Abstract

The interplay of quantum fluctuation through the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction and spin-orbit coupling can modify the stability of the ultradilute Bose-Bose mixtures and result in rich nonlinear physics. Here, under the action of spin-orbit coupling, LHY correction, and rotation, the ground state and vortex excitation of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with LHY correction trapped in a rotating potential are studied. Stable isotropic and anisotropic ground states with zero momentum (in the zero-momentum phase) and nonzero momentum (in the plane wave phase) are obtained. It is shown that anisotropic ground states are persistent near the phase boundary. Particularly, unpolarized and polarized vortex states are predicted. The phase transition condition, the effective mass and quadrupole surface mode describing the anisotropic (deformation) of the condensates, and the critical rotation frequency for vortex excitation are provided analytically. Owing to the action of spin-orbit coupling, the effective mass of the condensates is spatially dependent and asymmetric in two phases, resulting in distinct quadrupole modes, deformations, and vortex excitations in the two phases, especially when the LHY correction is present. The LHY correction promotes the system in the zero-momentum phase with unpolarized vortex states, while the spin-orbit coupling promotes the emergence of a plane wave phase with polarized vortex states. The phase transition and vortex excitation can be well manipulated by spin-orbit coupling, Raman coupling, LHY correction, and external potential.

Quantum phases of rotating Raman spin–orbit-coupled dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates with Lee–Huang–Yang correction

Yu Zhang, Xianghua Su, Hanlin Chen +3 more

We investigate the ground-state phases and spin textures of rotating binary dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates with Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction and Raman-induced spin–orbit coupling (SOC) in a harmonic trap. Without rotation and SOC, the enhanced LHY correction can lead to structural phase transitions of the system. In the presence of SOC, a phase diagram as a function of the Raman coupling and LHY correction strengths is given. It is shown that the system exhibits rich and exotic quantum phases including quantum droplet (QD) phase with hidden vortex-antivortex pairs, droplet-stripe coexistence phase with hidden vortex-antivortex cluster, QD phase with visible triangular vortex lattice, annular stripe phase containing Anderson-Toulouse coreless vortex, and annular phase with vortex-antivortex pair necklace. In particular, for the rotation case, with the variation of Raman coupling strength the system displays complicated ground-state structures, such as layered structure of droplet necklaces and annular stripe with hidden layered vortex necklace and antivortex necklace, toroidal stripe phase with hidden antivortex necklace, and composite phase of visible square antivortex lattice and annular stripe. Furthermore, the system sustains fascinating novel spin textures and skyrmion excitations, including triangular half-antiskyrmion lattice, alternating meron-antimeron necklace, double-layer half-skyrmion necklace, and triangular half-skyrmion lattice.

Stable quantum vortices in Lee-Huang-Yang dipolar superfluids

Subramaniyan Sabari, Ramaswamy Radha, Lauro Tomio +1 more

The nucleation and dynamics of vortices in the quasi-two-dimensional rotating dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate are explored by taking into account the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction to the mean-field (MF) theory. Assuming approximate cancellation of the MF interactions, we focus on the formation of a pure LHY superfluid. The effect of rotational frequency $Ω$ is investigated numerically by determining the corresponding number of stable vortices in the superfluid, together with the respective energy per particle $E$ and chemical potential $μ$. The LHY superfluid provides a deep minimum of $E$ and $μ$, indicating that it is a remarkably robust state of quantum matter. By fixing the LHY interaction strength, an exact single-vortex critical frequency is found, along with the respective chemical potential. A notable feature, observed when creating the LHY superfluid with fewer than five vortices, which is understood as being due to the superfluid's nonlinearity and trapping aspect ratio, is the large frequency ranges admitting the production of two and four vortices, as compared to the small frequency ranges to obtain one and three vortices.

Phase transitions and dynamics of one-dimensional solitons in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Bose mixtures

Guihua Chen, Hongcheng Wang, Boris A. Malomed +2 more

We investigate the formation, stability, and dynamics of solitons in a one-dimensional binary Bose-Einstein condensate under the action of the spin-orbit-coupling and Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction to the underlying system of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations. We identify the semi-dipole (SD) family of solitons and thoroughly analyze its properties. The numerical analysis reveals intricate bifurcations, including transitions from real to complex-valued stationary wave functions of the SD solitons and norm-dependent dynamical instabilities. Stability maps in the plane of the solitons' norm and interaction strength exhibit areas of monostability, oscillatory behavior, and soliton splitting. Solitons with complex stationary wave functions emerge as ground states in broad parameter areas due to the effects of the LHY terms. The other soliton species, in the form of mixed modes (MMs), do not feature the compexification bifurcation. In the LHY-dominated regime, the SD and MM solitons exhibit identical values of the energy for the same norm. The results deepen the understanding of nonlinear matter-wave states and reveal multistable ones in quantum gases.

Two-dimensional vortex quantum droplets in Bose-Einstein condensates

Hao Huang

Bose-Einstein condensation(BEC) has been a research hotspot in cold atom physics for the past few decades. Recently, experiments on BECs have reported the observation of liquid-like quantum droplets, attracting significant interest. The physics for forming quantum droplets can be explained by zero-point quantum fluctuation which effectively prohibit the collapse caused by the mean-field interactions between the atoms. The stabilization mechanism beyond the mean-field theory, induced by quantum fluctuations, can be described by the Lee–Huang–Yang(LHY) correction. Normally, forming stable 2D or 3D solitons in free space is a challenging problem. Additionally, an intriguing question is how to generate 2D or 3D solitons with embedded vorticity. The LHY stability mechanism offers a new approach to producing stable solitons and vortex solitons in BECs. In this thesis, two-dimensional vortex quantum droplets in Bose-Einstein condensates, including those with and without external potential, are examined. The study of solitons and vortex solitons in BECs under mean-field interactions and external potential has yielded significant results. This thesis expands this field by introducing the LHY correction to study stable quantum droplets and vortex droplets in BECs. The work chapters begin with studying binary quantum droplets in free space, considering the case where interspecies interactions are weakly attractive and intraspecies interactions are weakly repulsive. The zero-vorticity, semi-vortex, and binary vortex quantum droplets are studied in Chapter 3. Stable semi-vortex quantum droplets with embedded vorticity up to 8 are found in this system. This result gives a way to form stable vortex droplets with high topological charges in free space by controlling one component with zero vorticity and the other component with embedded vorticity. The stability and properties of these droplets are systematically studied. Chapter 4 explores the vortex quantum droplets and hidden vortex droplets confined within a radial lattice trap. It is found that the existence curves of the droplets confined within this optical trap could violate the Vakhitov-Kolokolov(VK) criterion, which is a necessary condition to form a stable soliton. A remarkable finding is that the vortex and hidden vortex quantum droplets in this radial lattice remain stable when they carry the embedded vorticity up to 11. The double-ring vortex and hidden vortex quantum droplets confined within this radial lattice are also discussed. The work expands from non-magnetic atoms to magnetic atoms in Chapter 5, which needs to consider the dipole-dipole interactions(DDIs). The anisotropic dipolar vortex quantum droplets trapped in an annular potential are studied. Under the effect of the ring shape potential, the double peak ring-shaped vortex droplets remain stable when they carry the embedded vorticity up to 11. It is the first time stable droplets with high topological charges have been formed in a dipolar system. Additionally, the shape transformation of dipolar vortex droplets induced by the strength of the mean-field interaction is examined. Finally, the behavior of dipolar vortex droplets confined within a weak-depth annular potential is also discussed. The results of this thesis may prove highly useful in creating stable vortex quantum droplets in Bose-Einstein condensates and advancing the broader field of ultracold atoms.

Zero-momentum coupling induced transitions of ground states in Rashba spin–orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensates

Jingjing Jin, Suying Zhang, Wei Han

We investigate the transitions of ground states induced by zero momentum (ZM) coupling in pseudospin-1/2 Rashba spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a harmonic trap. In a weak harmonic trap, the condensate presents a plane wave (PW) state, a stripe state or a spin polarized ZM state, and the particle distribution of the stripe state is weighted equally at two points in the momentum space without ZM coupling. The presence of ZM coupling induces an imbalanced particle distribution in the momentum space, and leads to the decrease of the amplitude of the stripe state. When its strength exceeds a critical value, the system experiences the transition from stripe phase to PW phase. The boundary of these two phases is shifted and a new phase diagram spanned by the ZM coupling and the interatomic interactions is obtained. The presence of ZM coupling can also achieve the transition from ZM phase to PW phase. In a strong harmonic trap, the condensate exhibits a vortex lattice state without ZM coupling. For the positive effective Rabi frequency of ZM coupling, the condensate is driven from a vortex lattice state to a vortex-free lattice state and finally to a PW state with the increase of coupling strength. In addition, for the negative effective Rabi frequency, the condensate is driven from a vortex lattice state to a stripe state, and finally to a PW state. The stripe state found in the strong harmonic trap is different from that in previous works because of its nonzero superfluid velocity along the stripes. We also discuss the influences of the ZM coupling on the spin textures, and indicate that the spin textures are squeezed transversely by the ZM coupling.
