Study of the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless transition: an unsupervised machine learning approach

Sumit Haldar, Sk Saniur Rahaman, Manoranjan Kumar

The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in magnetic systems is an intriguing phenomenon, and estimating the BKT transition temperature is a long-standing problem. In this work, we explore anisotropic classical Heisenberg XY and XXZ models with ferromagnetic exchange on a square lattice and antiferromagnetic exchange on a triangular lattice using an unsupervised machine learning approach called principal component analysis (PCA). The earlier PCA studies of the BKT transition temperature (TBKT) using the vorticities as input fail to give any conclusive results, whereas, in this work, we show that the proper analysis of the first principal component-temperature curve can estimateTBKTwhich is consistent with the existing literature. This analysis works well for the anisotropic classical Heisenberg with a ferromagnetic exchange on a square lattice and for frustrated antiferromagnetic exchange on a triangular lattice. The classical anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnetic model on the triangular lattice has two close transitions: theTBKTand Ising-like phase transition for chirality atTc, and it is difficult to separate these transition points. It is also noted that using the PCA method and manipulation of their first principal component not only makes the separation of transition points possible but also determines transition temperature.

Phases and quantum phase transitions in the anisotropic antiferromagnetic Kitaev-Heisenberg- Γ magnet

Animesh Nanda, Adhip Agarwala, Subhro Bhattacharjee

We study the Kitaev-Heisenberg-$\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ model with antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchanges in the strong anisotropic (toric code) limit to understand the phases and the intervening phase transitions between the gapped ${Z}_{2}$ quantum spin liquid and the spin-ordered (in the Heisenberg limit) as well as paramagnetic phases (in the pseudodipolar, $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$, limit). We find that the paramagnetic phase obtained in the large $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ limit has no topological entanglement entropy and is proximate to a gapless critical point of a system described by equal superposition of differently oriented stacked one-dimensional ${Z}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}$ symmetry protected topological phases. Using a combination of exact diagonalization calculations and field theoretic analysis we map out the phases and phase transitions to reveal the complete phase diagram as a function of the Heisenberg, the Kitaev, and the pseudodipolar interactions. Our work shows a rich plethora of unconventional phases and phase transitions and provides a comprehensive understanding of the physics of anisotropic Kitaev-Heisenberg-$\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ systems along with our recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 102, 235124 (2020)] where the ferromagnetic Kitaev exchange was studied.

Quantum Phase Transitions in the Kitaev-Heisenberg Model on a Single Hexagon

Dorota Gotfryd, Andrzej M. Oleś

We present a detailed analysis of the KitaevHeisenberg model on a single hexagon. The energy spectra and spinspin correlations obtained using exact diagonalisation indicate quantum phase transitions between antiferromagnetic and anisotropic spin correlations when the Kitaev interactions increase. In cluster mean-eld approach frustrated nearest neighbor exchange stabilizes the stripe phase in between the Néel phase and frustrated one which evolves towards the Kitaev spin liquid.

We study the Kitaev-Heisenberg-$\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ model with antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchanges in the strong anisotropic (toric code) limit to understand the phases and the intervening phase transitions between the gapped Z2{Z}_{2}Z2 quantum spin liquid and the spin-ordered (in the Heisenberg limit) as well as paramagnetic phases (in the pseudodipolar, $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$, limit).
