Abstract

We propose and analyze a model of objective wave-function collapse induced by alightreal scalar field ϕ coupled to the mass density of matter viaa Higgs-portal interaction. Themodel aims to provide a microscopic origin for continuous spontaneous localization (CSL)–type dynamics while remaining compatible with particle physics, astrophysical, and non-interferometric collapse constraints. Starting from a concrete Higgs-portal Lagrangian, we derive the non-Markovian master equation for the reduced density matrix of matter obtained by integrating out ϕ in a general Gaussian state. We show that for a massive scalar field in thermal equilibrium (including the vacuum) the Markovian limit required to recover a CSL-like Lindblad term vanishes identically : the time-integrated field correlator defining the would-be Markovian kernel is zero for m_ϕ= ̸=0. This provides a simple“no-go” result: a standard equilibrium quantum field cannot generate a white-noise collapse term of CSL type. We then introduce a phenomenological non-equilibrium scalar noise parameterized by a dimensionless amplification factor X_ϕ and derive the mapping between the scalar–nucleon coupling gs and the CSL collapse rate λ as a function of the correlation length r_C. Using theHiggs-portal structure, we relate gs to the mixing angle θ and portal coupling λHS and confront the model with (i) astrophysical bounds on fifth-forces and stellar cooling, (ii) collider limits on invisible Higgs decays and Higgs–scalar mixing, and (iii) non-interferometric CSL constraints from X-ray emission, bulk heating, cold atoms, LISA Pathfinder and planetary heating. We show that the reexists aviable region of parameter space with mϕ∼eV, r_C∼200nm, gs≲10e-13, λ_HS∼10e−11 and λ∼10e12s−1 which satisfies simultaneously all current constraints while providing a potentially observable collapse rate for mesoscopic systems. Our analysis clarifies both the promise and limitations of Higgs-portal scalar field collapse models : they offer a concrete, testable UV completion for CSL, but require the scalar sector to be in a non-equilibrium, effectively classical state whose microscopic origin remains to be explained. Microscopic Cosmological Origin of CSL Collapse Noise via Higgs-Portal Scalar Misalignment

Ahmed Beniaiche

The Continuous Spontaneous Localization (CSL) model offers a dynamical solution to the quantum measurement problem by introducing a classical stochastic field that induces wavefunction collapse, yet the physical origin of this field remainselusive. A promising recent proposal identifies a light scalar field coupled via the Higgs portal as the source of this collapse-inducing noise, with its efficacy governed by a non-equilibrium enhancement factor Xϕ. In this work, we perform the first comprehensive, first-principles derivation of Xϕ from cosmological dynamics, establishing a concrete microphysical origin forCSL noise. We analyze two well-motivated cosmological production mechanisms: - vacuum misalignment—where the scalar acquires a coherent displacement during inflation—and freeze-in via ultra-weak Higgs interactions. For each mechanism, we derive explicit, predictive expressions for Xϕ in terms of fundamental parameters(λHS , ϕi, Hinf , mϕ), connecting inflationary initial conditions to laboratory-scale col lapse rates. Our analysis reveals a fundamental dichotomy: while the misalignment mechanism naturally yields Xϕ ∼ O(10−10e9) from realistic initial conditions (ϕi ∼ 10e13−10e15 GeV, Hinf ∼ 10e10 GeV), enabling observable CSL effects with λ ∼ 2×10e−12 s−1, the freeze-in mechanism produces Xϕ ≪ 1 for couplings allowed by astrophysics, rendering it phenomenologically irrelevant for collapse dynamics. We confront these predictions with the complete suite of current observational constraints, including stellar cooling bounds, fifth-force searches, Planck data on isocurvature perturbations and dark matter abundance, LHC Higgs measurements, and non-interferometric tests of CSL. Notably, we demonstrate that: 1. The viable parameter space for misalignment-produced CSL noise is robust, occupying approximately two orders of magnitude in ϕi and Hinf ;2. All existing constraints from particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology are simultaneously satisfied without fine-tuning;3. Key predictions include a universal collapse rate λ ∼ 2 × 10e−12 s−1 for rC ∼ 200 nm, mass-dependent decoherence in matter-wave interferometry, and potential high-frequency spectral features from the oscillating condensate. This work provides three key advances: (i) it resolves the long-standing “no-go” obstruction for equilibrium scalar fields to generate Markovian collapse noise by identifying cosmological misalignment as a natural source of persistent non-equilibrium; (ii) it establishes a testable connection between early-universe physics (inflation, scalar condensates) and laboratory-scale quantum phenomena; and (iii) it transforms Higgs-portal collapse models from phenomenological frameworks into predictive cosmological scenarios with falsifiable predictions for next-generation experiments. By deriving Xϕ from cosmology rather than parameterizing it, we complete the microphysical foundation of scalar-field collapse models and open a new pathway toward unifying quantum foundations with cosmological history.

Substrate-Induced Collapse: A Gravitationally-Coupled Spontaneous Localization Model

xing

This memo addresses a question: In the “substrate field–soliton” model (v2 paper), canthe intuition “observation collapse = irreversible physical process” be realized as a concretedynamical collapse model? The answer is yes, but with a decisive number attached. Weprove that: (i) The master equation driven by the noise naturally derived from the masscoupling m(ϕ) is structurally isomorphic to the CSL (Continuous Spontaneous Localization) model, and the two ad hoc assumptions of CSL—mass-weighted coupling and positionbasis—are no longer assumptions in this model, but corollaries of the equivalence principleand the mass density operator; (ii) The collapse rate is proportional to Newton’s constant,Γ ∝ Gm2, realizing the motivation of the Di´osi–Penrose program that “collapse strengthis given by gravity,” though the mechanism is different (substrate noise rather than spacetime superposition instability); (iii) Decisive verdict: If the noise is taken as the quantumvacuum fluctuation of ϕ, the single-nucleon collapse rate is ∼ 10−28 s−1, which is 12 orders of magnitude smaller than the value required by GRW—the pure quantum fluctuationversion cannot solve the measurement problem. To achieve true collapse, “intrinsic probability” must be interpreted as a classical true-random component of the substrate condensate, whose power D becomes a new free parameter. In this case, the model becomes a CSL witha specific mediating field, and its heating rate directly interfaces with existing experimentalconstraints (X-ray spontaneous emission, cantilever noise, LISA Pathfinder). We presenta complete parameter space analysis, including the “localization-heating squeeze” identityP/λ = ℏ2/(2m0rC2), which explains why models with rC ∼ 1 fm are strictly ruled out, whilethose with rC ∼ 10−7 m survive.

Colored collapse models from the non-interferometric perspective

Matteo Carlesso, Luca Ferialdi, Angelo Bassi

Abstract Models of spontaneous wave function collapse describe the quantum-to-classical transition by assuming a progressive breakdown of the superposition principle when the mass of the system increases, providing a well-defined phenomenology in terms of a non-linearly and stochastically modified Schrödinger equation, which can be tested experimentally. The most popular of such models is the continuous spontaneous localization (CSL) model: in its original version, the collapse is driven by a white noise, and more recently, generalizations in terms of colored noises, which are more realistic, have been formulated. We will analyze how current non-interferometric tests bound the model, depending on the spectrum of the noise. We will find that low frequency purely mechanical experiments provide the most stable and strongest bounds. Graphical abstract

Relativistic dynamical collapse model

Philip Pearle

A model is discussed where all operators are constructed from a quantum scalar field whose energy spectrum takes on all real values. The Schr\"odinger picture wave function depends upon space and time coordinates for each particle, as well as an inexorably increasing evolution parameter $s$ which labels a foliation of spacelike hypersurfaces. The model is constructed to be manifestly Lorentz invariant in the interaction picture. Free particle states and interactions are discussed in this framework. Then, the formalism of the continuous spontaneous localization (CSL) theory of dynamical collapse is applied. The collapse-generating operator is chosen to be the particle number space-time density. Unlike previous relativistically invariant models, the vacuum state is not excited. The collapse dynamics depends upon two parameters, a parameter $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ which represents the collapse rate/volume and a scale factor $\ensuremath{\ell}$. A common example of collapse dynamics, involving a clump of matter in a superposition of two locations, is analyzed. The collapse rate is shown to be identical to that of nonrelativistic CSL when the GRW-CSL choice of $\ensuremath{\ell}=a=1{0}^{\ensuremath{-}5}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{cm}$, is made, along with $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}=\ensuremath{\lambda}/{a}^{3}$ (GRW-CSL choice $\ensuremath{\lambda}=1{0}^{\ensuremath{-}16}{s}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$). The collapse rate is also satisfactory with the choice $\ensuremath{\ell}$ as the size of the Universe, with $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}=\ensuremath{\lambda}/\ensuremath{\ell}{a}^{2}$. Because the collapse narrows wave functions in space and time, it increases a particle's momentum and energy, altering its mass. It is shown that, with $\ensuremath{\ell}=a$, the change of mass of a nucleon is unacceptably large but, when $\ensuremath{\ell}$ is the size of the Universe, the change of mass over the age of the Universe is acceptably small.

Quantum Wave Function Theory: A Covariant, Dissipative and Non-Markovian Framework for objective Wave-Functional Localization

Shreyansh Biswal

Standard quantum mechanics relies on an observer-dependent measurement postulate and an artificial linear-nonlinear dichotomy to resolve the superposition of macroscopically distinct states. While objective collapse models---such as Continuous Spontaneous Localization (CSL), Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber (GRW), and Di\'{o}si-Penrose gravitationally induced models---introduce stochastic non-linearities to achieve objective state reduction, they suffer from three fundamental pathologies: continuous energy non-conservation (spontaneous heating), reliance on memoryless white-noise approximations, and unphysical infinite spatial tails. In this work, I present Quantum Wave Function (QWF) Theory, a comprehensive non-perturbative framework that elevates the state functional $\Psi$ to an exact physical ontology. QWF introduces a non-Markovian colored noise memory kernel $K(t - \tau)$ governed by a finite high-frequency cutoff, capturing realistic vacuum and environmental back-action times. To resolve the long-standing spontaneous heating anomaly, I incorporate a momentum-dependent dissipative counter-term $\hat{D}_{\text{diss}}$ into the stochastic differential equation, strictly enforcing energy conservation $\frac{d}{dt} \langle \hat{H} \rangle = 0$ in closed isolated systems. Furthermore, I eliminate the infinite tail pathology by introducing a state-dependent stochastic amplitude filtering protocol where the microscopic collapse coupling dynamically increases in the asymptotic regime to enforce exponential tail damping below a physical threshold $\epsilon$, without breaking density matrix linearity. Extending beyond non-relativistic domains, I formulate a fully covariant quantum field description on arbitrary spacelike hypersurfaces $\Sigma$ using a Tomonaga-Schwinger stress-energy framework, ensuring causality and preventing superluminal signaling. Finally, I prove via martingale analysis that standard Born-rule statistics ($P = |\Psi|^2$) emerge naturally as a dynamical attractor of the stochastic localization process. QWF provides a mathematically rigorous, falsifiable, and complete resolution to the quantum measurement problem with explicit, testable signatures for modern gravitational wave and optomechanical experiments.

Non-Markovian Poissonian Spontaneous Collapse Models

Nicolò Piccione

Spontaneous collapse models provide a possible solution to the measurement problem by modifying standard quantum dynamics. The modification consists of adding non-linear and stochastic terms inducing wavefunction collapse in space. Non-Markovian versions of these models are motivated by physical reasons, phenomenological consistency, and potential for relativistic extensions. Here, we investigate a non-Markovian version of the Poissonian Spontaneous Localization (PSL) model, i.e., a model characterized by instantaneous and localized collapse events. We assume that our model is characterized by a typical time scale $τ_C$ so that, given an initial state $ρ_0$ of standard quantum matter at time $t=0$, we derive an effective long-time ($t\gg τ_C$) statistical dynamics in terms of a CPTP map $Φ_t$. We then show how $Φ_t$ can be made equal to that obtained by non-Markovian CSL models. Moreover, given $Φ_t$, we obtain the associated time-convolutionless master equation by means of a supercumulant expansion. Finally, we characterize the collapse events process (for events with $t \gg τ_C$) given an initial quantum state $ρ_0$ at $t=0$.
