Radiation-Field Quantization for Linear Dielectrics through Green’s Function Expansion

Abstract

The use of instruments in optical experiments needs careful examination with regard to their action on the quantum statistics of radiation. Instruments that respond linearly to radiation may be regarded as spatially structured dielectrics whose presence can be taken into consideration by quantizing the phenomenological Maxwell theory. Since radiation in dielectric matter undergoes dispersion and absorption, the losses must necessarily be included in a quantization scheme. This central problem can be solved by using a novel approach that is based on a Green’s function expansion of the radiation field in place of a mode expansion, which fails when the losses are taken into account. The theory is applied to calculate quantum-theoretically consistent inputoutput relations for dispersive and absorptive multi-slab dielectric plates. Assuming that the polarization field and the electric field are locally related to each other, the phenomenological Maxwell equations governing the propagation of radiation in linear dielectrics, without external sources, can be quantized by supplementing them by an appropriately chosen noise source associated with the losses in the dielectric matter. For the sake of transparency, let us consider a multi-slab dielectric plate with permittivity ε(x, ω) and restrict attention to radiation that propagates along the x axis and is polarized in z direction.

Quantum optical input--output relations for dispersive and lossy multi-slab dielectric plates

Toralf Gruner, D.‐G. Welsch

Using the Green function approach to the problem of quantization of the phenomenological Maxwell theory, the propagation of quantized radiation through dispersive and absorptive multilayer dielectric plates is studied. Input--output relations are derived, with special emphasis on the determination of the quantum noise generators associated with the absorption of radiation inside the dielectric matter. The input--output relations are used to express arbitrary correlation functions of the outgoing field in terms of correlation functions of the incoming field and those of the noise generators. To illustrate the theory, the effect of a single-slab plate on the mean photon-number densities in the frequency domain is discussed in more detail.

Green-function approach to the radiation-field quantization for homogeneous and inhomogeneous Kramers-Kronig dielectrics

Toralf Gruner, D.‐G. Welsch

A quantization scheme for the radiation field in dispersive and absorptive linear dielectrics is developed, which applies to both bulk material and multilayer dielectric structures. Starting from the phenomenological Maxwell equations, where the properties of the dielectric are described by a permittivity consistent with the Kramers-Kronig relations, an expansion of the field operators is performed that is based on the Green function of the classical Maxwell equations and preserves the equal-time canonical field commutation relations. In particular, in frequency intervals with approximately vanishing absorption the concept of quantization through mode expansion for dispersive dielectrics is recognized. The theory further reveals that weak absorption gives rise to space-dependent mode operators that spatially evolve according to quantum Langevin equations in the space domain. To illustrate the applicability of the theory to inhomogeneous structures, the quantization of the radiation field in a dispersive and absorptive one-interface dielectric is performed. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Quantum theory of light in a dispersive structured linear dielectric: a macroscopic Hamiltonian tutorial treatment

Michael G. Raymer

These notes, intended to be self contained and tutorial, present a direct, macroscopic approach to quantizing light inside a linear-response dielectric material when both spectral dispersion and spatial nonuniformity are present, but the spectral region of interest is optically transparent so that explicit treatment of the underlying physics of the medium is not needed. The approach taken is based on the macroscopic Maxwell equations and a corresponding Hamiltonian, without the use of Lagrangians or any dynamical model for the medium, and uses a standard mode-based quantization method. The treatment covers: energy density and flux in a dispersive dielectric; a summary of the inverse permittivity formalism; a new derivation of the mode normalization condition; a direct proof of the nonorthogonality of the modes; examples of quantized field expressions for the general case and various special cases; the relationship between group velocity and energy flux; the band approximation and the continuum limit; and quantum optical treatment of waveguide modes.

Mode expansion and photon operators in dispersive and absorbing dielectrics

Omar Di Stefano, Salvatore Savasta, R. Girlanda

We present a one-dimensional quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field in arbitrary planar absorbing and dispersive dielectrics, taking into account explicitly the finite extent of media. The complete form of the electric field operator includes a part that corresponds to the free fields incident from the vacuum towards the medium and a particular solution which can be expressed by using the classical Green-function integral representation of the electromagnetic field. By expressing the classical Green function in terms of the light modes of the dielectric structure, we obtain a natural generalization to absorbing media of the familiar method of mode expansion which strictly applies to non-absorbing media. As an application of our mode expansion, we obtain general quantum-optical input-output relations relating the output photon operators in vacuum to the input photon operators and to the reservoir noise operators. The input-output relations obtained are uniquely determined by the knowledge of the classical light modes of the planar system. We finally show that our quantization scheme for arbitrary planar dielectrics satisfies the prescribed equal-time commutation relations of QED.

Three-dimensional quantization of the electromagnetic field in dispersive and absorbing inhomogeneous dielectrics

Ho Trung Dung, L. Knöll, Dirk‐Gunnar Welsch

A quantization scheme for the phenomenological Maxwell theory of the full electromagnetic field in an inhomogeneous three-dimensional, dispersive, and absorbing dielectric medium is developed. The classical Maxwell equations with spatially varying and Kramers-Kronig consistent permittivity are regarded as operator-valued field equations, introducing additional current- and charge-density operator fields in order to take into account the noise associated with the dissipation in the medium. It is shown that the equal-time commutation relations between the fundamental electromagnetic fields $\mathbf{E}^$ and $\mathbf{B}^$ and the potentials $\mathbf{A}^$ and $\stackrel{^}{\ensuremath{\varphi}}$ in the Coulomb gauge can be expressed in terms of the Green tensor of the classical problem. From the Green tensors for bulk material and an inhomogeneous medium consisting of two bulk dielectrics with a common planar interface it is explicitly proven that the well-known equal-time commutation relations of QED are preserved.
