Abstract

High-dimensional hyperentangled states, serving as crucial physical resources in quantum communication, have attracted significant attention due to their exceptional properties (e.g., higher information density) compared to conventional two-dimensional single-degree-of-freedom entanglement. However, practical quantum entanglement systems inevitably suffer from environmental interactions, resulting in their degradation into partially entangled pure states or even mixed states, thereby significantly compromising the efficiency and security of quantum communication. Consequently, improving entanglement preservation in noisy systems emerges as a pivotal challenge in realizing fault-tolerant quantum networks. We propose two universal distillation schemes based on local positive-operator-valued measures (POVMs) for single-copy $(2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4)$-dimensional hyperentangled photons. These schemes effectively suppress photon vacuum errors induced by transmission losses and are constructed using spatial-mode and polarization-based POVM measurements, respectively. Our results demonstrate that the spatial-mode-based scheme outperforms its polarization-based counterpart in terms of fidelity and success probability. Remarkably, we discover that with appropriate POVM parameters, the fidelity range of amplitude-damped noisy states can be expanded to cover almost all parameter spaces. Due to the universal applicability of POVM measurements, which require neither auxiliary entanglement nor complex detectors and operate on single copies of imperfect states in each purification round, our scheme provides an experimentally feasible solution for distilling high-dimensional hyperentangled photonic states.

Distillation of lossy hyperentangled states

Danyang Chen, Zhi Lin, Ming Yang +3 more

Hyperentanglement has a higher information density than conventional single-degree-of-freedom entanglement, which has attracted much attention due to its fascinating applications in quantum communication. However, since the inevitable interactions between quantum entangled systems and the environment will drive hyperentangled systems into less hyperentangled states or even mixed hyperentangled states, the efficiency and security of quantum communication will be greatly depressed. The currently existing distillation protocols are not universal, i.e., they only work for the lossy hyperentangled states in specific systems. In this paper, based on local positive-operator-valued measures (POVMs), we present a distillation protocol for lossy hyperentangled photonic Bell and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states. The intrinsic property of our protocol is twofold, i.e., the POVM nature of the protocol guarantees that the protocol is a universal one, and the distillation operation on only one of the two degrees of freedom (DOFs) can enhance the fidelity of the system in both DOFs. Furthermore, in the implementation level, our hyperentanglement distillation protocol (HEDP) has other two merits: no auxiliary local entanglement resources and sophisticated single-photon detectors are required, and only one copy of the lossy state will be operated in each distillation round, which show that our HEDPs are relatively simple and feasible.

Single-copy-based hyperentanglement purification using high-dimensional positive-operator-valued measures

Peng Wang, Zihao Wei, Zhe Yang +3 more

Hyperentanglement can enlarge the information capacity of quantum information processes, but its quality will be decreased by environment noise. Here, we present a single-copy-based hyperentanglement purification protocol (HEPP) to improve the quality of the polarization-spatial hyperentangled photon state suffering from amplitude-damping noise. By using the local high-dimensional positive-operator-valued measure, a high-quality hyperentangled photon state can be purified from one copy of a noisy hyperentangled state without being destroyed, where only linear optical elements are required. Compared with the previous multicopy-based HEPPs, this single-copy-based HEPP can rapidly increase the fidelity of the noisy hyperentangled state with considerable success probability using fewer entanglement resources and it can extend the scope of application to a wider fidelity range of noisy hyperentangled states. Hence this work will have extensive applications in quantum information technology.

Hyperentanglement-assisted hyperdistillation for hyper-encoding photon system

Peng Wang, Chang‐Qi Yu, Zi-Xu Wang +3 more

In quantum information processing, the quality of photon system is decreased by the inevitable interaction with environment, which will greatly reduce the efficiency and security of quantum information processing. In this paper, we propose hyperentanglement-assisted hyperdistillation schemes to guarantee the quality of hyper-encoding photon system based on the method of quantum hyper-teleportation, which can increase the success probability of hyperdistillation and reduce the resource consumption. First, we propose a hyperentanglement-assisted single-photon hyperdistillation (HASPHD) scheme for polarization and spatial qubits to get rid of the vacuum state component caused by transmission loss, whose success probability can achieve the optimal one by increasing the efficiency of quantum hyper-teleportation. Subsequently, we present two hyperentanglement-assisted hyperentanglement distillation (HAHED) schemes for photon system to protect hyperentanglement from both transmission loss and quantum channel noise, which can recover the less-entangled mixed state to maximally hyperentangled state for known-parameter and unknown-parameter cases with high success probability and low resource consumption. In these hyperdistillation schemes, the influence of imperfect effects of optical elements can be largely decreased by the quantum hyper-teleportation method. These characters make the hyperentanglement-assisted hyperdistillation schemes have potential application prospects in practical quantum information processing.

Arbitrary high-dimensional entanglement purification with the superposition of paths

Zi-Han Zheng, Wen-Qiang Liu, Chen-Ming Bai +1 more

High-dimensional quantum entanglement offers significant advantages over its two-dimensional counterparts in various quantum information processing tasks. We propose a scalable method for implementing an arbitrary high-dimensional entanglement purification protocol (HDEPP) using path superposition. By selecting appropriate single-qudit gates, qudit-flip errors and phase-flip errors can be purified. Counterintuitively, the HDEPP becomes more robust for higher-dimensional systems and exhibits enhanced purification fidelity as the dimension increases. Our HDEPP not only requires fewer operational resources but also in principle can achieve unity fidelity through multiple rounds of iteration. Furthermore, we develop feasible optical schemes to purify the frequency degree of freedom of photons suffering from qudit-flip and phase-flip errors using hyperentanglement. This work paves the way toward high-dimensional quantum communication and quantum networks.

Entanglement Distillation Based on Polarization and Frequency Hyperentanglement

Dan Xu, Changjia Chen, Brian T. Kirby +1 more

Entanglement distillation has many applications in quantum information processing and is an important tool for improving the quality and efficiency of quantum communication, cryptography, computing, and simulation. We propose an entanglement distillation scheme using only one pair of polarization-frequency hyperentangled photons, which can be equivalently viewed as containing two pairs of entangled logical qubits: a pair of polarization-entangled qubits and a pair of frequency-entangled qubits. To perform the required CNOT operation between the two qubits we consider the use of a polarization-dependent frequency converter. Compared to past methods of entanglement distillation that relied on polarization and spatial-mode/energy-time degree of freedom, the utilization of frequency-encoded qubits offers an advantage in that it is immune to bit-flip errors when the channel is linear. After distillation, the fidelity of polarization entanglement can be significantly improved by sacrificing the frequency degree of freedom. Through simulation, we show that high fidelity gains, large yield, and high distillation rate can be achieved. Our distillation scheme is simple to implement with current technologies, compatible with existing telecommunication fiber networks, and is a promising approach for achieving efficient quantum communication.

High-efficient two-step entanglement purification using hyperentanglement

Lan Zhou, Yu‐Bo Sheng

Entanglement purification is a powerful method to distill the high-quality entanglement from low-quality entanglement. In the paper, we propose an efficient two-step entanglement purification protocol (EPP) for the polarization entanglement by using only one copy of two-photon hyperentangled state in polarization, spatial-mode, and time-bin DOFs. We suppose that the entanglement in all DOFs suffer from channel noise. In two purification steps, the parties can reduce the bit-flip error and phase-flip error in polarization DOF by consuming the imperfect entanglement in the spatial-mode and time-bin DOFs, respectively. This EPP effectively reduces the consumption of entanglement pairs and the experimental difficulty. Moreover, if consider the practical photon transmission and detector efficiencies, our EPP has much higher purification efficiency than previous recurrence EPPs. Meanwhile, when one or two purification steps fail, the distilled mixed state may have residual entanglement. Taking use of the residual entanglement, the parties may still distill higher-quality polarization entanglement. Even if not, they can still reuse the residual entanglement in the next purification round. The existence of residual entanglement benefits for increasing the yield of the EPP. All the above advantages make our EPP have potential application in future quantum information processing.
