Abstract

This work demonstrates successful QKD/5G service coexistence over deployed X-Haul infrastructure, sharing$10 ~\text{Gb} / \mathrm{s}$classical data and raw click rates of 4.3 kbps and 51.9 kbps over 22.6 km backhaul and 2.2 km fronthaul fiber links. ©2025 The Author(s)

5G X-haul/QKD Multiplexing over Deployed Infrastructure

Aristeidis Stathis, Argiris Ntanos, Panagiotis Kourelias +4 more

With the rise of 5G X-haul networks and emerging infrastructure segments, efficient multiplexing is essential for enabling secure quantum communication alongside classical data. In this work, we present a polarization-encoded Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) system deployed within the C-band over a live 5G network in Athens, demonstrating coexistence of QKD and 5G services on shared infrastructure. Our setup enables simultaneous transmission of 10 Gb/s classical data and QKD raw click rates of 4.3 kbps (22.6 km backhaul) and 51.9 kbps (2.2 km fronthaul). We propose a novel multiplexing approach using high-isolation, commercial-off- the-shelf (COTS) fiber filters and multiplexers, requiring no changes to existing infrastructure. The system achieves Quantum Bit Error Rates (QBER) below 1.5% and expected Secret Key Rates (SKR) of 650 bps and 11.3 kbps for backhaul and fronthaul, respectively, while maintaining uninterrupted 5G performance. This work offers a practical and scalable path for integrating QKD into future quantum-secured mobile networks.

We reported a field trial of a dynamic QKD-protected optical network for O-RAN fronthaul with FPGA-based encryption. The coexistence of quantum and classical channels is enabled on deployed fibres with 609.05ns latency for one-way frame encryption and 2 kbps of key rate.

Deployment-Oriented Classical/Quantum coexistence in X-haul fiber link for B5G Networks

Coexistence of weak coherent pulses and intense light is experimentally demonstrated in a practical 5G X-haul scenario. Acceptable QBER measurements were obtained over 5 km fiber transmission by optimizing the parameters of single-photon sender/receiver stations.

Coexistence of classical and polarization-encoded QKD signals over deployed fiber

N. Linale, Adrià Sansa Perna, Ignacio H. López Grande +2 more

We report the first long-term field test of a polarization-encoding QKD system in C-band coexistence with classical signals over the same standard optical fiber. The system combines a self-stable polarization transmitter with a polarization control unit that stabilizes the link based on quantum metrics. This enables robust QKD operation over a metropolitan fiber link for several days, without requiring knowledge or control of the classical channels. The system can produce positive secret key rates of 422 kbps while coexisting with 0.7 mW classical power along a 50-km deployed link, achieving more than 98% uptime in the quantum channel.
