applying the time-reversed version of the quantum map, we can study how this backward process differs from the forward one. When the CPTP map is unital, we show that the stochastic quantum entropy production is a function only of the probabilities to get the initial measurement outcomes in correspondence of the forward and backward processes. For bipartite open quantum systems we also prove that the mean value of the stochastic quantum entropy production is sub-additive with respect to the bipartition (except for product states). Hence, we find a method to detect correlations between the subsystems. Our main result is the proposal of an efficient protocol to determine and reconstruct the characteristic functions of the stochastic entropy production for each subsystem. This procedure enables to reconstruct even others thermodynamical quantities, such as the work distribution of the composite system and the corresponding internal energy. Efficiency and possible extensions of the protocol are also discussed. Finally, we show how our findings might be experimentally tested by exploiting the state of-the-art trapped-ion platforms.

Conservative Motion Theory – P III: Quantum Information Continuity and the Entropic Fredholm Limit

Kawasaki, Hideyo

We formulate the conservation of quantum information within the Conservative Motion Theory (CMT) as an Entropic Fredholm Limit. Quantum entropy S = -\operatorname{Tr}(\rho \log\rho) is represented as a Fredholm trace functional of reflection–positive operators, yielding an exact continuity law \frac{dS}{dt}=0 for closed systems. The analytic extension to open dynamics introduces an informational curvature term that encodes dissipative behavior and unifies thermodynamic irreversibility with Fredholm reflection continuity. This work establishes the physical branch of CMT–P by showing that information, entropy, energy, and charge conservation all arise from a single Fredholm trace identity.
