Path integration over compact and noncompact rotation groups

M. Böhm, Georg Junker

Applications of group theoretical methods in the path integral formalism of nonrelativistic quantum theory are considered. Analysis of the symmetry of the Lagrangian leads to the expansion of the short time propagator in matrix elements of unitary irreducible representations of the symmetry group. Identification of the coordinates with the group parameters transforms the path integral to integrals over the group manifold. The integration is performed using the orthogonality of the representations. Compact and noncompact rotation groups are considered, where the corresponding path integral is embedded in Euclidean and pseudo-Euclidean spaces, respectively. The unit sphere and unit hyperboloid may either be viewed as the group manifold itself or at least as a group quotient. In the first case Fourier analysis leads to an expansion in group characters. In the second case an expansion in zonal spherical functions is obtained. As examples the groups SO(n), SU(2), SO(n−1,1), and SU(1,1) are explicitly discussed. The path integral on SO(n+m) and SO(n,m) in bispherical coordinates is also treated.

BRAID STATISTICS IN LOCAL QUANTUM THEORY

Jürg Martin Fröhlich, Fabrizio Gabbiani

We present details of a mathematical theory of superselection sectors and their statistics in local quantum theory over (two- and) three-dimensional space-time. The framework for our analysis is algebraic quantum field theory. Statistics of superselection sectors in three-dimensional local quantum theory with charges not localizable in bounded space-time regions and in two-dimensional chiral theories is described in terms of unitary representations of the braid groups generated by certain Yang-Baxter matrices. We describe the beginnings of a systematic classification of those representations. Our analysis makes contact with the classification theory of subfactors initiated by Jones. We prove a general theorem on the connection between spin and statistics in theories with braid statistics. We also show that every theory with braid statistics gives rise to a “Verlinde algebra”. It determines a projective representation of SL(2, ℤ) and, presumably, of the mapping class group of any Riemann surface, even if the theory does not display conformal symmetry.

Projective symmetry group analysis of inelastic light scattering in Kitaev spin balls

Taku Kimura, Shoji Yamamoto

Projective symmetry groups are applied to Raman observations of the Kitaev quantum spin liquids in spherical lattice geometries realized by Platonic and Archimedean polyhedra. Parton single excitations in Kitaev spin polyhedra are characterized by double-valued irreducible representations of their belonging projective symmetry groups, whereas parton geminate excitations relevant to Raman scattering are decomposed into single-valued irreducible representations of the corresponding point symmetry groups. We combine a standard point symmetry group analysis of the Loudon-Fleury vertices and an elaborate projective symmetry group analysis of itinerant spinons against the ground gauge fields to reveal hidden selection rules for Raman scattering in ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin liquids.
