A Preliminary Study on Some Properties of the Cumulant-Based Quantum Relative Rényi Functional

Abstract

Abstract In quantum information theory, the quantum relative Rényi functional is a generalisation of quantum relative entropy that quantifies the difference between two quantum states. We study a new type of quantum relative Rényi functional, motivated by the concepts of the cumulant-generating function and quantum surprisal difference, and propose an information-theoretic interpretation of the Rényi parameter. In addition, we demonstrate that this functional can be naturally expressed in a path-integral-like formulation, providing a distinct perspective compared to existing approaches. To support the viability of our proposal, we conduct a preliminary numerical study of its key properties for qubits and qutrits. These properties include the monotonicity in the Rényi parameter (α) and the quantum data-processing inequality (QDPI).

Cumulant-based quantum relative Rényi functional

Atirat Meunson, Tanapat Deesuwan

We introduce a new cumulant-based quantum relative Rényi functional as a candidate quantum Rényi divergence, derived from the cumulant-generating function (CGF) of the quantum relative surprisal operator and extending the classical connection between Rényi divergence and statistical cumulants to the quantum setting. Unlike the Petz and sandwiched quantum Rényi divergences, the proposed construction is motivated by statistical structure rather than operator-algebraic or operational principles. The functional naturally admits a path-integral-like representation through the Lie-Trotter product expansion, providing a trajectory-based interpretation of quantum divergence in Hilbert space. On its natural non-regularized domain for $α>1$ under the support condition $\operatorname{supp}(ρ)\subseteq\operatorname{supp}(σ)$, we establish several fundamental properties, including positivity, reduction to the classical case, additivity, unitary invariance, continuity, and monotonicity with respect to the Renyi parameter $α$. Whether the functional satisfies the quantum data-processing inequality (QDPI) under arbitrary CPTP maps remains open. To extend the analysis beyond the studied regime, we introduce a regularized version of the functional and study its behavior at $α=0$. We show that the resulting relative quantumness quantity vanishes if and only if the underlying states commute, yielding a necessary and sufficient characterization of non-commutativity. For commutativity-preserving (CoP) channels, we further conjecture a QDPI-type monotonicity relation for this quantity. Extensive numerical simulations provide strong evidence in support of this conjecture, with no violations observed for the CoP channels considered in this work.

α - z -Rényi relative entropies

Koenraad M. R. Audenaert, Nilanjana Datta

We consider a two-parameter family of Rényi relative entropies Dα,z(ρ ∥ σ) that are quantum generalisations of the classical Rényi divergence Dα(p ∥ q). This family includes many known relative entropies (or divergences) such as the quantum relative entropy, the recently defined quantum Rényi divergences, as well as the quantum Rényi relative entropies. All its members satisfy the quantum generalizations of Rényi’s axioms for a divergence. We consider the range of the parameters α, z for which the data-processing inequality holds. We also investigate a variety of limiting cases for the two parameters, obtaining explicit formulas for each one of them.

Quantum Coherence Quantifiers Based on Rényi α -Relative Entropy*

Lian-He 连合 Shao 邵, Yong-Ming 永明 Li 李, Yu 宇 Luo 罗 +1 more

Abstract The resource theories of quantum coherence attract a lot of attention in recent years. Especially, the monotonicity property plays a crucial role here. In this paper we investigate the monotonicity property for the coherence measures induced by the Rényi α-relative entropy, which present in [Phys. Rev. A 94 (2016) 052336]. We show that the Rényi α-relative entropy of coherence does not in general satisfy the monotonicity requirement under the subselection of measurements condition and it also does not satisfy the extension of monotonicity requirement, which presents in [Phys. Rev. A 93 (2016) 032136]. Due to the Rényi α-relative entropy of coherence can act as a coherence monotone quantifier, we examine the trade-off relations between coherence and mixedness. Finally, some properties for the single qubit of Rényi 2-relative entropy of coherence are derived .

A limit of the quantum Rényi divergence

Nilanjana Datta, Felix Leditzky

Recently, an interesting quantity called the quantum Rényi divergence (or 'sandwiched' Rényi relative entropy) was defined for pairs of positive semi-definite operators ρ and σ. It depends on a parameter α and acts as a parent quantity for other relative entropies which have important operational significance in quantum information theory: the quantum relative entropy and the min- and max-relative entropies. There is, however, another relative entropy, called the 0-relative Rényi entropy, which plays a key role in the analysis of various quantum information-processing tasks in the one-shot setting. We prove that the 0-relative Rényi entropy is obtainable from the quantum Rényi divergence only if ρ and σ have equal supports. This, along with existing results in the literature, suggests that it suffices to consider two essential parent quantities from which operationally relevant entropic quantities can be derived—the quantum Rényi divergence with parameter α ⩾ 1/2, and the α-relative Rényi entropy with α ∈ [0, 1).

Inequalities for quantum divergences and the Audenaert–Datta conjecture

Eric A. Carlen, Rupert L. Frank, Élliott H. Lieb

Abstract Given two density matrices ρ and σ , there are a number of different expressions that reduce to the α -Rényi relative entropy of ρ with respect to σ in the classical case; i.e. when ρ and σ commute. Only those expressions for which the data processing inequality (DPI) is valid are of potential interest as quantum divergences in quantum information theory. Audenaert and Datta have made a conjecture on the validity of the DPI for an interesting family of quantum generalizations of the α -Rényi relative entropies, the -Rényi relative entropies. They and others have contributed to the partial solution of this conjecture. We review the problem, its context, and the methods that have been used to obtain the results that are known at present, presenting a unified treatment of developments that have unfolded in a number of different papers.

Quantum Fisher information matrices from Rényi relative entropies

Mark M. Wilde

Quantum generalizations of the Fisher information are important in quantum information science, with applications in high energy and condensed matter physics and in quantum estimation theory, machine learning, and optimization. One can derive a quantum generalization of the Fisher information matrix in a natural way as the Hessian matrix arising in a Taylor expansion of a smooth divergence. Such an approach is appealing for quantum information theorists, given the ubiquity of divergences in quantum information theory. In contrast to the classical case, there is not a unique quantum generalization of the Fisher information matrix, similar to how there is not a unique quantum generalization of the relative entropy or the Rényi relative entropy. In this paper, I derive information matrices arising from the log-Euclidean, $α$-$z$, and geometric Rényi relative entropies, with the main technical tool for doing so being the method of divided differences for calculating matrix derivatives. Interestingly, for all non-negative values of the Rényi parameter $α$, the log-Euclidean Rényi relative entropy leads to the Kubo-Mori information matrix, and the geometric Rényi relative entropy leads to the right-logarithmic derivative Fisher information matrix. Thus, the resulting information matrices obey the data-processing inequality for all non-negative values of the Rényi parameter $α$ even though the original quantities do not. Additionally, I derive and establish basic properties of $α$-$z$ information matrices resulting from the $α$-$z$ Rényi relative entropies. For parameterized thermal states and time-evolved states, I establish formulas for their $α$-$z$ information matrices and hybrid quantum-classical algorithms for estimating them, with applications in quantum Boltzmann machine learning.
