Abstract

This century has been marked by an increasing understanding of quantum mechanics, with our knowledge being continuously refined and complicated. As such, the quantum computer’s potential for drug discovery, decryption and financial optimisation has gained increasing traction. With the United Nations declaring 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, the advent of the quantum technologies has drawn closer than many have prepared for. As the global community continues to approach the brink of quantum revolution, exciting opportunities and serious challenges have presented themselves to us. Quantum computers have evolved beyond the technological experiments locked in quantum science laboratories, they have become real, including the experimental creation of room-temperature quantum computing at the Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre in Western Australia, the radical streamlining of quantum algorithms which calculate the ground state energies of orbital electrons by Nicole Holzmann and her colleagues, and the optimism by firms in their capacity to provide useful commercial applications of quantum computers in less than a decade’s time. As quantum computing continues to gain momentum in its rapid evolution, gaining progress in its abilities, the technology presents great possibilities which can further the endeavours of the global scientific and mathematical communities. However, the risks that quantum computers pose to cryptography, security and privacy, as well as financial assets cannot be ignored. There has been great debate about the timeline that quantum technology will occupy, whether quantum computers will be a commodity within the next 5 years, or if it will take decades before a fully functioning machine is made. It is constantly too early, yet too late to react to quantum technology. Ultimately, while it is hard to predict when exactly a quantum revolution will take place, it is necessary to acknowledge the slow yet inevitable progress being made in this industry. As such, this whitepaper aims to investigate the fundamentals of quantum computing, giving an overview of the generalised risks and opportunities of quantum computing, based on insights gathered at the Insights Forum held at the Singapore Fintech Festival in November 2024. This is supplemented by specific opportunities and risks present in the finance and banking industry. Finally, this article discusses the specific preparations and preventative measures that companies can take to ensure that they are ready for a post-quantum future.

The Future of Quantum Computing

Yaash Sahnan

Quantum Computing often described as one of the most exciting frontiers of modern science—a field that does not just push the boundaries of technology but also reshapes how we think about solving problems. Unlike classical computers, which process information in simple 0s and 1s, quantum mechanics, allowing a single qubit to explore multiple possibilities at the same time. This gives them the potential to perform calculations that would take even today’s most powerful supercomputers thousands of years. In recent years, progress has been rapid, with breakthroughs in hardware, algorithms and applications that range from developing new medicines to strengthening artificial intelligence and tackling climate change. Yet, enormous challenges remain, such as stabilizing fragile qubits, reducing error rates, and making these systems accessible beyond a handful of elite labs. This paper explores both the promises and the pitfalls of quantum computing, offering a closer look at how it could reshape industries, global security and even the pace of human innovation in the decades ahead.

Quantum Computing and the Next Technological Revolution: Transforming Civilization Through Quantum Power

Ejiro U, Osiobe, Waleed A., Hammood, Safia, Malallah +3 more

Quantum mechanics principles underpin quantum computing, signaling a major shift in how we process information. While it offers immense processing power and potential advantages, it also presents significant challenges for the cryptocurrency industry. This sector has grown rapidly, supporting decentralized finance and empowering users worldwide, but it also attracts malicious actors looking to exploit its vulnerabilities. Traditional cryptography remains strong, yet increasingly sophisticated computational attacks threaten security. As the cryptocurrency market expands, quantum computing offers both opportunities, such as improved transaction security, and risks, like easier decryption for hackers. Understanding quantum technology’s benefits and challenges is crucial as it develops. Currently, data is protected by traditional cryptography, but future, more powerful quantum computers could weaken this security. This article explores potential uses of quantum computing in daily life and business, explains its functions simply, and discusses societal impacts. Its goal is to help students and general readers understand how quantum technology might transform our world through clear language and real-life examples. Topics include the basics of quantum computing, its present and future applications across industries, and its societal effects. We provide a thorough analysis of how quantum computing could reshape society through mathematical insights, practical examples, and future perspectives.

Quantum finance in the age of quantum computing: addressing challenges, unlocking opportunities, and shaping the future

Prihana Vasishta, Tushar Saini, Anju Singla

Quantum technology is evolving rapidly with a potential to influence financial services. While quantum computing offers strong prospects for improving predictive analytics, risk management, and portfolio optimisation, its integration into financial systems remains constrained by algorithmic redesign requirements and technological limitations. This study reviews and synthesises research at the intersection of quantum computing and finance to map prevailing trends, thematic concentrations, and future inquiry paths. A systematic search of Web of Science and Scopus (2000–2023) identified 75 relevant studies, which were analysed using VOSViewer and Biblioshiny. The analysis shows that scholarly interest in quantum applications to finance accelerates only after 2020, indicating a temporal lag relative to the broader quantum computing literature. Four thematic clusters emerge: quantum cryptography and security, financial data processing, quantum algorithms for finance, and quantum machine learning. These areas reflect differing levels of maturity but reveal a shared emphasis on high-complexity modelling, enhanced data processing, and secure transaction frameworks. The review underscores the need for deeper algorithmic refinement, robust validation of financial use cases, and interdisciplinary collaboration among physicists, computer scientists, and finance researchers. Advancing these fronts will be essential for translating quantum potential into practical, scalable financial innovations.
