Theory of Superradiant Scattering of Laser Light from Bose-Einstein Condensates

M. G. Moore, Pierre Meystre

In a recent MIT experiment, a new form of superradiant Rayleigh scattering was observed in Bose-Einstein condensates. We present a detailed theory of this phenomenon in which condensate depletion leads to mode competition, which, together with the directional dependence of the scattering rate, is ultimately responsible for the observed phenomena. The nonlinear response of the system is shown to be highly sensitive to initial quantum fluctuations which cause large run to run variations in the observed superradiant pulses.

Nonlinear phenomena in Bose-Einstein Condensates

Luis Santos

For sufficiently low temperatures, a Bose gas experiences a transition into a Bose-Einstein condensate, characterized by a macroscopic occupation of the ground state of the system. The development of efficient cooling and trapping techniques for neutral atoms led in 1995, to the first observation of BEC in dilute alkali gases in 87Rb [1]. This remarkable achievement has been followed by BEC experiments in various other elements. The BEC has become during the last years, one of the most active and fruitful research areas of modern atomic physics, constituting an interdisciplinary field, which links atomic physics with various other research areas, like quantum optics, condensed-matter physics, and very especially nonlinear physics.

Nonlinear Tunneling Effect based on Quantum Operator Fluctuation

Shu Peng-l

The nonlinear tunneling effect of quantum operator fluctuation in Bose-Einstein condensation systems( BECs) is discnssed in this paper. Through calculating the time evolution about particles of BECs in symmetric double well potentials, the system has also shown Josephson-effect and self-tapping phenomena by means of introducing the quantum operator fluctuation. The conclusion not only considerably supplements the theory of nonlinear tunneling effect based on the mean-filed approximation and quantum description, but also provides a theoretical basis for the experiment of nonlinear tunneling in BECs.
