Abstract

Generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) codes have emerged as a promising class of error-correcting codes that extend the capabilities of traditional LDPC codes by incorporating more powerful component codes. This paper investigates an approach to construct long GLDPC codes using short component codes. In this scheme, the BCJR algorithm is used as a component decoder and integrated into the belief propagation algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that constructions incorporating quasi-cyclic LDPC codes yield the best performance. Compared to the conventional decoding approach for LDPC codes, the proposed generalized constructions demonstrated better bit and frame error rate performance. This approach is promising for communication systems that require low latency. A comparison is also provided with LDPC codes constructed using the Progressive Edge-Growth (PEG) algorithm.

On the Design of Generalized LDPC Codes with Component BCJR Decoding

Yanfang Liu, Pablo M. Olmos, David G. M. Mitchell

Generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) codes, where the single parity-check (SPC) nodes are replaced by generalized constraint (GC) nodes, are known to offer a reduced gap to capacity when compared with conventional LDPC codes, while also maintaining linear growth of minimum distance. However, for certain classes of practical GLDPC codes, there remains a gap to capacity even when utilizing blockwise decoding algorithm at GC nodes. In this work, we propose to optimize the design of GLDPC codes where the GC nodes are decoded with a trellis-based bit-wise Bahl-Cocke-Jelinek- Raviv (BCJR) component decoding algorithm. We analyze the asymptotic threshold behavior of GLDPC codes and determine the optimal proportion of the GC nodes in the GLDPC Tanner graph. We show significant performance improvements compared to existing designs with the same order of decoding complexity.

Irregular Generalized LDPC codes in Practical Communication Scenarios

Irina E. Bocharova, Boris D. Kudryashov, Sander Mikelsaar

High-rate irregular Generalized LDPC (GLDPC) codes with low-complexity constituent codes are studied. The main area of focus is the optimization of the underlying irregular binary LDPC codes and their matching with constituent codes. Finite length random coding bound on the maximum-likelihood decoding error probability of a random ensemble of irregular GLDPC codes is derived and compared with a similar bound for non-binary (NB) LDPC codes over small alphabets.A new algorithm for assigning columns of the parity-check matrix of a constituent code to nonzero elements of a base matrix of the quasi-cyclic (QC)-GLDPC code is presented. Examples of the constructed QC-GLDPC codes are given. The simulation results for frame error rate (FER) performance of the belief-propagation (BP) decoding for the QC-GLDPC codes are presented and compared with the same performance of NB QC-LDPC codes over small alphabets and binary LDPC codes in the WiFi and 5G standards. Both GLDPC codes and NB LDPC codes with sufficiently low decoding complexity are shown to outperform their binary LDPC counterparts, while GLDPC codes appear to be more advantageous in terms of decoding complexity.

Quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check codes based on decoder optimised progressive edge growth for short blocks

Cornelius T. Healy, Rodrigo C. de Lamare

A novel construction for quasi-cyclic (QC) regular and irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes based on a modification of the QC Progressive Edge Growth (PEG) algorithm is presented. Edge placement of the PEG-based algorithm is enhanced by use of the sum-product algorithm in the design of the parity-check matrix. The proposed algorithm is highly flexible in block length and rate, in particular when compared with algebraic constructions. The codes constructed by the proposed methods are tested in the AWGN channel and performance improvements are achieved. The proposed QC-LDPC codes provide an inherent trade-off between code performance and encoding/decoding complexity.

Structural Analysis of Generalized Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes: Rank, Design, and Generator Matrices

Roxana Smarandache, David G. M. Mitchell, Anthony Gómez-Fonseca

Generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) codes, where single parity-check constraints on the code bits are replaced with generalized constraints (an arbitrary linear code), are a promising class of codes for low-latency communication. The block error rate performance of the GLDPC codes, combined with a complementary outer code, has been shown to outperform a variety of state-of-the-art code and decoder designs with suitable lengths and rates for the 5G ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) regime. A major drawback of these codes is that it is not known how to construct appropriate polynomial matrices to encode them efficiently. In this paper, we analyze practical constructions of quasi-cyclic GLDPC (QC-GLDPC) codes and show how to construct polynomial generator matrices in various forms using minors of the polynomial matrix. The approach can be applied to fully generalized matrices or partially generalized (with mixed constraint node types) to find better performance/rate trade-offs. The resulting encoding matrices are presented in useful forms that facilitate efficient implementation. The rich substructure displayed also provides us with new methods of determining low weight codewords, providing lower and upper bounds on the minimum distance and often giving those of weight equal to the minimum distance. Based on the minors of the polynomial parity-check matrix, we also give a formula for the rank of any parity-check matrix representing a QC-LDPC or QC-GLDPC code, and hence, the dimension of the code. Finally, we show that by applying double graph-liftings, the code parameters can be improved without affecting the ability to obtain a polynomial generator matrix.

Construction of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check codes using Hamming codewords

Haijing Zhong, Shancheng Zhao, Li Chen +1 more

In this paper, we propose a new approach to construct quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes using Hamming codewords of weight three, namely the HM-QC-LDPC codes. Thanks to the distance property of Hamming codes, length four cycles are avoided from the Tanner graph of the constructed codes, resulting in codes of girth six. This approach can be further extended to construct QC-LDPC codes of girth eight. Our numerical results show that the proposal has a better cycle profile than the progressive-edge-growth (PEG) constructed codes, and consequently prevails in performance. Moreover, the constructed QC-LDPC code prevails the LDPC code of the IEEE802.22 standard by 0.2 dB at the bit error rate (BER) of 10-8when the codeword length is within hundreds of bits, making it a promising candidate for scenarios where strict decoding latency is imposed.

GLDPC Codes Based on Polar Constraints and Their Near-Optimal Decoding

Binghui Shi, Yongpeng Wu, Yin Xu +3 more

In this work, we introduce the integration of generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) codes with short polar component codes, termed GLDPC codes with polar component codes (GLDPC-PC). A recently proposed soft-input soft-output (SISO) decoder for polar-like codes enables effective iterative belief propagation decoding for GLDPC-PC. This SISO decoder after a post-processing exhibits little performance loss to the optimal SISO decoder when all the variable nodes have relatively low degrees. A three-step method is introduced to design protograph-based GLDPC codes. The constructed GLDPC codes are compared with 5G LDPC codes. They exhibit little performance loss in the waterfall region and possess better error floor with less iterations.
