Dimensionality Effect on Exceptional Fermionic Superfluidity with Spin-Dependent Asymmetric Hopping

Soma Takemori, Kazuki Yamamoto, Akihisa Koga

Non-Hermitian (NH) quantum systems host exceptional points (EPs), where eigenstates and eigenvalues coalesce, leading to unconventional many-body phenomena absent in Hermitian systems. While NH fermionic systems with complex interactions exhibit superfluid (SF) breakdown with EPs, spin-dependent asymmetric hopping can stabilize a NH superfluid (NH-SF) that coexists with EPs. In this work, we investigate the quasi-one-dimensional NH attractive Fermi-Hubbard model by using NH-BCS theory. We demonstrate that, when the system is regarded as weakly-coupled chains, the exceptional SF phase becomes unstable and metastable (exceptional) SF state appears between the stable SF and normal states. In the one-dimensional limit, the exceptional SFs disappear entirely and EPs only appear on the phase boundary between the normal and SF states. These results reveal how dimensional crossover governs the stability of the exceptional SF, providing the insights into the interplay between dimensionality and dissipation, with potential relevance for experimental implications in ultracold atoms.

Exceptional points in the one-dimensional Hubbard model

Roman Rausch, Robert Peters, Tsuneya Yoshida

Abstract Non-Hermitian phenomena offer a novel approach to analyze and interpret spectra in the presence of interactions. Using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG), we demonstrate the existence of exceptional points for the one-particle Green’s function of the 1D alternating Hubbard chain with chiral symmetry, with a corresponding Fermi arc at zero frequency in the spectrum. They result from the non-Hermiticity of the effective Hamiltonian describing the Green’s function and only appear at finite temperature. They are robust and can be topologically characterized by the zeroth Chern number. This effect illustrates a case where temperature has a strong effect in 1D beyond the simple broadening of spectral features. Finally, we demonstrate that exceptional points appear even in the two-particle Green’s function (charge structure factor) where an effective Hamiltonian is difficult to establish, but move away from zero frequency due to a distinct symmetry constraint.

Exact Liouvillian Spectrum of a One-Dimensional Dissipative Hubbard Model

Masaya Nakagawa, Norio Kawakami, Masahito Ueda

A one-dimensional dissipative Hubbard model with two-body loss is shown to be exactly solvable. We obtain an exact eigenspectrum of a Liouvillian superoperator by employing a non-Hermitian extension of the Bethe-ansatz method. We find steady states, the Liouvillian gap, and an exceptional point that is accompanied by the divergence of the correlation length. A dissipative version of spin-charge separation induced by the quantum Zeno effect is also demonstrated. Our result presents a new class of exactly solvable Liouvillians of open quantum many-body systems, which can be tested with ultracold atoms subject to inelastic collisions.
