Common reducing unitary subspaces and decoherence in quantum systems

Abstract

Maps of the form Phi(X) =sum_{i=1}^s A_iXA^*, where A_1, . . . ,A_s are fixed complex n by n matrices and X is any complex n by n matrix are used in quantum information theory as representations of quantum channels. This article deals with computable conditions for the existence of decoherence--free subspaces for Phi. Since the definition of decoherence-free subspace for quantum channels relies only on the matrices A1, . . . ,As, the term of common reducing unitary subspace is used instead of the original one. Among the main results of the paper, there are computable conditions for the existence of common eigenvectors. These are related to common reducing unitary subspaces of dimension one. The new results on common eigenvectors provide new effective condition for the existence of common invariant subspaces of arbitrary dimensions.

Decoherence free subspaces for two--access quantum channels

Maciej Demianowicz

In this paper we consider construction of decoherence free subspaces for two--access random unitary channels. First, we concentrate on hermitian unitary noise model $U$ for a bi--unitary channel and show that in this case a code exists if the space of Schmidt matrices of an eigensubspace of $U$ exhibits certain properties of decomposability. Then, we show that our technique is also applicable in a generic case and consider its application two tri- (quatro-, ...) unitary channels.

Linear preservers and quantum information science

Ajda Fošner, Zejun Huang, Chi-Kwong Li +1 more

In this article, a brief survey of recent results on linear preserver problems and quantum information science is given. In addition, characterization is obtained for linear operators φ on mn × mn Hermitian matrices such that φ(A ⊗ B) and A ⊗ B have the same spectrum for any m × m Hermitian A and n × n Hermitian B. Such a map has the form A ⊗ B ↦ U(ϕ1(A) ⊗ ϕ2(B))U* for mn × mn Hermitian matrices in tensor form A ⊗ B, where U is a unitary matrix, and for j ∈ {1, 2}, ϕ j is the identity map X ↦ X or the transposition map X ↦ X t . The structure of linear maps leaving invariant the spectral radius of matrices in tensor form A ⊗ B is also obtained. The results are connected to bipartite (quantum) systems and are extended to multipartite systems.

Realistic Decoherence Free Subspaces

K. M. Fonseca-Romero, S. G. Mokarzel, Marcelo Terra Cunha +1 more

Decoherence free subspaces (DFS) is a theoretical tool towards experimental implementation of quantum information storage and processing. However, they represent an experimental challenge, since conditions for their existence are very stringent. This work explores the situation in which a system of $N$ oscillators coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators is close to satisfy the conditions for the existence of DFS. We show, in the Born-Markov limit and for small deviations from separability and degeneracy conditions, that there are {\emph{weak decoherence subspaces}} which resemble the original notion of DFS.

On the Structure of Quantum Linear Systems

Guofeng Zhang, Symeon Grivopoulos, Ian R. Petersen +1 more

The purpose of this paper is to characterize the structure of quantum linear systems. By means of a scattering representation, a relation between two systems $G$ and $\Sigma$ is established, by which we show that $G$ is lossless bounded real if and only if $\Sigma$ is lossless positive real. When $G$ is a quantum linear system, we show that its fundamental symplectic structure and physical realizability conditions can be expressed in a simpler way in terms of $\Sigma$. Furthermore, when $G$ is a passive quantum linear system, we show that its uncontrollable subspace and unobservable subspace are identical and they are spanned by the eigenvectors of the $A$ matrix of $G$, whose corresponding eigenvalues are all on the imaginary axis. For the nonpassive case, several sufficient conditions are given. Finally, in terms of controllability and observability, the problem of quantum linear system decomposition is investigated. In particular, a quantum Kalman decomposition is proposed. This canonical decomposition naturally exposes decoherence-free modes and quantum non-demolished modes, which are useful resources for quantum information science.

Control-assisted decoherence-free manifolds

EDMOND A. JONCKHEERE, Alireza Shabani, A. T. Rezakhani

Quantum coherence of open quantum systems is usually compromised because of the interaction with the ambient environment. A ¿decoherence-free subspace¿ (DFS) of the system Hilbert space is defined where the evolution remains unitary. In the absence of a priori existence of such subspaces, it seems natural that utilizing quantum control may help generate and/or retain a DFS. Here, we introduce a time-varying DFS wherein the system's density matrix has a unitarily evolving sub-density corresponding to some given set of its eigenvalues (which we aim to preserve). This subspace is characterized from both topological and algebraic perspectives. In particular, we show that this DFS admits a complex vector bundle structure over a real-analytic manifold (the decoherence-free manifold).
