Abstract

We introduce a numerical method to solve the two-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation, which characterizes a system of two atoms with a finite-range interaction potential confined within a harmonic oscillator trap. We choose a Gaussian-shaped potential for the interaction potential. Such a system has been previously studied analytically, except that a zero-range interaction potential was used instead. We observe a strong agreement between the results for the two types of interactions. Also, we investigate the one-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the relative motion and compute the ground state energy level as a function of the coupling strength.

Description of ultracold atoms in a one-dimensional geometry of a harmonic trap with a realistic interaction

I. S. Ishmukhamedov, D. S. Valiolda, S. A. Zhaugasheva

We compute the ground-state energy of two atoms in a one-dimensional geometry of a harmonic optical trap. We obtain a dependence of the energy on a one-dimensional scattering length, which corre-sponds to various strengths of the interaction potential V int (x) = V 0 exp {−2cx 2}. The calculation is performed by numerical and analytical methods. For the analytical method we choose the oscillator representation method (OR), which has been successfully applied to computations of bound states of various few-body systems. The main results of this paper are (1) a numerical investigation of the validity range of the previously used pseudopotential method and (2) an investigation of the validity range of the OR for the potential V(x) = V conf (x) + V int (x) = x 2/2 + V 0 exp {−2cx 2}.

Two-body atomic system in a one-dimensional anharmonic trap: The energy spectrum

I. S. Ishmukhamedov, D. Aznabayev, S. A. Zhaugasheva

We numerically investigate the following two-body stationary Schrödinger equation (SE): $$\left\{ { - \frac{{{{\rlap{--} h}^2}}}{{2m}}\frac{\partial }{{x_1^2}} - \frac{{{{\rlap{--} h}^2}}}{{2m}}\frac{\partial }{{x_2^2}} + V\left( {{x_2}} \right) + g\partial \left( {{x_1} - {x_2}} \right)} \right\}x\Psi \left( {{x_1},{x_2}} \right) = E\Psi \left( {{x_1},{x_2}} \right),$$ where $${x_1},{x_2} \in \mathbb{R},V\left( {{x_1}} \right) = {V_0}{\sin ^2}\left( {{k_x}{x_i}} \right)$$ is the potential describing the interaction of atoms with a trap and gδ(x 1–x 2) is the interatomic potential. Previously, a similar problem has been solved analytically for the harmonic interaction $${V_h}\left( {{x_i}} \right) = \frac{1}{2}m\omega x_i^2$$ with the trap, which leads to the separation of coordinates $$y = \frac{{{x_1} + {x_2}}}{{\sqrt 2 }},{\kern 1pt} x = \frac{{{x_1} - {x_2}}}{{\sqrt 2 }}$$ for the center-of-mass and relative motion. The anharmonicity of the trap couples these motions and, there-fore, the problem becomes significantly more complicated. In previous works, the anharmonicity V a = V–V h of the trap has been taken into account in the framework of perturbation theory. In this work, the energy level shifts of a two-body atomic system are calculated beyond the perturbation theory for different magnitudes of parameter g of the interatomic interaction. The results are compared to those computed using the perturbation theory.

Analytical Solutions for the Two-Dimensional Gross—Pitaevskii Equation with a Harmonic Trap

Yu-Ren Shi, Xue-Ling Wang, Guanghui Wang +2 more

Both the homotopy analysis method and Galerkin spectral method are applied to find the analytical solutions of the two-dimensional and time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, a nonlinear Schrödinger equation used in describing the system of Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a harmonic potential. The approximate analytical solutions are obtained successfully. Comparisons between the analytical solutions and the numerical solutions have been made. The results indicate that they are agreement very well with each other when the atomic interaction is not too strong.

Two trapped particles interacting by a finite-range two-body potential in two spatial dimensions

Rostislav A. Doganov, Shachar Klaiman, Ofir E. Alon +2 more

We examine the problem of two particles confined in an isotropic harmonic trap, which interact via a finite-range Gaussian-shaped potential in two spatial dimensions. We derive an approximative transcendental equation for the energy and study the resulting spectrum as a function of the interparticle interaction strength. Both the attractive and repulsive systems are analyzed. We study the impact of the potential's range on the ground-state energy. We also explicitly verify by a variational treatment that in the zero-range limit the positive $\ensuremath{\delta}$ potential in two dimensions only reproduces the noninteracting results, if the Hilbert space in not truncated, and demonstrate that an extremely large Hilbert space is required to approach the ground state when one is to tackle the limit of zero-range interaction numerically. Finally, we establish and discuss the connection between our finite-range treatment and regularized zero-range results from the literature. The present results indicate that a finite-range interparticle potential is numerically amenable for treating the statics and the nonequilibrium dynamics of interacting many-particle systems (bosons) in two dimensions.

Time-dependent solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation for Bose-condensed trapped neutral atoms

P. A. Ruprecht, Murray Holland, Keith R. Burnett +1 more

We present numerical results from solving the time-dependent nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE) that describes an inhomogeneous, weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in a small harmonic trap potential at zero temperature. With this method we are able to find solutions for the NLSE for ground state condensate wave functions in one dimension or in three dimensions with spherical symmetry. These solutions corroborate previous ground state results obtained from the solution of the time-independent NLSE. Furthrmore, we can examine the time evolution of the macroscopic wave function even when the trap potential is changed on a time scale comparable to that of the condensate dynamics, a situation that can be easily achieved in magneto-optical traps. We show that there are stable solutions for atomic species with both positive and negative s-wave scattering lengths in one-dimensional (1D) and 3D systems for a fixed number of atoms. In both the 1D and 3D cases, these negative scattering length solutions have solitonlike properties. In 3D, however, these solutions are only stable for a modest range of nonlinearities. We analyze the prospects for diagnosing Bose-Einstein condensation in a trap using several experiments that exploit the time-dependent behavior of the condensate.

Exact Time-Dependent Wave Functions of a Confined Time-Dependent Harmonic Oscillator with Two Moving Boundaries

Chi‐Fai Lo

By applying the standard analytical techniques of solving partial differential equations, we have obtained the exact solution in terms of the Fourier sine series to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation describing a quantum one-dimensional harmonic oscillator of time-dependent frequency confined in an infinite square well with the two walls moving along some parametric trajectories. Based upon the orthonormal basis of quasi-stationary wave functions, the exact propagator of the system has also been analytically derived. Special cases like (i) a confined free particle, (ii) a confined time-independent harmonic oscillator, and (iii) an aging oscillator are examined, and the corresponding time-dependent wave functions are explicitly determined. Besides, the approach has been extended to solve the case of a confined generalized time-dependent harmonic oscillator for some parametric moving boundaries as well.
