Abstract

This book presents a comprehensive treatment of quantum theory using theoretical variables as its foundation. The work progresses from fundamental quantum mechanical principles to sophisticated applications in quantum field theory and gravity. It provides rigorous mathematical frameworks while establishing connections between theoretical physics and practical engineering applications. Particularly suitable for graduate students and researchers in physics, mathematics, and engineering disciplines seeking to understand quantum phenomena across theoretical and applied domains. Presents an advanced treatment of quantum theory across two interconnected parts Examines Bell experiments, quantum probability, information theory, and connections to relativity Extends these foundations to explore quantum field theory, gravity, and noise theory Bridges the gap between theoretical physics and engineering applications Covers topics from Yang-Mills fields, quantum gravity to neural networks and biomedical applications of quantum electrodynamics Addresses quantum measurement of gravitons, Hawking radiation, classical and quantum neural networks with practical examples Provides mathematical frameworks for understanding quantum phenomena in applied contexts This title has been co-published with Manakin Press. Quantum Mechanics

Ana Marı́a Cetto, Luis de la Peña

Offering a detailed account of the key concepts and mathematical apparatus of quantum mechanics, this textbook is an ideal companion to both undergraduate and graduate courses. The formal and practical aspects of the subject are explained clearly alongside examples of modern applications, providing students with the tools required to thoroughly understand the theory and apply it. The authors provide an intuitive conceptual framework that is grounded in a coherent physical explanation of quantum phenomena, established over decades of teaching and research in quantum mechanics and its foundations. The book's educational value is enhanced by the inclusion of examples and exercises, with solutions available online, and an extensive bibliography is provided. Notes throughout the text provide fascinating context on the tumultuous history of quantum mechanics, the people that developed it, and the questions that still remain at its center. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Quantum Mechanics

Harish Parthasarathy

This book covers the entire span of quantum mechanics whose developments have taken place during the early part of the twentieth century up till the present day. We start with the Rutherford-Bohr model of the atom followed by Schrodinger's wave mechanics with its application to the solution of calculating the energy spectrum of a particle in a box, the harmonic oscillator and finally the hydrogen atom. Heisenberg's matrix mechanics and its duality with Schrodinger's wave mechanics, quantum mechanics in the interaction picture. Dirac's relativistic theory of the electron exhibiting the spin of the electron as a relativistic effect when it interacts with an external electromagnetic field. Feynman's path integral approach to non-relativistic quantum mechanics with is a marvellous intuitive interpretation as a sum over paths and how classical mechanics is obtained from its limit as Planck' constant tends to zero, methods for computing the spectra of the Dirac Hamiltonian in a radial potential, quantum field theory as developed by Feynman, Schwinger, Tomonaga and Dyson for describing the interaction between electrons, positrons, and photons via propagators using both the operator theoretic expansions and Feynman's path integral. We also introduce time independent and time dependent perturbation theory in quantum mechanics with applications to quantum gate design for quantum computers forming a major part of the research conducted by the author's research group, Quantum noise introduced into the Schrodinger and Dirac's equation based on the Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic calculus in Boson Fock space, scattering theory and wave operators with applications to quantum gate design, some aspects of second quantization like the interpretation of Boson Fock space in terms of harmonic oscillator algebras and the BCS theory of superconductivity, Wigner-Mackey-Frobenius theory of induced representations of a group with applications to Wigner's theory of particle classification, Dirac's equation in a gravitational field and Yang-Mills non-Abelian gauge theories with application to the construction of unified quantum field theories and finally, the more recent theory of super-symmetry which is a Boson-Fermion unification theory. We have discussed the statistics of Boson's, Fermions and Maxwell-Boltzmann based on entropy maximization. The book is written in problem-solution format and it would be of use to physicists and engineers interested respectively in developing unified field theories and in the design of quantum gates. Note: T&F does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Quantized Detector Networks

George Jaroszkiewicz

Scientists have been debating the meaning of quantum mechanics for over a century. This book for graduate students and researchers gets to the root of the problem; the contextual nature of empirical truth, the laws of observation and how these impact on our understanding of quantum physics. Bridging the gap between non-relativistic quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, this novel approach to quantum mechanics extends the standard formalism to cover the observer and their apparatus. The author demystifies some of the aspects of quantum mechanics that have traditionally been regarded as extraordinary, such as wave-particle duality and quantum superposition, by emphasizing the scientific principles rather than the mathematical modelling involved. Including key experiments and worked examples throughout to encourage the reader to focus on empirically sound concepts, this book avoids metaphysical speculation and also alerts the reader to the use of computer algebra to explore quantum experiments of virtually limitless complexity.

Resources of the Quantum World

Gilad Gour

This book delves into the burgeoning field of quantum resource theories, a novel and vibrant area of research within quantum information science that seeks to unify diverse quantum phenomena under a single framework. By recognizing various attributes of physical systems as "resources," this approach offers a fresh perspective on quantum phenomena, transforming our understanding and application of concepts such as quantum entanglement, coherence, and more. With a focus on the pedagogical, the book aims to equip readers with the advanced mathematical tools and physical principles needed to navigate and contribute to this rapidly evolving field. It covers a wide range of topics, from the foundational aspects of quantum mechanics and quantum information to detailed explorations of specific resource theories, including entanglement, asymmetry, and thermodynamics. Through rigorous mathematical exposition and a unique axiomatic approach, the book provides deep insights into the operational and conceptual frameworks that underpin quantum resource theories, making it an invaluable resource for graduate students, early-career researchers, and anyone interested in the cutting-edge developments in quantum information science.
