An effective, long-lasting, low-energy source of negatively charged ions was designed, constructed, and tested. The source uses electron dissociative attachment in electron-molecule collisions to form a set of anions inside a linear Paul trap. Iodine I 2 molecules were used to obtain pure sets of I − anions. The system was tested, providing about 1 0 5 ions produced in less than a minute, which can be stored in the trap and used in further experiments.

The combined trap and some possible applications

We investigate the properties of a radiofrequency (Paul)-trap with a super-imposed magnetic field (combined trap). The regions of stability are significantly larger than those for a Paul-trap for both positive and negative charged ions. As a result ions of different charge sign and large mass difference can be confined simultaneously. This may have some advantages for electron cooling of highly charged ions or for the formation of anti-hydrogen from simultaneously stored positrons and antiprotons.

Space-Charge Shift in Motional Resonance of Ca+ Induced by Simultaneously Trapped Molecular Ions in Linear Paul Trap

K. Okada, M. Wada, Takashi Nakamura +3 more

The space-charge shift in secular motion resonance of Ca + induced by simultaneously trapped molecular ions was observed through the laser-induced fluorescence of buffer-gas-cooled Ca + ions in a linear Paul trap. The shift in the resonance was measured as a function of the production time of molecular ions. A simple pseudopotential model was developed to explain the space-charge shift and the number of trapped molecular ions was estimated using the model. The method can be used to monitor the total amount of invisible ions in principle, as long as the weak coupling condition is satisfied between the observable ions and the invisible ions.
