Control of spontaneous emission of qubits from weak to strong coupling

Wai‐Keong Mok, Jia-Bin You, Wenzu Zhang +2 more

Photon emission and absorption by an individual qubit are essential elements for the quantum manipulation of light. Here we demonstrate the controllability of spontaneous emission of a qubit in various electromagnetic environments. The parameter regimes that allow for flexible control of the qubit emission routes are comprehensively discussed. By properly tuning the system couplings and decay rates, the spontaneous emission rate of the qubit can undergo Purcell enhancement and inhibition. In particular, when the cavity is prepared in the excited state, the spontaneous emission rate of the qubit can be significantly suppressed. We also demonstrate a spectral filter effect which can be realized by controlling the steady-state emission spectra of qubits.

Quenching of spontaneous emission through interference of incoherent pump processes

Kishore T. Kapale, Marlan O. Scully, Shi-Yao Zhu +1 more

We investigate the steady-state spontaneous emission of a V-type three-level atom, with the coherence between the two upper levels modified and controlled via incoherent pumping to a fourth auxiliary level. The external pumping gives us an easily controllable handle in manipulating the spontaneous emission to such an extent that, under certain conditions, complete quenching of spontaneous emission is possible. We also show that even the interference between the decay channels, which is considered a key requirement in spontaneous emission quenching through quantum interference, is not essential to achieve near 100% trapping and almost complete suppression of spontaneous emission. Thus we provide a scheme for spontaneous emission quenching which can be easily realized experimentally.

Coherent control of spontaneous emission in a four-level system

Emmanuel Paspalakis, P. L. Knight

In this article we study the potential for coherently control spontaneous emission in a four-level scheme. Our control parameter is the relative phase of two laser fields having the same angular frequency. We investigate in detail the trapping conditions, the population dynamics and the behaviour of the (long time) spontaneous emission spectrum, which are now phase dependent. Inhibition of spontaneous emission and extreme spectral narrowing are shown as the relative phase is varied. Our results are interpreted using a dressed state analysis of the dynamics.
