Relaxation oscillations and frequency entrainment in quantum mechanics

A. Chia, L. C. Kwek, Changsuk Noh

Frequency entrainment of continuous-variable oscillators has to date been restrained to the weakly nonlinear regime. Here we overcome this bottleneck and extend frequency entrainment of quantum continuous-variable oscillators to arbitrary nonlinearities. The previously known steady state of such quantum oscillators in the weakly nonlinear regime (also known as a Stuart-Landau oscillator) is shown to emerge as a special case. Most importantly, the hallmark of strong nonlinearity-relaxation oscillations-is shown in quantum mechanics. Depending on the oscillator's nonlinearity, relaxation oscillations are found to occur via two distinct mechanisms in phase space.

Moyal and tomographic probability representations for f-oscillator quantum states

Vladimir I. Man’ko, Giuseppe Marmo, F. Zaccaria

States of nonlinear quantum oscillators (f-oscillators) are considered in the Weyl–Wigner–Moyal representation and the tomographic probability representation, where the states are described by standard probability distributions instead of wave functions or density matrices. The evolving integrals of motion for classical and quantum f-oscillators are found and the solution for the Liouville equation associated with the probability distribution on the phase space for this oscillator is obtained along with the solution of the Moyal equation for the quantum f-oscillator, which provide solutions for the partial case of f-nonlinearity existing in Kerr media. Nonlinear coherent states and the thermodynamics of nonlinear oscillators are studied.

Quantum entanglement of anharmonic oscillators

Chaitanya S. Joshi, M. Jonson, Erika Andersson +1 more

We investigate the quantum entanglement dynamics of undriven anharmonic (nonlinear) oscillators with quartic potentials. We first consider the indirect interaction between two such nonlinear oscillators mediated by a third, linear oscillator and show that this leads to a time-varying entanglement of the oscillators, the entanglement being strongly influenced by the nonlinear oscillator dynamics. In the presence of dissipation, the role of nonlinearity is strongly manifested in the steady-state dynamics of the indirectly coupled anharmonic oscillators. We further illustrate the effect of nonlinearities by studying the coupling between an electromagnetic field in a cavity and one movable mirror which is modelled as a nonlinear oscillator. For this case, we present a full analytical treatment, which is valid in a regime where both the nonlinearity and the coupling due to radiation pressure are weak. We show that, without the need of any conditional measurements on the cavity field, the state of the movable mirror is non-classical as a result of the combined effect of the intrinsic nonlinearity and the radiation-pressure coupling. This interaction is also shown to be responsible for squeezing the movable mirror's position quadrature beyond the minimum uncertainty state even when the mirror is initially prepared in its ground state.
