On q-analogues of the quantum harmonic oscillator and the quantum group SU(2) q

Alan Macfarlane

The quantum group SU(2) q is discussed by a method analogous to that used by Schwinger to develop the quantum theory of angular momentum. Such theory of the q-analogue of the quantum harmonic oscillator, as is required for this purpose, is developed.

On the quantum theory of the damped harmonic oscillator

José M. Cerveró, Javier Villarroel

The longstanding problem of the physical interpretation of the one-dimensional quantum damped oscillator is analysed here from the viewpoint of group theory. It is shown how to transform the system into a quantum oscillator with variable frequency. However, the main features of the final system are rather those of a simple stationary oscillator with 'renormalised' constant frequency. The quantum mechanical system cannot be at all interpreted as a 'dissipative' quantum system as has been claimed by some authors.
