Abstract

${\mathrm{Na}}_{2}{\mathrm{Co}}_{2}{\mathrm{TeO}}_{6}$ has been proposed as a candidate for realizing the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). Its intriguing magnetic properties have motivated extensive investigations into its ground state and spin excitation spectrum. A central question concerns whether an in-plane magnetic field can stabilize a QSL state with fractionalized excitations prior to full spin polarization. Using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy, we systematically study the magnetic excitations in ${\mathrm{Na}}_{2}{\mathrm{Co}}_{2}{\mathrm{TeO}}_{6}$ within the field-induced intermediate state regime (6 T $<B<$ 10 T). At 5 K, we observe a broad excitation feature superimposed on multiple sharp modes corresponding to magnons. Field-dependent measurements reveal that both the sharp modes and the continuum exhibit magnetic dipole activity. However, their temperature evolution is different. Temperature-dependent measurements at 10 T demonstrate that the sharp modes disappear abruptly near 15 K, consistent with the expected phase boundary. Conversely, the continuum intensity maximizes at this temperature and persists up to at least 40 K. The survival of the broad excitation continuum above the ordering temperature suggests strong spin correlations and quantum fluctuations in this regime.

Disorder-enriched magnetic excitations in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

Li Xiang, Ramesh Dhakal, Mykhaylo Ozerov +9 more

Using optical magneto-spectroscopy, we investigate the magnetic excitations of Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ in a broad magnetic field range ($0\ \rm{T}\leq B\leq 17.5\ \rm{T}$) at low temperature. Our measurements reveal rich spectra of in-plane magnetic excitations with a surprisingly large number of modes, even in the high-field spin-polarized state. Theoretical calculations find that the Na-occupation disorder in \NCTO plays a crucial role in generating these modes. Our work demonstrates the necessity to consider disorder in the spin environment in the search for Kitaev quantum spin liquid states in practicable materials.

Kitaev-derived spin liquid in the frustrated quantum magnet Na2Co2TeO6

Han Li, Xu-Guang Zhou, Gang Su +1 more

Abstract The pursuit of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) predicted by the Kitaev honeycomb model remains a central yet challenging goal in quantum magnetism. Realistic candidate materials inevitably host non-Kitaev interactions that often lead to antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at low temperature. While magnetic fields can suppress such AFM order and may stabilize a QSL phase, conclusive evidence for a field-induced Kitaev QSL has remained elusive despite a decade of research. Here, we establish an effective K - J -Γ- $${\Gamma }^{{\prime} }$$ Γ ′ model with a dominant AFM Kitaev interaction for Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 , which quantitatively explains its key experimental measurements. Using high-precision tensor-network calculations, we reveal a QSL phase under intermediate [111] magnetic fields, which is possibly gapless, and find it can be adiabatically connected to the intensively studied intermediate-field QSL in the pure AFM Kitaev model. This correspondence confirms that the Kitaev model as the origin of the intermediate-field QSL in cobalt-based magnet Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 , thus offering a concrete platform for exploring Kitaev-derived QSL in realistic materials.

Intermediate Field Spin(on) Dynamics in $α$-RuCl$_3$

Colin L. Sarkis, K. D. Dixit, P Raghuveer Rao +11 more

We present comprehensive inelastic neutron spectroscopic maps of the magnetic field-induced disordered phase of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate material $α$-RuCl$_3$. For fields along both in-plane high-symmetry directions we observe that the spin excitation spectrum at and above a magnetic field of 8~T is gapped. Excitation modes then sharpen for increasing field but are consistently broader than experimental resolution even at 13.5~T. The out-of-plane dispersion diminishes in the 7-10~T regime, signifying enhanced two-dimensional behavior as the in-plane liquid correlations are established. In this regime, excitations are very broad and largely flat for all accessible energy-momenta, which is kinematically at odds with a magnon-decay picture. By contrast, a continuum of fractionalized excitations naturally yields a broad continuum response, which crucially may be accompanied by sharper modes of bound states of fractionalized excitations. Their damping by the continuum accounts for the observed spectral broadening and field dependence. Our results provide strong evidence for the existence of fractionalized excitations in $α$-RuCl$_3$ in a magnetic field.

Kitaev-derived Gapless Spin Liquid in the $K$-$J$-$Γ$-$Γ'$ Quantum Magnet Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

Li Han, Xu-Guang Zhou, Gang Su +1 more

The realization of quantum spin liquids (QSLs) in Kitaev magnets represents an intriguing topic in frustrated quantum magnetism. Despite prediction in the pure Kitaev honeycomb model, realization of QSLs in realistic systems and materials remain scarce. The recent discovery of cobalt-based compound Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ has raised significant research interest. By establishing a realistic $K$-$J$-$Γ$-$Γ'$ model for Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ -- with a dominant antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev interaction ($K>0$) that quantitatively explains its thermodynamics measurements -- we reveal an intermediate gapless QSL phase under [111] magnetic fields with tensor-network calculations. We confirm the QSL nature of this phase by demonstrating its adiabatic connection to the intensively studied intermediate QSL of the pure AFM Kitaev model under out-of-plane fields. Our results show excellent agreement with recent high-field experiments, thereby explaining the intermediate-field phase in Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$. These findings bridge the gap between theoretical proposals for a Kitaev-derived QSL and experimental realization, opening new avenues for exploring exotic quantum states of matter in realistic Kitaev materials.

In- and out-of-plane field induced quantum spin-liquid states in a more ideal Kitaev material: BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$

Xinshu Zhang, Yuanyuan Xu, Ruidan Zhong +3 more

Kitaev quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are exotic states of matter that are predicted to host Majorana fermions and gauge flux excitations. However, so far all known Kitaev QSL candidates are known to have appreciable non-Kitaev interactions that pushes these systems far from the QSL regime. Using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy (TDTS) we show that the honeycomb cobalt-based Kitaev QSL candidate, BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$, has dominant Kitaev interactions. Due to only small non-Kitaev terms a magnetic continuum consistent with Majorana fermions and the existence of a Kitaev QSL can be induced by a small 4 T out-of-plane-magnetic field. Applying an even smaller in-plane magnetic field $\sim$ 0.5 T suppresses the effects of the non-Kitaev interactions and gives rise to a field induced intermediate state also consistent with a QSL. These results may have fundamental impact for realizing quantum computation. Our results demonstrate BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ as a far more ideal version of Kitaev QSL compared with other candidates.
