Collective Excitations of Self-Bound Droplets of a Dipolar Quantum Fluid

D. Baillie, Ryan Wilson, P. B. Blakie

We calculate the collective excitations of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in the regime where it self-binds into droplets stabilized by quantum fluctuations. We show that the filament-shaped droplets act as a quasi-one-dimensional waveguide along which low-angular-momentum phonons propagate. The evaporation (unbinding) threshold occurring as the atom number N is reduced to the critical value N_{c} is associated with a monopolelike excitation going soft as ε_{0}∼(N-N_{c})^{1/4}. Considering the system in the presence of a trapping potential, we quantify the crossover from a trap-bound condensate to a self-bound droplet.

Collective excitations of a strongly-correlated non-equilibrium photon fluid across the Mott/superfluid phase transition

Fabio Caleffi, Massimo Capone, Iacopo Carusotto

We develop a Gutzwiller theory for the non-equilibrium steady states of a strongly-interacting photon fluid driven by a non-Markovian incoherent pump. In particular, we explore the collective excitation modes across the out-of-equilibrium Mott/superfluid transition, characterizing the diffusive Goldstone mode in the superfluid phase and the particle/hole excitations in the insulating one. Observable features in the pump-and-probe optical response of the system are highlighted. Our results appear as experimentally accessible to state-of-the-art circuit-QED devices and open the way for driven-dissipative fluids of light as quantum simulators of novel many-body scenarios.

Collective excitations in a confined, interacting dilute Bose-condensed fluid

G. G. N. Angilella, Norman Henry March, R. Pucci

In the Thomas–Fermi (TF) regime, S. Stringari [Phys. Rev. Lett., 77, 2360 (1996)] established the hydrodynamic normal modes of an interacting dilute Bose-condensed fluid confined in an isotropic harmonic trap. Here, we extend this treatment beyond the TF condensate using the work of B. Hu, G. Huang and Y. Ma [Phys. Rev. A, 69, 063608 (2004)] as a starting point. Both numerical results for low-lying eigenfrequencies, for various angular momentum quantum numbers ℓ and n = 0, and also samples of corresponding eigenfunctions, are presented. Finally, eigenfrequencies are also given for some collective excitations in an axially symmetrical trap.
