Robust frame synchronization for free-space continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Ping Wang, Peng Huang, Rui Chen +1 more

Free-space continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) is an important technology that enables all-day quantum key distribution. Precise frame synchronization is a prerequisite for establishing a correlation between legitimate users of CV-QKD. In free-space CV-QKD, channel transmittance fluctuation caused by atmospheric turbulence increases the difficulty of synchronization. Also, as the channel transmittance is monitored in many reported experiments, the transmittance data also needs to be synchronized. We propose a novel method to solve the above problems by inserting two kinds of synchronization frames, i.e., data synchronization frames and transmittance synchronization frames. The performance of the proposed method is analyzed and Monte Carlo simulation is conducted to test its performance. The results demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of this method. The proposed method paves the way for the realization of free-space CV-QKD.

Hybrid DV-CV QKD Outperforming Existing QKD Protocols in Terms of Secret-Key Rate and Achievable Distance

Ivan B. Djordjević

To overcome the limitations of both discrete variable (DV) and continuous variable (CV) QKD protocols, in this paper, a hybrid DV-CV QKD protocol is proposed. In the proposed hybrid QKD protocol, Alice simultaneously performs discrete modulation (DM)-based encoding for CV-QKD subsystem and time-phase encoding for DV-QKD on a transmitter side. On receiver side, Bob employs a 1:2 optical space switch to select either DV-QKD receiver or CV-QKD receiver with the optimized probability of selection. Bob further performs the classical postprocessing applied to both subsystems so that resulting joint secure key is derived from both subsystems. The proposed hybrid QKD protocol significantly outperforms previously introduced both Gaussian modulation (GM)- and DM-based CV-QKD protocols as well as DV-QKD protocols in terms of both secret-key rate (SKR) and achievable transmission distance.

Monolithically Integrated CV-QKD Transmitter with On-Chip Laser, IQ Modulator, and VOA

J. Konig, Ozan Çirkinoglu, Xaveer J. M. Leijtens

We report a monolithic CV-QKD transmitter chip, integrating laser, IQ modulator, and VOA. Key metrics include 120 kHz linewidth, > 8 GHz modulation, > 23 dB extinction, 56 dB SMSR, and 58 dB attenuation, meeting CV-QKD requirements.
