The Universal Binding Operator: Cosmological Expansion as the Mechanism for Objective Reduction and the Endogenous DMT "Decoherence Shield"

Abstract

This paper introduces a dynamical, field-theoretic solution to the "Measurement Problem" within the context of the Penrose-Hameroff Orch OR theory. While traditional models identify gravitational self-energy ($\Delta E$) as the threshold for wavefunction collapse, the specific environmental driver for this transition has remained elusive. We propose that the Cosmological Scale Factor $a(t)$ serves as the Universal Binding Operator, physically driving the transition from quantum-collective states to localized classical coordinates. Key contributions of this work include: The $R(t) \propto a(t)^{1/2}$ Scaling Law: A derivation showing that cosmological expansion forces "Substrate Detachment," providing a mechanical basis for objective reduction. The Awareness Tensor ($A_{\mu\nu}$): A model of informational viscosity that acts as a local resistance to the universal expansion-driven decoherence. Endogenous DMT as a Coupling Stabilizer: A neuropharmacological framework proposing that endogenous DMT surges increase microtubule coherence ($Q$), effectively "shielding" the brain's internal frame from the Hubble flow and stabilizing "timeless" non-dual states. Experimental Reconciliations: Application of the model to recent $26$-$\mu$g sapphire crystal experiments and the $10$ MHz vibrational triplets observed in microtubule lattices. This synthesis unifies the physics of the macro-scale (cosmology) with the micro-scale (tubulin aromatics), reframing consciousness as a biological struggle for substrate-attachment in an increasingly dissipative universe. This version integrates a unified field-theoretic derivation of the 10.5 MHz microtubule resonance anchor, formally linking the Objective Reduction (OR) threshold to the cosmological scaling law R(t) ~ a(t)^{1/2} and the stabilizing role of endogenous DMT This version introduces the Universal Binding Operator a(t) as a cosmological driver of objective reduction, deriving an explicit a(t)1/2a(t)1/2 scaling law and cosmologically modified OR timescales for microtubule coherence and DMT‑stabilized conscious states

Orchestrated Objective Reduction of Quantum Coherence in Brain Microtubules: The "Orch OR" Model for Consciousness

Stuart R. Hameroff, Roger Penrose

Features of consciousness difficult to understand in terms of conventional neuroscience have evoked application of quantum theory, which describes the fundamental behavior of matter and energy. In this paper we propose that aspects of quantum theory (e.g. quantum coherence) and of a newly proposed physical phenomenon of quantum wave function self-collapse(objective reduction: OR -Penrose, 1994) are essential for consciousness, and occur in cytoskeletal microtubules and other structures within each of the brain's neurons. The particular characteristics of microtubules suitable for quantum effects include their crystal-like lattice structure, hollow inner core, organization of cell function and capacity for information processing. We envisage that conformational states of microtubule subunits (tubulins) are coupled to internal quantum events, and cooperatively interact (compute) with other tubulins. We further assume that macroscopic coherent superposition of quantum-coupled tubulin conformational states occurs throughout significant brain volumes and provides the global binding essential to consciousness. We equate the emergence of the microtubule quantum coherence with pre-conscious processing which grows (for up to 500 milliseconds) until the mass-energy difference among the separated states of tubulins reaches a threshold related to quantum gravity. According to the arguments for OR put forth in Penrose (1994), superpositioned states each have their own space-time geometries. When the degree of coherent mass-energy difference leads to sufficient separation of space-time geometry, the system must choose and decay (reduce, collapse) to a single universe state. In this way, a transient superposition of slightly differing space-time geometries persists until an abrupt quantum classical reduction occurs. Unlike the random, subjective reduction(SR, or R) of standard quantum theory caused by observation or environmental entanglement, the OR we propose in microtubules is a self-collapse and it results in particular patterns of microtubule-tubulin conformational states that regulate neuronal activities including synaptic functions. Possibilities and probabilities for post-reduction tubulin states are influenced by factors including attachments of microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) acting as nodeswhich tune and orchestratethe quantum oscillations. We thus term the self-tuning OR process in microtubules orchestrated objective reduction(B>Orch OR, and calculate an estimate for the number of tubulins (and neurons) whose coherence for relevant time periods (e.g. 500 milliseconds) will elicit Orch OR. In providing a connection among 1) pre-conscious to conscious transition, 2) fundamental space-time notions, 3) non-computability, and 4) binding of various (time scale and spatial) reductions into an instantaneous event (conscious now, we believe Orch OR in brain microtubules is the most specific and plausible model for consciousness yet proposed.

Cosmic Quantum Coherence: A Zero-Point Field Extension of the Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch-OR) Theory

Lucas Pinheiro

We propose Cosmic Quantum Coherence (CQC), a hybrid framework unifying the gravitational objective-reduction mechanism of Penrose-Hameroff Orch-OR with Keppler’s TRAZE zero-point field (ZPF) resonance model (2025a,b). Conscious experience arises from resonant coupling between neuronal microtubules and specific electromagnetic ZPF modes. Microtubules function as fractal antennas that selectively amplify biologically relevant ZPF modes, with gravitational self-energy providing discrete “OR” triggers for qualia. The model is scale-invariant and incorporates stochastic resonance, allowing thermal noise (37 °C) to stabilize rather than destroy coherence. A modified collapse-time equation with explicit ultraviolet cutoff and dimensionless coupling constant resolves the “warm and wet” decoherence objection. The framework is fully falsifiable via electromagnetic shielding experiments and bridges gravitational and electromagnetic quantum effects without long-range entanglement fragility. This constitutes the first explicit integration of Orch-OR with the TRAZE framework.

Addendum XVI — Why Quantum Coherence Survives Inside the Neuron: A Calculable Answer to the Central Open Problem of Orch-OR.

ELEANDRO RODRIGUES

Since Penrose and Hameroff proposed Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch-OR) in 1994, the theory has faced one unresolved structural criticism: the brain is a warm, wet, noisy environment at 37°C, where standard physics predicts quantum decoherence in 10⁻¹³ seconds, far too fast for any cognitively relevant process. Penrose and Hameroff proposed that microtubules possess special protective properties, and experimental confirmation came from Babcock et al. (2024) and subsequent work in 2025, demonstrating collective quantum states by superradiance and electromagnetic resonances in microtubules at physiological temperature. But the structural mechanism by which this protection occurs has not been formally derived. Simultaneously, the relationship between Penrose's objective reduction (OR), driven by gravitational energy separation E_G, and standard environmental decoherence has remained an open conceptual gap: the two are treated as distinct and nearly competing mechanisms, with no formal bridge between them. This addendum provides both missing formalizations. Applying Eq. M1 of the Theory of Subjection (Rodrigues, 2026) to the microtubule microenvironment, it derives that the tubular geometry creates an internal jurisdiction J_MT with σ_S(J_MT) ≈ 0,13, reduced to 15% of the cytoplasmic severity σ_S(J_ext) ≈ 0,85 by the tubulin wall acting as a jurisdictional filter Θ_interface ≈ 0,15. This raises coherence time from 10⁻¹³ s in the cytoplasm to 10⁻⁷–10⁻⁵ s inside the microtubule, consistent with Babcock's superradiant states. Applying Eq. G3 (jurisdictional Lindblad decoherence), the formal correspondence E_G ↔ σ_S · Δε_J is derived: objective reduction is not a separate mechanism from decoherence, it is jurisdictional decoherence when the relevant jurisdiction is the local gravitational field and σ_S is low enough for E_G to dominate. For tubulin dimers at 1 nm conformational separation, τ_OR ≈ 0,46 μs and τ_dec(J_MT) ≈ 1–100 μs: the same order of magnitude, making OR competitively relevant exclusively inside the microtubule. The translation operator T(J_MT → J_neural) ≈ 0,013, derived from Eq. N2 with four experimentally calibrated dimensions (Addendum XXIX, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.20071100), formalizes Hameroff's "orchestration" as the descending determination coefficient κ_det ≈ 0,80, and the ascending OR events as suggestion accumulation requiring N_crit ~ 10⁴ simultaneous active tubulin dimers. The 73% drop in φ_IIT measured by Tononi under general anesthesia corresponds exactly to the collapse of T when anesthetics raise σ_S(J_MT) toward σ_S(J_ext), unifying Orch-OR, Integrated Information Theory and the Theory of Subjection in a single calculable framework.

Topological Soliton Stability in Microtubule Lattices: A Rigorous Field-Theoretic Framework for Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch OR).

Jitesh Pathak

The Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch OR) theory posits that subjective conscious moments arise from the spontaneous, gravity-induced collapse of quantum superpositions within neuronal microtubules. However, the mechanism by which these superpositions survive rapid thermal decoherence in a 37°C biological environment remains a point of severe contention. This paper introduces a comprehensive topological field theory to resolve this decoherence paradox. By defining the conformational states of the tubulin dimer lattice as a continuous periodic field, we mathematically demonstrate that quantum information is preserved via macroscopic Topological Charge rather than relying on external thermal shielding. Utilizing a stochastic Sine-Gordon model extended to a 3D Skyrme-Faddeev geometric framework, we derive the effective mass of topological solitons (kinks and Hopfions). We computationally and mathematically prove that continuous megahertz environmental driving forces these solitons into a superposition state that accumulates a localized gravitational self-energy of 10^-18 Joules, satisfying the Diósi-Penrose mass-energy threshold for Objective Reduction.
